Friday Question #192

By , April 27, 2012 8:13 am

Do you (did you) feed your pet table scraps? What kind of “human” foods do (did) they like to eat, if any?

Don’t worry, I think about things other than Data! It’s just that my sister made this video last weekend and I wanted to share it!

Data does not care for much human food except fish and popcorn (and not together). But the popcorn has to be just the way he likes it – perfectly oiled and salted. No dry popcorn for him! And he only likes the fluffy/poufy part of the popcorn. So we baby him and bite off that part for him to eat.

It’s funny to me that Data does not want milk or cheese or anything like that (we even tried to give him turkey once, when someone brought it to our house for Thanksgiving). Growing up, our cats went cray cray for string cheese. Data just seems to be happy eating the same thing every day, until he hears Steven get the pan out to make popcorn, then he goes cray cray!

  1. That’s AWESOME! Mosie really loves hard boiled eggs and she always goes crazy when we get out the ice cream… which is weird because we’ve never given her any!

Delilah eats very minimal human foods. We give her carrots as snacks and occasionally other veggies. When she is sick we give her boiled chicken and rice. We do not give her table scraps. Growing up, all of our family dogs ate table scraps though. I’m pretty sure it would make Delilah sick though. She’s gotten ahold of some people food in the past and had horrible digestive issues.
It’s rare that we have issues keeping food away from her, but I’ve found that if she is at a family picnic, people try to give dogs food. I find it very rude to give someone else’s animal table scraps without even asking the owner. I had to tell my step-grandma repeatedly to not feed her stuff one time! I eventually had to tie her up (Delilah, not my step-grandma).

  3. Kelly says:

Napoleon loves popcorn and stalks the bowl. He’s also a fan of bananas, pumpkin, apples, carrots and green beans. My dog apparently prefers healthier food than I do.

  4. diane says:

That’s so funny, growing up my best friend’s cat LOVED popcorn! You had to hide the bowl from him or he’d root around in it. Hee hee.
My kitties LOVE cheese (especially fancy soft cheeses like goat cheese and brie–cultured kitties!) and they enjoy turkey, salmon, and cooked chicken. I really don’t feed them people food that often. Bastet is just too fat! Sometimes I’ll sneak a special treat to Beatrice, though. 🙂

  5. abbi says:

Haha, that’s funny about the popcorn. We don’t really give our dogs any people food, it was a rule we set up at the beginning to avoid them hanging around us when we were eating and begging. But, one does have a love for bread. We had to change where we stored bread because he could get in the cabinets and get it out. I have some good stores on the loaves of bread he’s stolen and either eaten or hidden!

  6. That video was hilarious! Every time Steven eats some of the popcorn Data’s like “Hey, wait a minute! I want more you jerks!” [swat swat]… and her head follows the popcorn from bowl to mouth like a tennis match. This made me laugh! Thanks so much for sharing.

My dog, Pepper, doesn’t like pretzels or popcorn. Her favorite thing in the world is pizza (she’s knocked off pieces from the counter before, helping herself to a few slices). Now she’s had a taste of the good life. Anytime we order pizza, she begs for it worse than she’s ever begged for anything in her life. She just sits there, watching you eat, continuously licking her lips (no joke). We have to lock her out of the kitchen so she won’t eat it! But sometimes we’ll sneak her one of those little corner pieces just because she’s so cute. We can’t help ourselves! 🙂

  7. kandi says:

I forgot to mention Delilah’s love of corn and asparagus (I suppose she could be a vegetarian since she LOVES veggies). When my parents dog-sit for us, she loves finding ways into their garden. The fresh corn is her favorite. She will eat it husk, silk, cob, and all. Crazy dog.

  8. Anne says:

I hear that cats are pickier eaters when it comes to people food. That’s cute that Data is so particular about popcorn! I feel like we might be bad dog owners in that we do give our dogs table scraps after dinner each night. They’re at least trained to not beg while we’re eating, since they know they’ll get a bite once we’re done. And like Abbi, my dogs have taken so many loaves of bread! They’re usually good about not jumping up to the counter, but bread is a game changer.

  9. Kristina says:

We do NOT give our dogs scraps, and we’ve been happy about that decision. However, they do like carrots and apples! So, I’ll definitely share some carrot with them if I’m chopping one up. Same for apple! I think that carrots and apples are pretty common for dogs to like!

  10. bobbi says:

HAHA! I love this! Data is awesome 🙂

My mom’s dog used to beg for popcorn just like this. It always struck me as an odd thing for an animal to beg for – guess not!

  11. We had cats back at my parents’ house that would eat a mixture. They would do a number on mashed potatoes mixed in with their dry cat food. It was insane!

  12. shelley says:

We have two border collies, they like to eat food..a lot of food..the end 🙂

  13. Gingerfoxxx says:

So SO guilty of this. Waffles gets a part of our dinner almost every night. Her favorite is broccoli – she goes BONKERS for it!

  14. Emily says:

So cute! Growing up, our cats used to love canned tuna… as soon as they heard the can opener, they would be at our feet in seconds! They also used to love meat scraps, potato chips, and ice cream. However, they would always run away at the scent of citrus – no oranges for them!

  15. The dogs (all 3 of them, big ones too, no wimpy TTF dogs!) have iron guts so can eat anything. The old bitch ass cat, who hates me, must have been a dog in a previous life. She begs for food all the time, then proceeds to vomit it back up once someone gives in and feeds her “people” food. Therefore, we try to avoid sharing with her. In response, she resorts to trying to steal it off the counter/table, or tripping us when we are walking with food so we drop something, or she will try to bat it off of our fork with her paw. She’s has been a “lovely” addition to our home for the past 13 years…..

  16. Liz says:

Growing up my cat Sunshine went nuts for popcorn, so funny…I wonder what it is about popcorn that cats love?

  17. Melissa says:

My dogs will eat anything and act like every meal time (human or theirs is the first time they have eaten in years) Now granted, they also snack on poop so who knows what this is saying about them. (Though I did attend a lecture the other week that said poop is a natural probiotic for animals so it made me feel a little bit better!)

We try not to feed them too many scraps but I don’t feel as bad when it’s vegetables. They LOVE asparagus (the woody parts we snap off), carrots and sweet potatoes. PB and cheese, of course, as well as any type of meat. (Bali stole and ate an entire rotisserie chicken…carcass included…off the counter! And she is less than 25 pounds!)

  18. Kristie says:

My cat loves popcorn too! She’s a begger though and if we are sitting at the table and there are empty seats (as in, even with friends over) she’ll sit in one and give you the look. She probably goes craziest for mango & watermelon though – when I’m cutting them she won’t stop meowing or leave me alone. Sometimes I’ll give her the mango pit when I’m done cutting and she goes to town on it :).

  19. sizzle says:

Growing up we fed our pets table scraps, particularly our dog Happy who we called the “garbage disposal”. I try not to feed my pets that way though my dog Angelou loved that last bite of toast in the morning and my cats like fish or cheese.

I once had a cat who loved french fries and donuts!

  20. We generally do not feed our dog table scraps. But, now that Gavin is at that age where he likes throwing his food off his high chair tray … well, she eats more human food than before. There was a time when she gained too much weight, so the vet suggested we give her vegetables instead of dog treats. She fell in love with carrots – so, now whenever I’m making a salad, she sits next to me, patiently waiting for a payout.

  21. Rainy is loves with string cheese. I also once caught her sticking her paw in an empty glass of milk (there was a few drops in the bottle of the glass). She was also bugging me for steamed broccoli once. I gave it to her and she ate it. Link on the other hand…. he usually only prefers his cat food. Sometimes he doesn’t even want his cat treats.

Oh and I love that video! Data is such a cutie!

  22. You may have the best cat ever – that is adorable.
I totally feed Lexie table scraps. I usually give her the blandest bits – like a taste of a crust, or a piece of plain potato. She does get small pieces of cheese though. Small. My parents on the other hand will give her just about anything in large quantities. I don’t appreciate it, but Lexie sure does.

  23. martymankins says:

The cat will get small bits of meat that we have, but for the most part, he’s all cat food. The new cat Triscuit doesn’t get any table scraps. She’s too fat as it is now. lol

  24. Melie says:

Oh! I miss having a cat around so much it hurts! The only human food my cat used to like was yogurt. It was the hardest thing to eat yogurt with the cat around. And I always let some at the end for her and she would be so pissed if I didn’t. Plus, she has the strongest opinions about cat food too. Now, that I am thinking about it, she is almost as picky about food as I am! 🙂

  25. Erin says:

I liked sharing new foods with the dogs to see what they would and wouldn’t eat. They were all pretty typical in their likes and dislikes. Except for Trinka Deu eating sticks of butter if she could get them. Blech!

  26. cindy says:

I have one fussy doxie and one that will eat anything. They love carrots and watermelon, also a nice sandwhich if they can grab it off your plate.

  27. Courtney says:

OMG!!! I heart Data!! He is so stinking cute! Watching him watch Steven and the popcorn cracks me up, that is way too funny!!! I think y’all are fantastic parents to Data- biting the part off the popcorn he doesn’t like!!

Mazzy will eat yogurt, ice cream, parts of my sandwiches; she is not scared of people food and will pretty much try anything as long as it smells good (to her I guess)!

Murphy on the other hand is terrified of people food, I guess he thinks it’s going to attack him or something, but that’s ok, as fat as he is it’s probably for the best!

The one issue we do have, tuna in the can- they both LOVE it. We can’t even open a can now without the kittehs running into the kitchen and sitting there staring up at us. So now when we open a can we have to show them it’s not tuna, we promise, otherwise we would share.

Ah, nothing like being a spoiled rotten kitteh!!
    =^..^=

  28. maggie says:

I have tried to feed my cat bites off my plate, like chicken or seafood that isn’t spiced or sauced but she has zero interest. Never tried popcorn though!
