Don’t compare yourself to the elites

Are you guys reading The Road to London (with Kara Goucher)? It’s the cutest thing ever – updates on Kara’s London Olympics 2012 training written from the perspective of her son, Colt (really written by her husband, Adam). I love getting that inside perspective on an elite runner and especially seeing all the photos.

I was catching up this week and I saw that for April 21st, Colt (Adam) wrote:

Saturday Kara embarked on the longest run of her entire life; 3 hours!

It did not say how far she ran in those three hours*, but damn. I have “run” for well over 5 hours (Chicago Marathon 2010) at probably 2.5 times the pace Kara runs. It is really interesting to think that her longest run (in time) in something I have run past a few times… but only because I am so damn slow. Interesting perspective. It’s amazing how fast these women are!

What is your longest timed (not distance) run?

I love the pictures of her and Shalane. They’re both so freaking cute. I am really excited to see how they do in the Olympics this summer!

Source. Check out Shalane’s abs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*and to note the log says she has run 3 hours since then, just thought this “first time” note was interesting

I was worried about revealing your identity and that you are training! But now that it’s out there, “Go Maggie Go!” 🙂

Oh yeah. I’ve run more than twice that, haha! Chicago 2010 – 6:09. Gross though – and NOT all running…

  3. Michel says:

    snort. ha. try 8:29. lol.

    those abs are insane. damn.

Wow! It’s all about perspective, isn’t it?

Those abs just kept me from going to get a snack 🙂 I have thought a lot about that. During my marathon training, I am out there for over 3 hours in quite a few of my long runs. Mentally, I think that is even harder than running faster for a shorter period. My longest run was the Antarctica Marathon, which took me 5:15. I didn’t have my watch, nor were there clock on the course, so I just put my head down and ran. But, this actually made it feel faster than races where I kept checking my time.

RnR Las Vegas 2010. 5:27:08. But that was hardly all running. I walked the entire last 4.2 miles (except for the finisher’s chute) and a lot of miles 18-22. That’s what one gets when one runs injured!

I thought the same thing when I read about Kara running 3 hours for the first time. I’ve done that a couple times as well 🙂 Chicago was 6:21 for me…but that was also a lot of walking. Shalane’s abs are insane!

  8. Kandi says:

That is kinda amusing to think she’d never run for 3 hours before. Crazy, really. My longest time run was my marathon at 4:26.

  9. Erin says:

Wow. I never really thought about how long the elites run in time. 3 hours is new to her? Dang. They should try running for over 5!

  10. J says:

I think my longest run is about 3hrs and 5 minutes. So the marathon will be the longest I have ever run on my feet.

  11. Maggie and I talked about this photo since we sometimes compare ourselves as the slower versions of Kara and Shalane. As Maggie said, this photo is like looking in a mirror… AmIright?
