Lessons learned:

  • Don’t eat vegan golden grahams (cereal) right before a run!
  • I used Maggie‘s trick on Friday to run with ice in my bra. It helped me stay cool… until it melted. I ran my the house so I could put more in.
  • I wore my new Mizunos on Wednesday. At first I felt like there was not enough cushioning, but I think that is because I am used to Asics. I am anxious to try them again!

Notes:

  • I am running so damn slow in this heat. I stop to rest in the shade if I need to. I stop to get water a lot. And my pace… is just slooow. Especially on Sunday, after a heavy workout day Saturday. I would really like to do that 50K, and know I can… I am just not sure about doing it and meeting the time cut-offs! I’ll see how the next few weeks go before deciding about registering. And I do have to keep in mind that I run faster when it’s not so stinking hot. Don’t let the slow running in the heat mess with your head! It’s the heat (not you)! Running slow in the high heat says nothing about you as a runner, except that you are smart.
  • No strength this week. My trainer took Wed-Fri off and I knew I would be too lazy to do it on my own. That’s the sad truth! But we have a session set up for tomorrow.

    whoa mama, you’re a machine!

  2. bobbi says:

You are outstanding – that’s a helluva lotta miles in one weekend! I had such a great time saturday – so fun to run with you again!

  3. Kelly says:

My run on Saturday was so incredibly slow, but it was also so hot that my clothes weighed more than me by the end of it.

  4. Erin says:

Very, very good points about the heat. Last Monday I told my running group not to be afraid to stop and walk if they needed to. Don’t know if anyone else listened to me, but I certainly listened to me!

People just beat themselves up when their performance drops in the heat! And they shouldn’t! It’s okay to walk and take a break. I mean… don’t train like that ALL summer, but when it’s really bad out 🙂

  5. maggie says:

Yeah that’s the problem with ice… It melts.

  6. kandi says:

Very smart to run slower in the heat. Running in the heat regardless of pace will help you in the long run when it cools the eff down.
I feel like everyone and their brother has been chosen for the Mizuno shoes except me. 🙁

  7. Emily says:

Thanks for the reassurance regarding the slow running in the heat. These horrible weather conditions have TOTALLY messed with my head and depleted my confidence! I am really looking forward to whenever autumn-like temperatures finally do hit later this year because I think we will all get a nice running boost when it happens!

  8. The Linz says:

Hey– at least you are out there running in the heat. I use the heat as a major excuse. But to be honest I’m still not used to this darn humidity. I’ve never had to deal with it for the past 28 years, so trying to run in it now is really really messing with me. I like the idea of putting ice in your bra, will have to try that!!
