Where do you look online to find races?

A blogger expat emailed me yesterday because she is moving back to the states and wondered where I look online for races in Chicago. I had some recommendations, but wonder if you guys use anything different! And what about non-running events – where do you look for other sports?

My #1 recommendation is always runningintheusa.com. Click on the races tab and simply search by state and month. And I just noticed you can search for clubs there too! I always look there when I am traveling – that is how I found out about the trail race I recently did in Kansas City, MO, and about the 5K I am running this Saturday with Gina and Bobbi.

The #2 place I look is cararuns.org – the Chicago Area Runners Association site. I don’t find this list to be as extensive as runningintheusa.com, but I still check it out.

Is there a website specific for your city that you look at to check out upcoming races?

In other running news, Muddy Monk is having a Black Friday sale for the Thriller in Schiller trail race, which will be October 27, 2013. If you register this Friday, it’s only $14, AND they’re having a free Chicago Style hot dog bar after the race (including options for gluten free buns and vegan dogs) and one free beer to everyone of age. All participants will receive a bib, race t-shirt, a customized 2013 Thriller in Schiller pint glass and there will be a costume contest like this year! Who’s in for next year?

Ha ha. If I would have posted a Wordless Wednesday today, this would have been it:

ohhh I might be in for the race next year!

I usually do chicago athlete for races but if these are better I’ll be open to those…

Somehow I managed to sign up with Active.com and now get a monthly email of races that are in my general area. It’s cool because some of them are ones that were not on my radar (especially since I am new the area). P.S Being an Idaho Spud myself I had to LOL at your photo!! 🙂

I think I might get those too! And they also send me other things I might be interested in that aren’t running? Or maybe I am thinking of a different site 🙂

I am a CARA member so I get updates regulary on races but I have to admit that their race choices arent as limited. Usually I hear about races through blogs, Active.com, and I have heard of running in the usa. haha that is so funny! Happy Early thanksgiving

  4. I discovered Running in the USA last year when I was looking for my redemption marathon. Now, I use the site regularly!! I agree, it really is the best resource outside of the Chicago area! 🙂

  5. Xaarlin says:

I like http://www.mychicagoathelete.com for Chicagolandia races

I also like halfmarathons.net and marathonguide.com to break down the races by state and date.

  6. Kelly says:

good tip on the Running in the USA site – just found a trail 10k in Crystal Lake in January – hooray! CARA’s calendar is a little cumbersome.

  7. Emily says:

I second Xaarlin’s suggestion on halfmarathons.net. I sometimes use Runner’s World’s site, too (http://www.runnersworld.com/race-finder) but find that it’s not always a very complete list.

That is so awesome that Muddy Monk is hosting a Black Friday race registration! I wish more race organizers would offer Black Friday deals!!!

  8. Pete B says:

The Wordless Wednesday pic is hilarious. Love those Dunkin’ Donuts hash browns!

  9. Anne says:

Wait, wait, there’s a run that has a HOT DOG BAR at the end of it? Chicago-style isn’t even my favorite way to eat one, but wow that sounds awesome! I might have to sign up for that.

Of course I had no idea there were online calendars for these things. Mostly I get my running info from the Fleet Feet event calendar – they’re right by me and I got my shoes there, and they sponsor a few of the runs I’ve already done, so that’s why. But I could probably stand to branch out a little, so I’m bookmarking the sites you mentioned.

Doesn’t that sound awesome? Ha ha ha. But don’t tell anyone Chicago style is not your fave… your secret is safe with me (P.S. I just like KETCHUP on mine :)).

  10. I get Active.com e-mails and usually look at those for races. I somehow managed to sign up in both Michigan where my parents live as well as Chicago so I get e-mails about most races in the midwest. I’m going to bookmark the sites you mentioned though too, thanks!

I love the Mr. Potatohead picture!

  11. Maggie says:

I also use Chicago Athlete and Active.com

  12. Erin says:

I shared Running in the USA with my running club and they seemed to really like it! I don’t really search for races; I usually find out about them from friends (like you). But, it’s good to know that those sites are out there!

  13. Kandi says:

I usually just go to local club websites to find races. Sometimes I see them in the active.com emails I get though.
