Who needs a social media citation?

By , December 3, 2012 12:31 pm

Heh heh heh.

Which of these citations are you guilty of? And which are your biggest social media pet peeves?

Gina gave me these citations. To issue? I hope?! Ha ha ha. I am definitely guilty of a few:

  • Constant profile-photo swapping – I do it all the time on Facebook, and am constantly changing my masthead here.
  • “Liking” stupid things – I may be a bit of an over “liker” on Facebook.
  • Lurking – Sometimes!
  • Acroynm abuse – when it comes to running jargon, and Kim-speak, yes.
  • Oversharing – Hey! That’s what I am all about!

And for my write-ins (that I am guilty of):

  • Posting just to post (similar to overposting) – feeling compelled to post something… hey, where do you think today’s post’s inspiration came from anyway?!
  • Posting too quickly – I like to write my race reports and get them up right away. A few people I know wait for the official photos. I am too anxious for that.
  • Social media purist (snob?) – I stick to my blog and Facebook. I am still not on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest*… Tumblr… what else is there? It sounds fun, but I have a hard time keeping up with blogs and Facebook! I think I am missing out on a lot, but oh wells.
  • Made up words – I have a few words that I use that are not real words, like schweet, snister, Fanksgiving, momo… that is surely not annoying at all…

*Well, I have an account but do not use it. Oops.

Oooooo, so I kind of think I’d like to turn the question around. Which ones do YOU think I’M guilty of. Go ahead! I can take it. 😉

  2. Marcia says:

I would never do any of the things listed on the citation. That in itself must be a huge violation! Haha!

  3. Cary says:

I am so guilty of pretty much all the ones you mentioned. 🙁

  4. Anne says:

Hahaha, this is awesome! Though now I’ll think twice when you like something of mine 🙁

My biggest pet peeves are status updates that involve: trivial parts of your day that no one would ever share in real life/the weather/politics/anything related to potty-training. I have more, but I’ll just sound mean and crabby if I continue that list.

I think I mostly try to limit my presence on Facebook to posting pictures and talking about food, running and my dogs (this is not unlike my blog I guess). I use and LOVE Instagram, because it’s a great outlet for all the pictures that I don’t feel like posting on Facebook. And I used Pinterest to gather wedding planning ideas – all my bridesmaids and another girlfriend all contributed to a board on that. We also use it to plan joint parties and vacations, and I love it for recipes. But I might be online too much 🙂

LOL, Anne, I looked at every wedding pic you posted yesterday and tried NOT to be annoying by “liking” them all. Don’t worry, my liking is sincere. I just get a bit like-happy… and I worry I annoy people!

OH GOSH. Yes. Those kind of updates. And do tell me the crabby stuff tonight.

And I am curious to hear more about photos on FB vs Instagram, because Gina said that to me too – she likes Instagram for photos she doesn’t want on Facebook, but I didn’t have time to discuss the parameters with her for what went where 😉

  5. Christina says:

I don’t think profile pic swapping is a violation!! I have little post-its that say “WTF” at the top, and I love using them when writing notes to my co-workers.. 😀

  6. Kandi says:

My biggest pet peeve on FB is when people post vague updates about personal issues they are having but never go into detail. Don’t post at all if you aren’t willing to tell people what’s going on!
I’m currently weening myself off FB though. I will still check it periodically but don’t check it everyday anymore. It started when the app on my phone stopped loading the page too often so I just stopped checking it altogether. I think it’s for the best. I would get rid of it completely but the I enjoy updates from the Basset group where I got Nova and hearing about what’s going on with my old running club.

  7. Hahaha I love the one that says sending unwanted virtual gifts. I’ve never understood what those are!

I am definitely guilty of lurking on occasion and liking too many statuses, no shame!

  8. diane says:

Hee hee hee. I think I am an over-liker too. And an over-sharer. And guilty of self-congratulatory posts. 😉
I don’t notice you changing your profile picture that much. I have a friend who does it nearly every other day, it seems. And a lot of hers are NSFW. Drives me bananas, I am on the cusp of blocking her.
There’s another one–posting NSFW photos without a warning!

  9. My biggest one is lurking – there are SO many social media sites it’s hard to read and comment on all of it.

Thanks for joining the December 5K a Day Challenge. I’ve added you to the tracking spreadsheet which can be found here:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ag6VNn51843KdG1CTzZJV3JEQkVnR2d6c2FoQW9GWWc&hl=en#gid=0

The rules for the challenge are on my blog.

I am guilty of many. And as a parent, sometimes I am an over-sharer (but NOTHING makes me happier than to see a NEW (previously critical) parent go all out on gross status updates, haha!) I am also an overactive liker. And probably too many workout posts (which has to be annoying to my non-working-out frineds).

And like you, I can’t get with the tweets and tumbls and etc. I have an instagram account to lurk on my daughter’s. Oops – there’s a lurking violation too! 🙂

  12. ChezJulie says:

These are great. I definitely have the narcissistic profile photo (Is there any other kind?) and have been known to overpost and overcomment.

  13. David C. says:

I hate these things. Who decided they are in a position to “grade” my postings? Just like the radio – if you don’t like it – change the channel. Why be mean and issue a citation? It’s stuff like this that twice have almost forced me to leave facebook. Should we issue a citation for those who lurk in the shadows and never give a word of encouragement? Maybe, just for fun we should totally block anyone who hasn’t posted in 36 hours… J/k.

  14. I am an over sharer but I’m totally cool with that. Also, a self congratulator. Cool with that too!

  15. Maggie says:

Haha at the weather reports, especially today! I get so annoyed by all the pointless posts. Especially now that Facebook filters out so many posts from my newsfeed, I get annoyed when the pointless, useless crap posts somehow show up to me. Where is the “photos of cats and my niece” filter when I need it?

    • kilax says:

LOL, you need a cat filter!

I was thinking also that I am annoyed when everyone is posting the exact same thing. But it’s bound to happen sometimes!

  16. gina says:

All in good fun! You don’t really do anything that warrents a citation. I don’t mind frequent profile or masthead changes, I like those! I probably should get one for rarely changing my pictures! And updating my blog. I’m a social media failure. Sob.

  17. Erin says:

I’m probably guilty of banal status updates 🙂 So I try to keep that stuff to Twitter now 🙂

  18. martymankins says:

Given the name of my blog, I guess I would be guilty of that first status update. 😉
