The lingering holiday

We had time this weekend to take down our Christmas tree.

All the decorations have been put away since the first weekend of January, so the tree was just standing there, naked and sad. Ha ha.

It feels good to have all that space back in the house now*! And it felt really good to take the tree to be recycled at a local forest preserve, where it will be chipped and used for trails and landscaping. It’s dorky, but I find that it’s being repurposed really exciting!

But despite our tree being gone, there are still Christmas presents in our house! We’ve yet to celebrate the holiday with my family, and I have a few gifts for friends still. I really need to give those gifts… I found this product I love and would like to do a giveaway of it on my blog while it’s still useful. Ha ha ha.

Is the holiday lingering on for anyone else?

I actually enjoy the linger. And I especially love a reason to go visit my family!

*And to have the house so tidy, since taking the tree down required A LOT of needle vacuuming. I might still have needles in my hair.

We took our tree out at the beginning of the month and out it at the end of the driveway for the recycling guy to pick up. Except we had a snow storm before he came and the tree got plowed into a snow bank. We can see the very tip of it. So, I guess our tree will be around until spring when all the snow melts.

We still have our wreath up that I decorated with ornaments 🙂 I don’t know when I will take it down.

  3. We just took down the tree, and it makes me sad. I love how homey the place feels with all of the decor. We still have a few gifts for my family, and we’re going down this weekend. And then it’s all gone. Boo! I should just start decorating for all the holidays.

Aww, have a fun time with your family! I am not sure I see you as the Valentine’s Day decoration type. Maybe President’s Day? 😉

      • But I love love … blech. Definitely not a Valentine’s girl. It’s on a Friday this year, which means I won’t be able to go out to dinner without wanting to vomit. I’m going to decorate for Groundhog Day.

        • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! I bet RR wouldn’t make you feel that way. Just go there 🙂

Woo hoo! I like that idea. Better get going! It’s less than 3 weeks away! 🙂

That’s cool that your tree will live on at the forest preserve! Our nextdoor neighbors stashed their tree in the space of our building where the bathrooms/stairwells wrap around for a LONG time a couple years ago – finally got rid of it when they discovered a bunch of critters living in it. Some people would probably be annoyed by this, but we just thought it was funny.

Lingering holiday is why I didn’t really bother with a tree or much decoration this year – once New Year’s comes and goes, I’m ready for the holidays to be over (but I suck about taking our tree down in any kind of timely fashion).

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha – they put a real tree there? That is too funny.

Decorations are so much work to put up then a super annoyance to take down. I don’t mind not having a real tree every other year when we don’t host 🙂

That is great that the forest preserve will re-use the trees! Great idea. I think I say this every year, but I do miss being able to save ours until summer and then burn it in our fire pit. So much fun.

  6. J says:

I took down the ornaments this weekend but the lights are still up with the tree. We are way behind this year.

We finally took down our tree this past Thursday after dealing with a flooded basement. That really put some pep in our step as far as putting things away! I just wish we weren’t still dealing with the flooded basement/burst pipe incident. It sounds like someone should be out to fix the wall and clean up the mess tomorrow or Wednesday though! Apparently burst pipes and water damage was a widespread problem in this area after the polar vortex last week. :/

I remember that year we didn’t take our tree down until end of February. Pure laziness. Sheesh! But it wasn’t as bad as the neighbors down the street who didn’t take down their holiday lights until mid-summer. Yep, they plugged them in every night until July.

    • kilax says:

Thanks for stopping by my blog. LOL, February is not too bad, especially when you tell that story 😉 I am wondering how long some of our neighbors will live the decorations up! 🙂

The repurposing aspect of the tree excites me as well! Our next door neighbor will have their tree sitting there in the window until at least St. Patty’s Day. It’s so odd.

    • kilax says:

I find that odd, too. As soon as we took the lights off (Jan 1) I stopped leaving the window shades open at night to “display” mine 😉

  10. You sure you didn’t just drop that tree off on the side of the road? Your photo sure does look sketchy! ha. Kidding. We dropped off our tree at a designated Chicago Park District location, where they will turn the trees into mulch and residents can pick some up for free! Like you, we’re very much into repurposing our tree!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha. Nah, my neighborhood would never be that organized to put all the trees together. It was interesting. I just followed what the website said to do to leave them in the second parking lot. I was happy there was other trees there too so I didn’t look like a weirdo ditching their tree.

I am happy that there was a program like this you could participate in too. Did Gavin like saying goodbye to the tree?

  11. I just took the ornaments down off of our tree last night because the cleaning people were coming today. The tree has slowly been dying for a little while now and I would hear ornaments falling off the drooping branches. Oops! I like the idea of recycling trees as well! Very rewarding!

  12. Maggie says:

Unlike your tree, I am never sad when I’m naked =P

  13. I love that the tree will be recycled! I didn’t know that was a thing… then again, I don’t ever have a Christmas tree, so I’m not up on those things.

    • kilax says:

I’ve been following the LCFPD’s social media for a few years and this is the first time I’ve noticed them saying something about it! I was happy to see other trees there too 🙂

  14. kapgar says:

Our final Christmas party is this Saturday. Rescheduled due to bronchitis and a torn meniscus.

  15. Losing Lindy says:

I actually found a present for you post holiday, but feel you need it. I just need to figure out how to present it to you. 😉

  16. Amy says:

We planted our tree in the back yard. We don’t do this every year, but we now have three past Christmas trees planted – this year, 2003 and 1994 – which is huge now, by the way…

    • kilax says:

My friend was suggesting I do that! That is so cool that it’s possible! (We can’t where we live – since we don’t really own our yard) I think it’s such a neat thing to do 🙂

  17. Kristina says:

Great way to use the tree!
I just had my last “holiday party” at work, so the holidays are officially over. Yay!

  18. Mica says:

Ooh, I like the idea of recycling Christmas trees! I’ve seen so many just out on the sidewalks here in SF, which seems like a waste.

One of the reasons why I never decorate for Christmas is that I don’t want to store the ornaments the other, uh, 11 months of the year. Do you have dedicated space to store everything once you take it down?

    • kilax says:

Oh gah, we are lucky we put some shelves up in the garage for all that holiday crap. Yeah, otherwise, there is no room in my house. We have 8-10 crates of holiday stuff (including other holidays, too).

  19. That’s a HUGE tree!
