Friday Question 245

By , January 17, 2014 7:28 am

Do you have a junk drawer in your house/garage/at work/wherever?

Gina and I were talking about junk drawers the other day, and I said to her, “do people actually have those?!”

Then, “Wait! I think I we have one! An electronics junk drawer!”

Ha ha ha.

But let’s call it what it really is, folks. A museum.

Um, a somewhat unorganized museum.

But what fun it was to look through there! Look at all the different types of music devices I found! I should have taken a photo of all the different headphones, too.

So, we apparently do have a drawer to throw random electronics in. But everything else is mostly organized in the house. We tidied up after we put away all the holiday decorations, and I really love keeping the house that way. I hope I can keep it up!

I am counting in my head and I hve….wait for it….5.

    5 drawers of junk.

    sigh.

  2. Anne says:

Whoa, those are some fancy Discmans 🙂

I feel like our apartment is nothing but junk drawers/bins. We have them hiding all over the place!

  3. Rachel says:

haha I love all the old electronics! I had the same MP3 player as that green one. I think it held 20 whole songs at most! 🙂

On that same note, we found a Walkman in a drawer at my parents’ house over CHristmas. It still had batteries and a tape in it, and it worked! I was dancing to Whitney Houston all over that house. 🙂

We do have 2 junk drawers, but I’ve been doing pretty good at keeping them organized lately. One is better than the other.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! Better be choosy with those 20 songs! 😉

Woo hoo for that Walkman! It had the anti-skip, right? Remember when they didn’t have that?!

  4. chezjulie says:

Do you mean our electric cords, flashlight, cutting boards, instruction manuals, birthday party plates, candles drawer?

  5. Kandi says:

We have two small drawers in our kitchen that really need to be cleaned out and have a purpose. Someday. At work, I think most of my drawers are full of junk. Oops! Nobody would offer me an organization award, that’s for sure!

    • kilax says:

I am way worse at work. They just give me so much junk. My team has become more and more electronic (rather than paper based) and I am happy for it!

  6. Heather says:

Absolutely! Every house needs a junk drawer. lol

  7. We have one. I think. Sort of. It has Nuun, gels, Clif bars, power cords, screws, nails, screwdrivers, a flashlight, lip balm, pencils … gorilla glue … plastic knives and random manuals. By the way, that’s ALL from memory. I do give myself props that my running nutrition is organized.

My grandma always had a junk drawer in the house growing up. It was rad. Now, I think she has a junk closet in the smaller house. Not as fun. Stuff hits you in the head.

  8. Totally have multiple junk drawers, one in the kitchen and then one in my nightstand that’s a catch-all for my jewelry, tights, etc. I tend to collect a lot of clutter and shoving it in a drawer is an easy way to keep it out of sight (especially Ian’s sight…) :).

  9. Xaarlin says:

We have 2-4 drawers and I have at least 3 boxes of electronics that I have retired. I’m sure L has even more boxes of electronics that have been put out to pasture. What’s a discman? Lol

  10. Erin says:

Please tell me you didn’t put those cd players back in the drawer after you pulled them out…why are you keeping them??

Jason is a junk drawer fanatic. He has a stack of those plastic drawer units in our office closet FILLED with crap. I don’t even know what’s in most of them. They are not organized at all which gives me figurative hives.

I think the only “junk” drawer I have is in my nightstand. That reminds me. I should clean it out.

We used to have one in the kitchen but we needed the space to put actual kitchen stuff so we cleaned it out and now it’s full of tea. The pens that were in it are in a cup and the rubber bands live in another drawer. Everything else we threw away.

    • kilax says:

I did put them back in there. We were going out of town and I didn’t think it was a good time to ask Steven to sort through the drawer with me. We are probably keeping them because they work and we haven’t taken the time to go through the drawer yet. Eventually they will be recycled or go to Goodwill.

Do you think Jason will ever go through his stuff?

      • Erin says:

Okay, as long as you eventually get rid of them 🙂

Jason always claims he’s going to go through that stuff when we move but it never happens. Those drawer units just keep getting moved from place to place and never get cleaned out. I guess, though, if you need a random cord or piece of electronics we probably have one in there somewhere!

  11. Um, I not only have 2 of those little yellow radios, but I still use them.

We have a junk drawer in our kitchen, and it mainly holds cell phone chargers, pens, and pizza menus. The important things.

  12. Maggie says:

Our entire spare room is kind of our junk drawer. Our apartment has tiny closets, and that room is too small even to use as an office (our L-shaped desk wouldn’t fit in there) so we use it as storage, but I’m pretty sure there are at least two boxes in there that just haven’t been unpacked since we moved.

  13. jan says:

I have a few junk drawers of various types. LOL Over Christmas break I opened a dresser in the basement and found a drawer of old VHS tapes. The kind where you tape your own shows. It was all cycling races Chris had taped off the T.V. when he was a teenager and in college. So funny!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! I remember when I used to tape things off of TV! And my friends would even tape songs off of the radio. Aww, good times 🙂

  14. kapgar says:

We have lots of junk drawers. But we do have one that is specifically a “tech drawer” and I haven’t gone into it in a while. That could be a good blog post. Thanks for the idea!

  15. Marcia says:

We have at least 3 junk drawers. Within the last 24 hours I’ve layed eyes on 3 iPod Shuffles: blue, green and orange. I use none of them. Ugh.
Cool Discman! I had a bright yellow one back in the day.

  16. Kayla says:

I have a couple junk drawers and i think I have a plastic tote that is full of junk that I need to sort through.

I am loving that discman! 🙂

  17. Pam says:

omg yes! And it drives me nuts! I hate that we have it, but I honestly don’t know where else to put everything that’s in there. Ink pens, markers, post-its, scissors, spare batteries, extra keys… where does everyone who doesn’t have a junk drawer keep these things?!

    • kilax says:

I was talking to Steven more about this on the way home, and he says that our silverware drawer is a junk drawer because it also has tape, matches, a multi-tool and menus in it. Ha ha ha. I was thinking more a drawer of absolute useless crap! Sounds like we need something just to make that stuff more organized?!

  18. Bean says:

Do you remember trying to run with a discman?!?! Trying to be all smooth runner so it wouldn’t skip. Was that just me? Since I had the cheap version that you had to hold just right…I just realized how much I love my ipod.

    • kilax says:

When I was running I had that slim one that looks like a cylinder! Luckily I never tried the Discman! And when I did run with music (that kind of stopped in Dec 2012) I used my iPhone. We sure are spoiled!

  19. martymankins says:

A tech junk drawer. I have one of those, too. Although it’s more of an older backpack with older electronics I’ve had over the years. Which includes a Discman (and a portable DAT player)
