Pre-order

Have you ever liked the sound of an artist or band so much that you pre-ordered their album without hearing it all?

In the beginning of September I was perusing the top downloaded alternative songs list on iTunes and ran in to the band Milky Chance. One of their songs (“Down By the River”) sounded so familiar, like I’d hear it in a commercial or a movie, but I couldn’t pinpoint where.  I listened to the few other songs they had available off of their album Sadnecessary, and found myself downloading all of them! So I went ahead and pre-ordered the entire album – the first time I’d ever done that!

In fact, it’s hard to recall any entire album I’ve downloaded over the past few years. I think the only other, since I went digital, was Lady Gaga’s most recent.

So I have been pleasantly looking forward to the Milky Chance songs as they become released. I was really excited to hear one being played on an alternative radio station in the beginning of October and, gasp!!! – last Thursday, one of the Chicago pop stations (which tend to play the same 10 songs over and over) actually played one of their songs! I was shocked!

When we heard the song play I told Steven that I like their music so much I’d love to see them perform if I ever had the chance (hint hint, ha ha). I haven’t been to a (non-symphony) concert since I saw Van Halen with my parents! (Hmm, was that fall ’05, Dad?)

I follow the band on Facebook and saw they are touring the states next year! So I bought two tickets for me and Steven. It’s a long way off but I’m really looking forward to it and hoping we can make it in to a fun little date night or getaway for us!

Fun!!! I’ve never heard of them, so I’ll have to check them out! It’s been several years since I’ve been to a concert too. I don’t guess I’ve been to one since my sister moved out of Knoxville …. four years ago? When she lived there, I drove up several times to go to concerts with her. There was this venue that we LOVED. They always brought big names, but it was a small venue, like maybe 1000 people, so it had more of a festival feel to it. 🙂

    I love your Dad 🙂

I have never preordered an album, but Jenna did for the latest Foo Fighters (it comes out 11/10). I am an old lady (gasp) and I still like to HAVE THE THING IN MY HAND. This whole digital music thing confuses me.

I am glad you are going to see them! Their music has such a cool vibe – I really enjoy them.

LOL. Wait… so… what do you do with this CD? Burn it on to your computer then put the music on your phone to play in your car? I kid, I kid… 😛

Yes! Cool is the right word! Very chill! I am excited to see them! And I just saw you got the Foo Fighters tix! Excited you guys get to go! 🙂

I have heard one of their songs too, and really like it! I heard “The Stolen Dance” on the radio and shazam’ed it…GREAT tune. Let me know how the album is!

I pre-ordered Aloe Blacc’s most recent album because I heard his hit song “I’m the Man” on the radio and absolutely loved it. Very uplifting and soulful… would probably be good on a workout mix for guys. Turns out it was by far by favorite song on the album. Oh, well.

  6. I’ll have to give Milky Chance a listen! I am one of those people who likes to read others’ reviews before I buy stuff, so I rarely preorder anything. The only recent exception I can think of was the iPhone 6. And that was only because I didn’t want to go camp out in front of the AT&T store with all the teenyboppers, LOL.

I get really excited when I “find” a new band to like (instead of just passively accepting whatever is on the radio). That’s even better that you can see them in concert! I’m going to make a note to listen to them at work.

  8. Ha, I still buy physical copies of CDs if I want the entire album 😛 I’m pretty sure I’m the only person that does this. How exciting that you’re going to see them in concert! Seeing bands/musicians live has become kind of my “thing” over the past couple of years (my PT always assumes I’m going to a concert every weekend because I tend to go to shows pretty often 😛 ), and they’re a lot of fun! Especially at a smaller venue — those are my favorite.

I’ve never heard of Milky Chance so I will look them up on Spotify – which is what I’ve been using lately to listen to everything – I love it!

Ahh Milky Chance! I randomly discovered one of their songs, Stolen Dance, and listened to it obsessively. Good to know that their album is worth listening to in full!

I still haven’t picked up the rest of this album but am happy to hear it’s good. As for aong ways off concert, can’t be as bad as the Foo Fighters tickets I bought last week for a concert NEXT AUGUST!

I have pre-ordered a few albums on iTunes. I listen to Songza a lot, usually their “Cool New Music” of the current season station, and find a lot of new music that way. Often when I pull up a song I like in iTunes, the full album hasn’t been released yet, so I’ll pre-order because I know I’ll forget about it otherwise.

They play Milky Chance a lot on Alt Nation on Sirius XM satellite radio. They do have a catchy sound. And I noticed they are touring and making a SLC stop next April.

As for pre-ordering, I’ve done both iTunes and Amazon. Both are similar in that they charge you for any songs that are available right away then charge the remaining balance once the album is released. I’m not that big on pre-orders since it’s digital and if it’s an album I’m really looking forward to, I’m going to purchase it anyway. Plus, unlike a physical CD, there’s an unlimited number of digital copies available. I’m normally big on pre-orders for remastered versions of albums that might sell out (like the upcoming Tears For Fears box set).
