No shades

By , June 20, 2016 6:25 am

We bought sleep masks for our Alaska trip since the sun will be up for so long and we don’t know if the places we’re staying will have (blackout) shades.

Ha, the company name makes me laugh.

What kind of place doesn’t have shades?! Ha, secluded places in the wilderness. Places like our house…

We don’t plan on getting shades/window treatments for our home since there is no one around to “see in” and since the views are so nice. There are only two reasons* I can think of for shades – to block the western sun from hitting the television in our living space, and to keep the early rising sun from disrupting our sleep too much in the bedroom.

But I can just wear the sleep mask to help with the second issue!

Ugh, but that doesn’t stop Data from bugging me as soon as the sun’s up. He needs a little cat sized sleep mask!

*Unless our stuff starts to get hella faded… then we may have to get some! And we have temporary shades we can put up in the guest bedroom for guests who prefer shades.

I have that exact same sleep mask, and I love it. It’s a life changer. 🙂

I wish I would have gone with blackout blinds in my bedroom – my parents have them in their guest room, and I sleep like a rock whenever I’m there. Not sure I could handle a mask, but I bet that will come in handy in AK.

If you ever figure out how to make a cat stay asleep until a normal waking hour, you will be my hero…

It’s not too late to get them, is it? We had some at our old house that we bought at Tarjayjay and HOLY COW was it ever dark in our bedroom! Felt kind of weird and isolating. But great when I needed to sleep during the day!

HA! I will keep you posted 🙂

Our windows are huge and I had to custom order the shades (Duettes, actually) – so yeah, it’s too late because I am not about to spend the money again on that window. 🙁

Good call on the mask. It would be a bit jarring if the place you’re staying doesn’t have blackout shades 😉 we have blackout shades in the bedroom and don’t use them all of the time because I like waking up with the sun. Although I wish we had some shades in the living room because my books are getting faded 🙁

Do you think you’ll get any? Are you allowed to have any kind of shades you like in your place? (or do they want one cohesive look from the exterior?)

The sun causes some crazy bleaching. You may want to get something to block some of the UV to keep from damaging fabrics and such. You can get some pretty thin ones that let in light but still block harmful rays.

If you find Data-sized sleep masks please let me know – Heidi could use one too! Terry actually just bought a mask because he’s completely incapable of sleeping when it’s light out (I don’t have this problem). He used it for the first time on Friday night, hoping we could actually sleep in on Saturday. And Heidi was up and whining at us at 5:15 anyway. Didn’t she see the mask?!

How odd would it be for it to be daylight until nearly midnight? Wow! Does anyone get decent sleep there in the summer??

    • kilax says:

OH man! Heidi! Has Terri had luck with it since then?!

I wonder! I will have to ask my SiL and her family about it! 🙂

Good idea to get a sleeping mask – I will be so curious to hear how your trip to Alaska goes!

I think that’s the brand I had, too. I kept slipping or folding down the tops of my ears. Maybe I have a weirdly arranged head or something.

It’s weird that you can’t figure out if your rental has shades or not. Like, no one mentioned it in comments?

Data looks like such a creeper in that photo, aha!

Did you adjust the strap in the back? That’s keeping it in place for me.

Finding out about the first place we are staying at involves bugging the bride which I don’t want to do. 🙂 And I don’t want to put forth the effort to research the other place! HA! So I just got this, since I know I will also use it when Steven is using the iPad in bed and the light bugs me.

Muah ha ha. You know he is!

We slept with sleep masks when we went to Europe (I think it was carryover from attempting to sleep with them on the plane and then being hella jet lagged the next day) and LOVED it.They still sit on our bedside table and we talk about how we should “sleep with our masks” but…

We have blinds because we have neighbors, but I wouldn’t otherwise like blackout shades in the bedroom because I like to think I’m encouraging my body to keep some kind of normal rhythm (waking with the sun, etc). When I travel solo, I am known even then to sleep with the curtains open but with Matt, it’s blackout shades all the time and I always feel like even though I sleep better, I sleep LATER because I have zero concept of time.

    • kilax says:

Ha! What a good memory of them! I see why you don’t use them now! Do you like to wake with the sun even when it comes up so damn early?! 🙂 I’d love to, but I stay up so much later cause it’s out so late. I wonder if I need to live closer to the equator (jk, I could never take the heat!).

      • Melissa says:

Hahaha—I don’t necessarily get UP as the crack of dawn every day but I am at least cognizant of the time/environment. It’s like the alarm clocks that gradually emit light to wake you up (this is just the natural version–HA!)

  9. Karen says:

All the daylight will feel like a treat i bet 🙂 I hope you can sleep though. The sun is out till 10 p.m. at my Mom’s when i visit in summer, and I would go out and walk just because lol

  10. Maggie says:

Let me know if you find a cat-sized sleep mask.

You went to Alaska the same time of the year that my wife and I went (we went in June 2012). The amount of daylight was pretty wild to experience. Didn’t get dark until 11pm.
