Surprised!

You guys. I have another buying a drink in a convenience store story. This one has a nice ending, though.

It’s a million degrees here (88°, feels like 97°, dew point 74°) so I stopped at 7-Eleven after my run to buy a sports drink. I got in line at the counter, behind one other person, then got cut in line, by their friend who was all “where’d you go? I was looking all over for you!” and had their own separate stuff to buy.

Sigh. But whatever, right? No big deal.

Except I was drenched in sweat and the store was crowded, and the first person was taking forever to count out their change and I just wanted to get out of there and rehydrate and take a shower…

So when it’s the second person’s turn to pay, I am off in la la land thinking “I hope they’re paying with a credit card!” and “I am going to b*tch to Steven about getting cut in line” when that customer grabs my drink, gives it to the cashier, and tells her “it’s on me” since I was so sweet to let her cut and let them get on their way. Then she said a bunch of nice things to me and to enjoy my run (I was done but the thought was nice).

I was shocked. I was NOT expecting that.  And now I am inspired to do my own random act of kindness today… but not after cutting someone in line, ha.

  1. Too funny. I always think the most random stuff (like this) happens when out running

That’s nice of them but I always love when people are like “thanks for LETTING me do (whatever)” lol. I probably would have said okay but it’s nice to be asked!

    oh that is so great!

  4. ChezJulie says:

“Thanks for not bitching at me for cutting in line.” Pay it forward! 🙂

Exactly! And I still need to! I offered to get our security guard a coffee yesterday after he was drooling over my chai, but he said he can’t have drinks while he works 😉

My comment includes a little sarcasm because she inconvenienced you first, and then did something nice. So we should just pay forward the doing something nice part. 😉

    Awwww, that is awesome 🙂
Why are we living in rain forests!!???

  6. Marcia says:

Aww that’s sweet. Nice to know she realized what she did and appreciated your tolerance.

Wow! That was so nice. I should do something like that some time, like buying a drink for the person behind me in a cafe. Do you feel guilty that you were fuming about it silently? (I ask because I would feel really bad about it because I would get SO silently mad. Not because I’m judging you!)

I like to buy something for a stranger. Even though people have told me that is totally first world and not doing anyone any good… wtf. The point is to brighten someone’s day, not solve the world’s problems. Tangent.

You know me well. I did, a bit!

  8. Michelle says:

awh, I love hearing stories like this. I agree-always pay it forward.

  9. Haha that’s so nice of them! Someone cut me in line when I was buying a ginger ale after the NYC Marathon – I had the poncho and medal on, I couldn’t believe it. (And they didn’t buy the ginger ale!)

I always wonder how people secretly buy things for people…are they like, “Here an extra $7 in case the person buys the most expensive drink at Starbucks?” How do they know what to give the cashier? Do they take the rest as a tip?

Gah. Annoying – whether or not you had just run the race!

I was thinking about that at SB, to tell them to put the cash toward their drink (if it wasn’t enough) or to use it for that person, then maybe put it in the tip jar. Not sure what they do, though!
