Lame lunch run

By , June 11, 2009 1:07 pm

I have an appointment tonight, as well as guests in town, so I decided to get my run in during lunch, in the office gym. I was really looking forward to it all morning, hoping that it would break up the monotony of the day and get me energized for the afternoon.

But instead of having a carefree, relaxing run like I usually do, I ended up stressing out about work issues and watching the clock the entire time. I had to rush to get 3 miles in, then shower and get ready to go back to my desk (in one hour).

It feels good to have the run out of the way, but it wasn’t the quality I wanted it to be. I didn’t get to de-stress at all.

My marathon training schedule starts next Monday, and I think I am going to have to fit lunch time runs in a couple of times a week. Maybe next time it will be sunny and NOT raining*, so I can get outside and enjoy the run more.

Warning: exercise seems to be one of the only things I feel like writing about right now, so you’ll probably get a lot of that.

*This is June, right?

I hate it when that happens. I like to go to the gym and just lose myself, you know? The rhythm of the workout and mindless thoughts about nothing and then the time is gone. If you’re just stressing the whole time, the workout feels like it wasn’t worth it. Which sucks.

I sympathize with your plight of having stress ruin your run, but I’m jealous that you’ve already gotten your out of the way for today. I ate too much a lunch, so I’ll definitely be needing a good run this evening.

my building’s “gym” is about the size of my cubicle, with one super old nautilus machine, an eliptical, and a treadmill crammed in. it’s VERY hard to get a good workout in thre.

I couldn’t work out in the middle of the day. I’m just too girlie/prissy unfortunately. I don’t like being sweaty and my face turns red so easily. Those are my excuses!

Waiting for the damn rain to go away here to do any sort of serious outdoors working out.

When I was working out regularly at the gym, I used to go during lunch (before, so I worked up an appetite) and used to forgot as much about work as possible. I didn’t have my cell phone (left it in the car). just me and the running track and treadmill. The focus was nice and I miss it (I am trying to return… working towards this now).

Lunch runs always stress me out too! I always think I have so much time, but I end up rushing to get in three or four miles.

I hope you feel better soon! Marathon training soon, yippee! Maybe the consistency of a program and working towards a big goal will pep you up. You sound a little down lately. :-/

I wish I could use our gym during the day!! I’m sorry your run was not great though. 🙁 I didn’t even get to go to lunch today…but I know you’ve had those days too…ugh…
Vending machine pretzels is NOT a satisfactory lunch!!

  8. Amy says:

Ah, I’ve done that SAME run during lunch hour. It sounds like such a good idea in theory, but then rushing to get ready, do the run, then make yourself look presentable/not smelly afterwards is just a pain. BUT, I give you props for working out on an otherwise jam-packed day!!!

That reminds me: If you want to get outside for a run (or a walk or eating our lunch outside the Art Museum) one day, let me know. Just email me. Assuming the weather ever starts acting like we’re in Chicago and not Seattle.

Regardless of how crappy the run felt, as least it’s out of the way and you don’t have to stress about fitting it in anymore. right?

I hate those watching the clock stressed out runs! That is why no matter what, no matter how tired I am I always get up before the kids so I can run and not hav to worry about anything.

I hear you on the weather. We were planning to go to the beach tomorrow but it is supposed to be a high of 70. Way too cold for me to want to be in a bathing suit, much less want to swim outside!

  11. After I run I swear for forever and 4 hours and so trying to run, shower and get back to my desk in an hour sounds incredibly stressful. That is awesome that you did it though, even if you don’t feel great about it, that run is in the books!!

I always wondered how people could squeeze in a lunch time run…I feel like it would be so hurried and not relaxing like it should be!

Marathon training!! Yay!! I love training…maybe more than the marathon itself!

  13. Denise says:

Good luck with your marathon training. Hopefully it goes the way you want it to.

Love the new header picture!!!!! I remember you when your hair was light and really curly. Cutie pie! 😀

  14. aron says:

that is still awesome you got your run in over lunch! i have yet to do that. i bet after another couple it wont be as stressful since you will know what to expect timing wise. yayyyy marathon training!

  15. Shaina says:

Hey, at least you got out there and ran! Even though it wasn’t the fab run you were hoping for. I think that will evolve probably, as you get used to running at a different time of day.

Jess – I am the same way. I just want to let it all go during my work out and kind of zone out and focus on the run… didn’t happen during this one!

Ren – You’re right, even though the run was not ideal, it felt good to approach the evening knowing I didn’t have to stress about getting it in!

Alice – Ugh. What is the point of having a gym if it’s so small?!

sizzle – I was feeling the same way – I get so sweaty, I HAVE to take a shower. But… I don’t do much with my hair, so it’s working out. I need some hair help though.

martymankins – I like to build up the appetite too! I felt so deserving of my lunch when I got back! I hope you get back to the gym! Maybe just start with one day a week!

Mica – That is what I was thinking, “I will do a quick 45 min. 5-miler!” Yeah, well add on the time to get dressed before, and shower and stuff after… not happening! I have been a bit down. So far, my first week of marathon training is making me feel a bit better.

diane – I thought about you when I was down there. I thought, “Well, at least I HAVE a gym to use! Diane doesn’t.” I love pretzels, but you’re right – not a good lunch. I hope you get to slow down at work soon.

Amy – It’s a wonderful idea in theory! If I had a two hour lunch break, it would be perfect! 😉

Erin – I am happy I took you up on this offer – our run was a lot better! And I loved having a stress free day (running wise) afterwards!

tori – That is what I like to do when I have guests or am visiting someone – get up early enough so I can still get a good “me” run in, where I don’t have to stress! I thought of you when we were at Independence Grove on Sunday! The beach looked ready! And I didn’t see any scary birds 😉

Hotch Potchery – Good point. I got it in, and it’s over! 🙂

Susan – I think I am the same way, I love, love, LOVE to follow training!!! I will be sad when it’s over.

Denise – Thanks! My mom said to me, “Are you sure you want a picture showing on there showing you naked?” LOL. How old was I? 3? 4?

aron – Already, the second one was a lot better, but maybe because I got to go outside? Whatever it was, I’ll take it 😉

Shaina – I think you are right. I just gotta get used to a new routine!
