Don’t “just say no”

By , November 12, 2009 5:34 am

Oops, I am so used to saying “no thanks” to people trying to hand me things in downtown Chicago, that when a when a woman tried to give me a $10 Dunkin’ Donuts giftcard on Monday, I said “no thanks” without even thinking about.

My mother would be so dissapointed.

Even though I wouldn’t use it (I don’t drink coffee and I don’t believe they have vegan options), I am sure I could have found someone whould have (perhaps my donut afficionado husband?).

Oops.

Yeah, you gotta be on the lookout for those random acts of kindness. We were in line to pull into All State Arena for a hockey game and this guy gets out of the car in front of us and walks up to our window. Katie was instantly nervous but I rolled it down anyway. He asked us if we wanted a free parking permit for the stadium. Said that three other people either said no without listening or never rolled down their window. Saved us $10. We were quite happy.

Now if the same dude is holding a gun or knife… don’t roll down the window. 😉

It always takes me a while to process what someone has said when things like this happen. I would probably have said “no thanks” quickly folowed with “wait…what?”

I’m not a fan of dunkin donuts but my kids sure are!

I get so bombarded walking to the train station by people trying to sell or ask for things you just zone them out. You never expect someone to give you something. To bad you missed that one!

That could have been used to purchase $10 worth of donut holes for your sister. I’m so disappointed. 🙂

ha, i would have done the same thing. even if i’d taken it i would have felt guilty for being rude/ignoring so many other people, but only taking the one i DID want!!

  8. Sweets would’ve been so disappointed in you, too…

Funny enough, this morning as we went through the DD drive-through for his morning cup of joe, we were commenting that we need to get our regular server a gift card for Christmas this year. And I said, wouldn’t it be funny if we got her a Starbucks giftcard. hahaha – I’m evil.

  9. I come from a tiny town where people only hand out tiny bibles or shakers for the football game so I always take. So imagine my surprise when I was in Chicago and a dude hands me a CD and then chases me down, “that’s not free” and I respond,”then why hand it to me?”.

Too funny! I would have just ignore her, too. Even if I’d gotten it I wouldn’t use it. I’d give it to Jason (who does eat there in the mornings) but he would promptly forget it even existed and never use it. I suppose, then it’s good that I would have said “no”. Let it go to someone who will use it!

What!? They pass out gift cards on the streets of ChiTown? I better come visit. You never know, they may have had some string attached to the gift card so maybe you did the right thing in saying no!

  13. Back up and try again!! Usually I can spot the good freebies by the hoard of people around. But ugh, I hate the amt of flyers and junk that gets pushed on me on a daily basis.

  14. I have the same mentality as you!! sucks that you skipped dunkin though – best coffee around in my opinion.

Im not wild about their coffee, but they make a delicious hot chocolate. That comes in handy with the Chicago winter!

LOL, that’s funny! I just found out we have a new DD and was so excited, but I get the same way with people holding papers, fliers, etc. so it’s easy to do!
