Eating Animals Giveaway – Signed Copy!

By , November 30, 2009 5:11 am

When Steven and I attended Jonathan Safran Foer’s reading and discussion of Eating Animals we had him personally sign our copy of the book! How exciting! The only time I have ever had an author sign a book before this was when Frank Warren signed my copy of The Secret Lives of Men and Women (I also had him sign a book for my sister) – I have since lost interest in Post Secret. Ha ha.

Anyway, guess what?! I brought an extra copy of the book and had Foer sign it as well – so I can give it away to one of you lucky readers!

This book has been getting an amazing amount of press. I think part of the reason is because Foer delivers the message – that we need to start discussing whether it’s right or wrong to treat animals (for human consumption) the way they are being treated – in such a gentle, non-judgmental manner. You don’t feel put off reading this book – you feel intrigued to read more. Yes, there are some disturbing statistics, but they are not blared in your face. They’re just discussed as what they are – statistics.

A pescatarian coworker came with me to Foer’s reading. She hadn’t read the book yet, but started to right after the reading ended. When I saw her the next week, she told me she had finished most of the book and there was no way she could eat animals products every again. I was really surprised by the effect the book had on her. I didn’t feel like it pushed a vegan, or even much of a vegetarian agenda. But, Natalie Portman said Eating Animals turned her vegan as well. I’m just so surprised by the profound effect of this book!

Now, I don’t expect you to become vegetarian or vegan if you read it! I just expect you to think about it! I would love to hear what anyone else thinks of the book.

And on to the nitty gritty…

I would like to win because Saturday is my birthday! Yay me!

Seriously, though, I’m considering buying a copy, but an autographed one would be so much cooler. If you rig it so I can win, I will keep the autographed copy and go buy another copy (as I planned to anyway) and give that one away on my blog! Deal? So you’re gonna rig it, right? Woot!

Well, as much as I would love to read the book, I think you should rig it so kapgar wins because he has an awesome idea for giving back.

  3. I love giveaways 🙂

I would like to win a copy of it because I’m sure it could provide me with lots of helpful info in my newfound vegetarian state of being 🙂

ps- Kapgar, your idea is very cool!!

But I still want to win. 🙂

Wow…what a great giveaway! I’d love to read it because, while I’m not vegetarian or vegan, I will say I’ve become more interested lately in the meat I AM eating (which isn’t very often – a few times a week, maybe?).

I don’t think they played “Food, Inc.” here, but I’d like to rent it. It’s definitely sparked my curiousity, and we all should know what’s going into our mouths! (that’s what she said).

This is an awesome giveaway. I found your blog through Healthy Tipping Point. I want to read “Eating Animals” cause I’ve seen a lot of the press about the book, and it looks so interesting. I haven’t eaten meat (still eating dairy though) in about six months and am trying to decide my next move: stay eating the way I am now, cut out dairy … Anyway, this book might give me some insight about what to do! Thanks!

  6. I have a book signed by John Grisham that I won from usatoday.com.

To be honest, I want to read the book, but then again I also don’t. I am ignorant to many processes involving animal consumption and to me, that is probably bliss.

In a nutshell, I will probably read the book then become a freak who still uses meat products but cries when I do it.

    Wow! Great giveaway, Kim!

I’ve been really interested in this book since I read your review of it. I think the reason I’d want to win it most is because I think my husband might respond to the way Foer goes about delivering his message. He gets kind of tired of listening to me go on and on about it. I’d love it if he’d become veg., or closer to it.

I’ll link this on my blog, but seeing as how you are one of my only readers…I’m not sure how much good it will do. 😉

Don’t enter me to win, I don’t take enough time to read and would rather it go to someone who will give it the time it deserves!
But…something that has been on my mind in regard to veganism and such…does the book touch on things like animal testing at all? I feel like that’s a big part of veganism that doesn’t get talked about much (well, except by PETA, ha!) and even as a meat-eater it is something I have really strong feelings about. I’m just curious if it’s been addressed in any of your readings…

  9. *lynne* says:

    Hi Kim,
As mentioned before, I intend to get my hands on this book, one way or another, because I have a feeling what Foer writes will resonate deeply with me. I can always get the library copy, but owning a signed copy would be so cool, of course 🙂

  10. JENNA says:

I went to one of his readings in NYC and am still kicking myself for not buying a copy of my own. As a vegan already I want to read the book to learn more about the animal industry so I can share that information with my friends and family who are greatly ignorant of what goes on with the food that they eat.

    I’d love to win it.

I went vegetarian for 10 years before adding back in fish only within the last few years. I’ve been rethinking that decision lately.

I’d love to win Eating Animals. I’m (covertly) trying to convert my husband to at least vegetarian, and (overtly) trying to convert my parents and in-laws. I think this book, based on all the reviews and press I’ve read, will help make my point a little more effectively than I do at times!

Btw, just found your blog today and I’ve been looking around, and I’m excited to read more!

Thanks for this contest! I am dying to read this book! I am a big fan of Safran Foer, I read the passage about the hero being a vegetarian (No sausage??) in the book “Everything is Illuminated”, out loud to several members of my family it was so funny and connected so well to how I feel when you get those looks like you are such a freak. So I cannot wait to read this new book totally devoted to vegetarianism and veganism. Keeping my fingers crossed that I might win!

  21. Hi Kim,

    I dropped in from Amy’s blog Fit & Fabulous…

wow, what a wonderful giveaway! I can truthfully say I’ve never heard of the book but now that you have piqued my interest I’d be keen on reading it.

Thanks for the contest…when I update my blog, I’ll come back to reference the giveaway link.

    Cheers!!

  22. I’ve been hearing about this book everywhere and am itching to read it, but I put myself on a book-buying ban until after the holidays. This seems like a good way around it 🙂

And how cool that you got to go to a signing. I went to one last year with Christopher Moore, who is my all time favorite author. I was practically giddy. I love books…LOL

I love to hear about how books can change people’s lives – it’s such a rare yet truly fantastic thing. I also really admire people who are veg/vegan. I can’t point to a specific book, but I can 100% say that food industry related publications have altered how I live my life, and this would be a fantastic one to add to the list. It’s in my library queue now!

I want that book to convince myself to become vegetarian… i work in the capacity of animals everyday so I’m totally on the fence but it’s something I want to do intuitively, and i feel like this book could also give me the final informative kick to become a vegetarian!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  25. caitlin says:

i wanna win! ive heard so many things about this book and would love to check it out!!!!

  26. Izz says:

My best friend is a vegan and I edited her book review essay on Foer’s book. It really got me thinking about transitioning meat out of my life (which I’ve already started to do) and moving on to become vegetarian. I want to do my own research and not be swayed or convinced by anyone. I believe reading this book will positively inform me about one of the biggest lifestyle changes I’m about to make, and help me on the path to future development as a person!

  27. natasha says:

I’m a vegetarian but now it seems like it’s by default, because it’s been so long. I’d love to become an informed vegetarian! Also, JSF is one of my favourite authors, but I didn’t even know about this particular book until I read your post! I can’t wait to read it! 😀
