Camera Envy

Thank you for your comments yesterday on the family emergency. We have a family member in severe condition and I appreciate your thoughts!

I had to drive from Round Lake, IL to Kansas City, MO yesterday. Instead of going straight there though, I made a few stops on the way (the trip ended up being 570 miles) – in Evansdale/Cedar Falls to see my parents and sister, and in Ames to grab dinner with Amanda, from Vegacious.

I find it amusing that I don’t mind talking on the phone with a blogger and look forward to meeting with them for the first time, but that I don’t like doing that sort of thing for work. Is anyone else like that – are you more comfortable with meeting/talking to other bloggers than you are in other social situations?

I’m not saying I am a social misfit (well, that much), just that I find myself more comfortable talking to bloggers – probably because I already know a bit about them.

Anyway, back to the point. I found Amanda’s blog about two weeks ago through the “blogs by location” function on Healthy Living Blogs. I was looking at bloggers in Iowa, and was excited to see one in Ames, where I went to school. I started commenting, and even won a giveway on her blog. So when I was driving through Ames, I thought, “why not meet up for dinner?”

Meeting with Amanda went like many of the other blogger meet-ups I’ve done. You talk and talk and don’t want it to end! Unfortunately, I did have to get on the road, so I hope I will get to visit with her again someday! She’s really down to earth and excited about life… which I love.

So why the post title? Amanda took a few pictures of our food with her new Canon Rebel, then we had the waitress take a picture of us together. From Steven’s Canon Elph (which I use):

From her Rebel:

Ugh. Those DSLRs take amazing pictures! So much clearer! Look at the pictures here she took of our food. It looks like it is from a magazine.

It would be fun to play around with one of those cameras someday.

I hope you family is getting some good news. It sounds scary.

I’m glad you got to meet up with a new friend in the midst of it all. Its such fun to meet bloggers…you already feel like you know the person and have things in common.

    Hope your family is OK!

I’ve met up with a handful of bloggers and I’m always a little nervous at first until I realize that I already kind of know them. That does help. There are automatically things to talk about because you’re already familiar with the other person’s interests.

I love to talk to bloggers!!!

With that said, you can contact me any time you need anything!!!! Hope it all works out- thoughts, hugs and prayers!

I hope everything is all right!

I’ve only met one other blogger, but we were friends before I knew she blogged. I keep going to Chicago during the week, so you and I never get to meet up!

I agree, SLR cameras are amazing. I don’t have time to take as many pictures as I would like.

Let me know the next time you are downtown! I work in the city and we could always meet for lunch ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. The difference in picture quality is amazing! Normally I don’t care about having my small camera (which is still pretty great) but that pictures makes me want a nice, fancy one.

I’ve only ever met one blogger but it was awesome – no awkwardness at all. In fact, I think we pretty much talked nonstop right from when we met and until we got into our cars to leave. As for other social situations.. I’m usually okay but it was definitely easier meeting another blogger.

SLR cameras are amazing and a bit addicting. Though sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed whipping mine out everywhere I go.

I haven’t met any bloggers yet ๐Ÿ™ someday!

I hope the family member is on the up and up.
If you’re going to be hanging around Kansas City for a little bit, let me know! I’ll be there Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday morning, and looking for someone/somewhere to grab dinner!

      Thanks Lauren ๐Ÿ™‚

I will probably still be here Tuesday evening! Depending on how things are going, I would love to meet up.

  9. I will email you the actual photo file!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ So glad to meet you and chat. Tons of fun! Thinking of you and your family too…

Thinking of you and your family. And holy 570 miles – for sanity it was probably nice to stop a few times!

  11. Karin says:

So sorry to hear about your family member! I hope things are better now :-/..
I had two blogger meet-ups this August (the very first ones) and loved them! To me it’s so easy to talk to like-minded people even though I’ve never met them before.

  12. Anne says:

My thoughts are with you and your family…I guess I missed the update. Hugs ((()))

That camera definitely does a great job…wow!
And, that’s A LOT of mileage…good thing you took a bloggy break ๐Ÿ™‚

I bought a Canon Rebel last summer and I love it! I also got a Canon Elph at the beginning of this year so I could tote it around in my purse. I like the Elph very much for it’s convenience but my Rebel definitely takes much better photos.

  14. Erin says:

Apparently the secret to being a better photographer IS getting a better camera ๐Ÿ™‚ I keep hoping my little point-and-shoot will miraculously take good photos even with my lack of skill using it. I guess I need an SLR for that to happen.

  15. I actually think point and shoots get a bad rap. Many of them take really great photographs. What’s not so great? In-camera flashes (though, same holds true for a lot of DSLRs, too). And also? It’s not the camera that takes great photos, but the person behind the camera. Just my 2 cents.

  16. I heart my Canon Rebel : )

  17. Holly says:

I’m hoping everything is okay….thinking of you and your family!

Wow, it’s amazing to see the side-by-side difference. I have the Elph, too. The DSLRs are just awesome…my sisters both have them and I have MAJOR camera envy. All the time!

  18. Alice says:

haha, it’s pretty crazy the difference a camera can make. “real” photogs say all the time that the camera is the least relevant part of a good photo, but all i know is that since getting my dslr, my photos have looked WAY better… ๐Ÿ™‚
