Gu for me and you (giveaway)

By , December 2, 2010 5:24 am

I received $130 in Amazon gift cards through our rewards program at work (woo hoo!) and what did I spend the money on?

GU! (…and holiday gifts that are not pictured)

I decided that Chocolate Outrage and Vanilla Bean are my favorite flavors. It’s kind of funny, because for the LONGEST time I was afraid to try Chocolate Outrage. But Mica told me how good it was, so I gave it a go and liked it! And then one day, it got cold in my pocket and oh man, it was just like pudding! Yum yum yum. Hopefully these things won’t entirely freeze in my pockets during the winter like Shot Bloks do.

Anyway, these boxes are pretty huge, so I decided to give away two of each flavor, PLUS two of the Espresso Love flavor, which despite Mica saying her boyfriend likes… I have never been brave enough to try. I don’t like coffee to begin with! Maybe you do?

This is kind of off-topic, but has anyone watched the documentary Running the Sahara? We just finished it last night. It’s the story of three men who spend 111 days running across the Sahara Dessert and through six countries (Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Egypt – map here) – about 4,300 miles. They run through all sorts of crazy weather and political conditions, as you can imagine.

Photo from here.

It was an interesting story, not without its drama. I was wondering what anyone else who saw it thought of it.

So far I’ve only ever had shot bloks during my long runs but I’ve been wanting to try GU but I’m a little scared of it (winning would give me a good excuse to try it). First I need to actually go on some long runs. hehe. I don’t think a 5 mile run requires mid-run fueling.

I don’t have a mid-run snack at all. I don’t really think my runs are quite far enough to supplement it just yet. But I do enjoy pre- and post-run Jelly Belly Sport Beans. Good stuff! I even put them on my Christmas list. Gotta admit I’ve always been intrigued by Gu, but just haven’t tried it yet.

  3. That documentary sounds fascinating — I’ll have to watch. I don’t run long enough distances yet for a mid-run snack but I do like to fuel well before and after workouts with all-natural fruit snacks. 🙂

I have eaten the clif shot bloks and I like them but they are hard to chew and run at the same time. Gus are good on the go for me so I don’t have to stop and eat.

  5. I LOVE the vanilla bean- it’s highly recommended by me. 🙂

Oh and are you still running in my town this weekend? Let me know- I’d love to cheer you on or meet up after!

i’m not sure that i have a mid-run snack yet. i havent’ found anything that i’m in love with. but i’ve never tried guu either!

  7. Tonia says:

My favorite mid run fuel is Chocolate Outrage GU or Mike and Ikes (although I don’t usually carry them with me).

I have seen that movie and I love it. I can’t imagine running that far for that long. But it definitely inspired me to get moving!

I’d love to win some Gu! I know what you mean about being scared of the ones with lots of caffeine… I used some Gu’s during the half marathon last week and they were great. But I still like medjool dates the best as a workout snack.

I did not see that documentary but I did see one here about someone who did the marathon des Sables and that sounded HORRIFIC – ugh!

  9. Katie H. says:

lol I LOVE that you used part of your rewards card to purchase gu. That’s awesome! My fave way to refuel mid-run is with chocolate mint gu- so delicious!

  10. Unfortunately my running progress seems to have ground to a halt so I haven’t even made it to the point where I’ve needed any “in run” re-fueling 😉

  11. Tony says:

I enjoyed the Documentary. I thought it was interesting that they would go through all those issues to complete it. I would have given up after some of those hurdles they faced.

  12. Mica says:

    Favorite mid-run snack?? Hmmm…GU I guess. That’s the only thing I’ve ever eaten mid-run.

Too bad I can’t be hardcore at say Krispy Kreme donuts or something…

  13. Tracy says:

I watched that movie ages ago, and I barely remember it – except that I thought that the guy who was in charge was kind of a jackass. More than kind of.

Something that I give a lot of thought to is running addiction. I’ve met many runners and ultrarunners who were alcoholics and drug addicts who then turned to running as part of their recovery, only to stay trapped in the throes of addiction – but to running. And so society encourages their addiction, because it’s a “healthy” one. I’m not criticizing or condemning this, it’s just something I give a lot of thought to.

  14. Stephany says:

So, I’ve never had a mid-run snack. But I’ve wanted my mom to try these for the longest time and I think they would be GREAT for her! 🙂

  15. Ayla says:

I’ve never seen that documentary but it sounds interesting! I think it would be so much fun to do something like that!

  16. AllieCat says:

I love the Vanilla Bean Gu!!! It’s the best!!! The documentary sounds interesting too. Wish I knew it was on! Can’t wait unitl the movie Hood to Coast comes out!!!

  17. Kristina says:

I’m a big fan of the Clif shot blocks – usually after a run, however. I’m running a half-marathon in February, so I might need to start fueling midway through longer runs!
Thanks for recommending that documentary – sounds really interesting. I love travel/adventure stories.

  18. cindy says:

I love the blackberry GU the best and that’s what I usually take on my runs. I also have taken the Lara bars with me.

    I am a chocolate outrage GU girl…
