Training Week 83

Day 575 | May 16, 2011: yoga

Wow. I do not even remember the last time I did yoga (how many times have I written that on this blog?). I did the YogaWorks Beginners DVD, and it felt more challenging that it used to. No surprise there!

Day 576 | May 17, 2011: 5 m run + strength class (= bad idea!!!)

Well, I am NOT doing that again – running then going straight to my strength class. I was wiped out, in a really bad way. And not many people were at the strength class, because they were doing the club speedwork session (this is the one night it was on a Tuesday, it will be on Wednesday the rest of the summer), so I was partnered up with the trainer and didn’t get much of a break! We worked with medicine balls and did some boxing. My heart was beating really hard during the boxing part, and, yeah – I was out of it.

And the run before? So windy. Why? WHY?! Why must it be so windy all the time?! I just want to cry, when I am running in to the wind. I am so over it. So over it. I also had a major GI issue that pretty much demoralized me. But I won’t go in to the details. Let’s just say it is a very good thing I had another part of shorts in the car.

Wah.

Distance: 5.0 |  Temp: 61° | Time: 48:48 | Avg Pace: 9:45 | 1: 9:28 | 2: 9:56 | 3: 9:52 | 4: 9:39 | 5: 9:48

I should mention, in the morning, I met with the Ragnar Madison to Chicago relay team! I am running with Erin and her work running group. I will be running Leg 8 – 6.7 miles, 2.5 miles and 9.9 miles, for a total of 19.1 miles!

Day 577 | May 18, 2011: cross

Recumbent Bike Time: 40:00 | Distance: 6.83 | Set on “Manual,” Resistance Level 5.0

Day 578 | May 19, 2011: cross

Recumbent Bike Time: 30:00 | Distance: 5.32 | Set on “Manual,” Resistance Level 6.0

Day 579 | May 20, 2011: 3 m run + 4 m run

For some reason, I got it in my head that I needed to do a two-a-day to prepare for the relay – even though I was telling Erin all week that I didn’t think it was a good idea. Well, it wasn’t a good idea. The first run was hot and my right calf/shin was bothering me on the second one. I should have just done one quality long run! Steven rode his bike with me during the first run, so it was at least nice to have company! I think I have been feeling the runny blahs because I have been running so much by myself (I haven’t been able to meet with the club to run).

Distance: 3.0 |  Start Temp: 67° |  End Temp: 69° | Time: 28:50 | Avg Pace: 9:35 | 1: 9:31 | 2: 9:33 | 3: 9:42
Distance: 4.0 | Start Temp: 69° |  End Temp: 66° | Time: 38:32 | Avg Pace: 9:37 | 1: 9:23 | 2: 9:33 | 3: 9:48 | 4: 9:45 | 5: 9:45

Day 580 | May 21, 2011: cross

I attended SELF Magazine’s Workout in the Park with my mom, sister, Erin, and my sister’s friend Abby. This is actually the third year I have done this workout – in 2009 I did it with my friend Diane, and last year my mom and I did it together. It’s fun – they set up a main stage and have different 20-minute workouts you can try. There are also yoga classes and a toning zone that you can sign up for, and a bunch of booths with freebies and advertisements.

It only rained a little bit – we were modeling our umbrellas!

This year I tried four classes on the main stage – Sexy Stretch, Top It Off, Masala Bhangra and Retro-Robics. My favorite was Masala Bhangra. It’s an Indian inspired dancing workout! I am not very good at it, but the instructor was really good at teaching the steps and it was fun to try.  I also really like the instructor from Top It Off. She has been there the last three years and is high energy and fun! All of the instructors that come are local Chicago instructors from Crunch Gym.

We also tried a yoga class called BodyART that I didn’t really care for. It was more cardio yoga, and less stretching. We had a great view during class though:

We also got a ton of freebies. And I got to try on the Asics Kayanos! They felt really good.

I really have fun at this workout. It’s only $15 (I think?), you get a free SELF subscription when you sign up, get to try a bunch of classes and get a bunch of freebies! Even though they seem to repeat the classes, I still like it. I will probably be there again next year!

Day 581 | May 22, 2011: cross

My mom and sister and I participated in our local no-kill animal shelter’s (Save-A-Pet) annual Petathlon – a 1-mile walk or 5K to raise money for the shelter. My sister had a donation page and raised over $150 (some of it from blogger friends – thank you!).

A lot of people brought their dogs to participate! I was surprised by how well behaved they were. It was fun to see them all.

The shelter had local animal businesses there, as well as fun games for the pets, and a tie-dye station!

I can’t wait to see how it turns out tomorrow!

We arrived at 12:00 and checked out all the booths, and did the walk at 1:20.

I was happy the walk was shaded – it was in the high 80s and I was hot!

Afterward, there was lunch included with your entry (I had a vegan hot dog!). It was a nice event put on by the shelter. I was happy we could participate and help the animals out! Our entry fee ($35) will feed one animal for a month!

Week Summary: 12.00 miles

I feel like I got back in to the workout groove this week! I did want to do another long run on Sunday, but I was waiting for the temps to go down (high 80s? no thanks!), and by the time they did, we had a crazy thunderstorm. Guess I will be getting up early on Monday!

This is a busy week! I’m jealous that you did the self work in millennium park, I wanted to do that but I never got my act together for it. It looks like you had tons of fun.

  2. Amy says:

Sounds like a fun week, except for that windy run – I hate wind, too, it makes me crazy!

  3. I meant to see if I was feeling well enough to bring my one daughter to the save a pet walk. We talked about it weeks ago and then I kind of forgot/was too tired. Hopefully they will do another one at some point because she is really sad that she missed it. Looks like it was a lot of fun!

You should go next year! This was the 25th annual, so they must do it each year. This is the first time it was at Camp Duncan though.

  4. J says:

Great job this past week! Sometimes switching things up and doing different stuff helps to get you back in the groove. I volunteered at a race yesterday and it definitely made me want to run!

  5. Mica says:

Sorry that the two-a-day didn’t go so well. I also thought that I needed those for R2R, but I never did one!

I didn’t really get how the Self event worked, but it sounds fun! I wish they had more events down in lonely CU. 🙁

    • kilax says:

Ha ha. It is hard to describe the SELF thing. It’s open from 11-3 and they have a main stage with workouts going on, and booths and other things to try. They have 20 min workouts, with 5 min breaks in between (maybe the last workout was 30 mins?).

You should come do it next year! They do it every year in San Fran, NYC and Chicago 🙂

  6. Kandi says:

Sounds like you had a great week. That Self event looks fun. Were the umbrellas part of the swag?
The pet event looks like fun too! I’ve considered taking Delilah to something like that. We’ve done a none pet-related 2 mile fun run together before but they didn’t have it this year. It would have been this past Saturday but they decided to focus on the 5 miler and not have the 2 mile run at all. I considered the 5 miler (not with Delilah, she can’t run that far) but forgot about it and slept through it. Oh well. One of these years I’ll do it.
I really like that blue shirt you wore to the pet event! And cute puppy pictures!! Yay!

The umbrellas were part of the swag. There was also Garnier hair products, coconut water drinks, pop chips, and other random stuff.

  7. i was doing so great with yoga and it has kind of dropped off my schedule lately. I really need to get back to it

I wish self would come here!! But i do know Shape is coming soon and I’ll do it!

Running in the wind is the WORST. pure misery. The Self Workout sounds pretty fun — and looks very crowded and popular! I wonder what it’s like to exercise with so many people around. Oh wait, I guess any race is kind of like that…

Loved your comments. And Portman spoiled Thor by generally being an overly earnest, yet empty character. I am always left feeling really unconnected to her characters in movies. BUT, I would still see the film. It is otherwise really entertaining, even though she will leave you rolling your eyes a few times…

  9. bobbi says:

Wind makes me stomp like a 4 year old. I am such a baby about it! That Self workout looks like a great time, and the Save a Pet walk too…

Have you picked a Spring race, or are you backing off til Ragnar? Wanna run 20 on Saturday? 😉 John just found out he has a night meeting on Wednesday so I’ll have to miss track and I’m totally pouting 🙁

    • kilax says:

Aww, I am bummed you won’t be at track! I was looking forward to seeing you!

I was going to ask if you wanted me to ride with you during your 20-miler, but Saturday won’t work (I am racing on Sunday and want fresh legs). I may do a short (3-miler) on Friday if you want to join?

That SELF workout in the park thing looks like so much fun! I would love to do something like that.
