Social vacations

Check out Gina’s awesomely hilarious recap of the Cherry Tree 10-Miler Relay.

Sometimes when Steven and I travel on social vacations* I feel like the whole trip has gone by and I haven’t spent much time talking to Steven – I will have been too busy talking to the people we were visiting. Steven and I get in the plane/car/whatever to go home and I’m like “Hey! How have you been these past few days?! What’s new with you?!!!”

Not to say we are ignoring each other or not talking to each other – we just aren’t having those one-on-one conversations I am so used to having every day. It’s a weird feeling – like we have been on a vacation together, but not entirely. There will be conversations he participated in/things he did that I missed and vice versa. And even if we spend the whole day together, we are around other people, so when we are alone at night, before we collapse in bed from exhaustion, I’m like “How are you?” Then I pass out before we even converse.

Not saying it’s a bad thing at all, it’s just interesting. Steven left for NYC on Sunday morning (the 12th) and I arrived there late Wednesday night (the 15th). We just got back yesterday, so it feels like I have not seen him for awhile, even though we were together the last five days having a great time.

Can anyone else relate to this nonsense?

In my mind, it’s just pointing out the different types of vacations Steven and I take. Most of them are social, like this, and we love it. We rarely do something just the two of us, although we would like to for our five-year anniversary in September!

Alright, so what did we do in NYC this time? There was LOTS of eating.

Lots of Luca Snorgling.

Exotic Car Driving (first two photos by Gina)

General Touristy-ness

Lots of chillin’

Ha ha ha.

It’s really hard for me to leave NYC, not knowing the next time we will see Gina, Steve and Luca. We all want to plan our next trip, but our schedules are too wonky to book tickets now. And I am such an impulse, instant-gratification, got to do it NOW sort of girl, it’s hard on me. But I know it will happen. Patience…

The good news is, this trip is EXACTLY what I needed (just like last year). I felt stress-free and happy the entire time. I forgot about the issues bothering me at work – I couldn’t even remember what they are. I hope that continues for awhile. I told Steven I am going to try a lot harder to leave work issues at work. I think I will even leave my work phone there and ignore it during non-work hours when I have to bring it home.

*Going to see people, such as visiting my family or Gina & Steve.

I’m so glad you had a good visit and were able to forget about your troubles for a while. Gina’s race report WAS hilarious! Thanks for sharing…

Looks like a great trip and a great way to get your mind off work!

I am pretty good with leaving work at work but Brian is not. He loves to talk about work at home and I hate it. Kind of stinks that we both work in the same field so I know exactly what he is talking about.

YAY for a fun, relaxing, RECHARGING trip! I love the picture of Luca with your scarf on his head 🙂

Leaving work at work is a sanity saving skill. Good luck – it is definitely worth the effort!

Miss you – let’s try to plan a run or a dinner or something soon…

Miss you too! Maybe we can do diner after class next week? Or something that weekend?

Or, I am having Britt and Erin over for lunch after the 5K Sunday if you want to stop by 🙂

I know what you mean! After you guys left, I said to Steve, so when did you get into town! It felt so good laughing a TON and not stressing about work! Thank you for being such fun house guests!

    • kilax says:

I am happy you guys had yesterday to chill then! 🙂 Well, do laundry and clean the house and nap and run… oh wait, where was the chill time?

I still feel bad that I made such messes while I was visiting! LOL! But we did have a blast!

  6. Kelsey says:

yay for a stress free mini vaycay!

  7. Marcia says:

How fun! I love NY and I’m so glad you enjoyed and left your work stress behind you!

  8. Gingerfoxxx says:

Glad the trip did it’s trick! Did you really drive one of those cars???

    • kilax says:

My husband and friend’s husband drove them. They had a Groupon for three laps at a track in NJ 🙂

My husband and I did the Chicago Exotic Car tour in 2007 and got to drive a bunch of exotics. Well, I was the rider.

  9. Kayla says:

So glad you had a great trip and a great break from work!

  10. Laurel says:

So glad you had such a great time. You needed to decompress and your trip did the trick.

  11. I just finished reading all your posts about New York. Wasn’t the weather amazing this weekend? PERFECT for running a race – you totally lucked out! I’ve always found New York to be a very easy place to visit, but I think a lot of that has to do with knowing people there and consistently visiting over the years.

  12. Erin says:

Hmm, I can’t say I’ve ever had that experience.

I’m so happy your trip was a good pick-me-up! Now, try to hold onto that feeling and don’t let work bog you down again. You have a good idea, there, with leaving your work phone at work when you don’t need it. People need to get used to others not being available 24-7!

  13. Amy says:

Sounds like you guys had a great time! And I totally know what you mean – when we visit my family in the US I spend so much time with my mom and sisters I feel like I kind of “ignore” my husband and kids. But then they are busy hanging out with the cousins, grandpa and the brothers-in-law, so it’s not like they don’t have anything to do!

  14. Courtney says:

It looks like y’all had an AMAZING time! Not that I am the least bit surprised!!! I’m glad you had a chance to destress and get away!! I know it was good for all of y’all!!
    =^..^=

  15. Looks like a great trip! I am dying to go to New York one day!

  16. The Linz says:

Oh this sounds like such a fun trip! I know what you mean though about having to check in with hubs even when you are on the same trip. We did a road trip this past weekend and had a friend of his in the car too — so it was never really the two of us alone. It’s easy to get caught up in everything going on, but good to check in on each other. I did a check in after the trip to make sure we were on the same page.

  17. ChezJulie says:

GREAT! I am so glad you had a fun head break from work.

  18. AH! Looks so fun! I’m glad you got to go see them. I’m interested to hear about the fancy car driving!

    • kilax says:

Gina got a groupon for her husband for his bday, and got one for Steven too! It was a “exploratory” lap in an Aston Martin (to get used to the course) then three laps in a car of your choice. Steven drove the Ferrari – we had driven one before and loved it!

  19. Etta says:

Before G was born and we’d go home to visit, he’d want to go hang out with his dad alone and I’d want to spend time with our families together. Scratch that. I just didn’t want to spend awkward time alone with my own family. 😛
