Too early?

What do you guys think – is it too early to be buying holiday gifts? How about thinking* about buying them?

I think I can answer my own question. Yes Kim, it is too early, because:

  • You have only figured out half of the October birthday gifts
  • You have not planned out your Halloween costume
  • You haven’t even drawn gift exchange names in your family (yet that did not stop us from picking up something for my sister’s fiancé the other day, oops)
  • Most of your friends are thinking about running their fall marathons – maybe your focus should be on running too

Ha ha. I think I ask this question on my blog every year, only earlier and earlier each year. Hey! I waited until October 1! The truth is, I have had holiday gift ideas since mid-summer. I think what I will do is add the ideas on to our shared gift idea google doc (yeah, Steven and I are that dorky) and focus on some of those other things on the list…

*what I mean is, planning out ideas for what to get certain people

No! It’s not too early! I have a couple things I’m making & I have it on my calendar to get started this week! Especially if you have a lot of gifts to buy, who wants to shell out a ton of money all at once? Get to shopping, then you can be stress free November & December!

actually, I prefer to be done by Thanksgiving. I hate the stores before Christmas. At this rate, everyone might be getting cookies, unless I am employed soon.

I don’t think it’s too early. I actually bought something online (granted it was a groupon good so it was limited time offer) that I plan to give to Joey for christmas. I’ll get him other things but I saw something for a killer deal that I’ve been wanting to get him anyway.

It’s never too early. I’ve logged ideas in Google Docs too.

We actually have a ‘gift closet’ and buy gifts for people throughout the year. The nice thing about that is that we don’t feel QUITE so overwhelmed financially in October, November, December. We even have future presents for people (not this year but next year…)!

  6. I don’t think it’s too early!!! We’re putting away money for Christmas starting this month, so it’s definitely not too early. You know me though, plan plan plan!!!

  7. I don’t think it is too early! And that photo of Data is priceless!!!

all of my holiday shopping is done on Black Friday-literally, I save up money all year for it and then go crazy on Black Friday. once I’m done buying everyone’s xmas presents, the rest of the $$$ gets spent on myself…I CANT WAIT

  9. Never too early – if you find the right present, why not? Laima and I used to make all our family presents, so we could do that anytime we wanted. 🙂

  10. Whoa. If you can plan ahead and start shopping for gifts now, I think you should! That’s amazing! I’m not good about that…then I get to do the last minute scramble.

I don’t think it is too early. I like to pick things up all year as I see them. It is so much less stressful than trying to buy everything in 2-3 weeks, and I end up with much more meaningful presents for everyone.

  12. I’ve learned to keep an ongoing list on my phone. Otherwise, I draw serious blanks on December 21st or whenever and freak out a little… lol

  13. I was thinking about this just last night. The way I figure it, if I start buying presents now, I may actually be able to afford Christmas.

  14. Pete B says:

At least you are not planning for gifts for the Holidays in 2013!

  15. October is definitely the month I start thinking about gift buying. I begin making lists of who we want to buy gifts for and start jotting down notes of what to get them. Sometimes I see things on sale that strike me as perfect for one of the gifts and I’ll buy it. I will say that starting early (in whatever format it takes) makes December so much less stressful for me.

Its never too early. More power to you! I’m the seat of the pants last minute, desperate shopper and it sucks.

  17. Kayla says:

Not at all! If I see something that I knew someone would enjoy (or its a good price) I buy it, even if it is February. I actually was just asking my nieces and nephews for gift ideas this weekend (but I also don’t know if I will see them before christmas). Although I didn’t get very far. I’m not buying a camera and or an iphone for the 7 and 9 year old. haha. I think I’ll have to ask again later but I have definitely started thinking about it as well.

  18. Meghan says:

Ok, you had me at Google doc! I used one to plan a girls trip to NYC and now I am obsessed!

  19. I envy you and your ability to not procrastinate holiday shopping! It’s by far my biggest stressor during the holiday season because I wait until the last minute every year! Luckily, I’m Russian and we celebrate New Years instead of Christmas (not sure why…) so I get all the post-holiday seasons!

I was in Kohl’s last week and saw the Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving decorations all in the same section, and it was only September. To top it off, when I was driving to meet friends to run on Sunday morning when it was still dark, I saw a house that had Christmas lights on the front it and they were on. When I told one of the guys I was running with about it, he asked if they were Halloween lights, which is a good point. However, I drove by extra slow because I was so astonished and they were definitely Christmas lights. It made me sad to see them up already.

  21. martymankins says:

When it’s not even Halloween yet, and still even more time before Thanksgiving comes along, it’s too early to be buying Christmas gifts.

  22. chezjulie says:

Yes! It’s too early! It’s not even Halloween yet!

  23. Erin says:

Nope, not too early! I already have gifts for people stashed in my closet and ideas for other people in my head!
