Friday Question #234 / Myo-Release Ball Giveaway WINNER

Do you feel like you get less enjoyment out of eating food if it’s broken?

Maybe chocolate is a bad example…

Muah ha ha. That question makes no sense. Let me (try to) explain.

We were shopping last Saturday and I had a chocolate bar in the cart. Steven was putting things on top of it, and I said to him “Be careful not to smash my chocolate bar! It’s not as much fun to eat if it’s broken.”

He rolled his eyes at me. And told me that most people get over caring about their food being broken after adolescence. So I told him I was going to ask a Friday Question about it and PROVE. HIM. WRONG.

I have to say, that chocolate bar did end up getting broken, and I still got the same enjoyment out of it, because I was going to break it up anyway. Crap! Did I just disprove my whole argument?! No – I do get a bit sad if other things are broken – Luna bars, graham crackers, candy bars… basically, things I want to eat whole. And if a bag of chips has a clear part on the front to see in, I always try to get the bag with the most “whole” chips.

The winner of the Myo-Release Ball Giveaway is Alyssa! Alyssa, please email me (kilax@ilaxstudio.com) your mailing address and I will send the ball your way!

  1. For me, chocolate is still mighty enjoyable if broken. I noticed that when my mom and I went for our chocolate workshop, all the pretzels they gave us were broken. I assume it’s because the class was a way to make money with minimal investment and that the chocolate makers saved the slightly damaged stuff for us. When I bake, I save the slightly damaged stuff for Tim to eat. He doesn’t mind 🙂

  2. I break all my food up. In fact, I’ll take a dark dove bar and smash it before I open it. Eating little pieces makes it last longer 🙂

  3. I’m with you on this, I like things to be intact when I eat them. Even if I’m planning on breaking something into pieces (like chocolate or a granola bar), I get enjoyment out of breaking it up (part of the process of eating it I guess) and I don’t want that taken from me :P.

  4. J says:

I like some things broken – suppose I just want half a cookie or something, but sometimes I just want the whole thing. I think I like to be the one to break it, not have it pre-broken!

  5. bobbi says:

I am SO WITH YOU. It makes me mad when my food is broken. Not mad enough to not eat it, but irritated just the same 🙂

  6. Kiersten says:

I never really thought about it before, but yes I think it does, especially with chips. Chip crumbs are not nearly as satisfying as whole chips. However somethings I like better squished- I always squish peanut butter and jelly on purpose.

  7. Alyssa says:

Yayyyyyyyyyy! I’m so excited for my ball!
It makes me mad when my food is broken especially things like bars and crackers.

  8. Christina says:

I don’t mind if my chocolate is broken in large chunks, but when it’s broken into little crumbs that are hard to eat, it is really, really sad. 🙁

  9. I would be sad if my chocolate bar was broken but it certainly wouldn’t slow me down from eating it. Yum yum.

  10. Beth says:

Congrats to Alyssa–enjoy your massage balls! I am totally with you on the broken vs. unbroken food. If people liked broken food, why would Pringles exist? 🙂

  11. EmilyJ says:

I agree!! I do not like my food to be all broken up. I still do consume said food, but get irritated. Apparently so much so that its rubbing off on my children. While picking up Addie from preschool, her teacher informed me that she threw a bit of a tantrum when the granola bar she brought for snack was all broken… Oops!

    • kilax says:

Ha! See! I can remember acting that way when I was a kid so I was wondering if anyone else still has that issue… ha ha.

  12. I think I’m a bit OCD because if I get a nestle crunch bar or hershey’s almond bar i want to be able to click it in the right spot…same as a kit kat bar…and wow that’s the same analness as eating a half melted peanut butter cup…

  13. Kim says:

No, I totally understand! Especially with chocolate (but also cookies). And if it’s icing PLEASE don’t let it hit the side of the box and get smushed!

  14. diane says:

I guess it depends on the food. I hate when crunchy things are smashed. But things like chocolate or candy I’m MUCH more upset if it’s melted than if it’s broken!

  15. Maggie says:

I’m with you on the chips, usually because I use them for dipping into things, like salsa or guac or something.

  16. Lisa in IL says:

my husband calls me a super freak in the check out line. cold things with cold things, produce with produce, cleaning things with cleaning things and so on. and anything I consider fragile goes at the end; tortilla chips, eggs, bananas & bread. I have been known to pack them separately myself & bring them home on the front seat. So broken chocolate I can completely understand.

    • kilax says:

That is EXACTLY how we lay out our checkout line too. And why I love to shop at Aldi becuase I get to bag my own groceries!

  17. Kandi says:

I’m pretty easy going so as long as I could still eat it easily (completely smashed chips or crackers would be difficult to eat), I’m ok with it.

  18. Mica says:

I totally understand the chips thing, but I like to break my bars into pieces and then eat them. I didn’t even realize this until someone pointed it out to me. Neuroses!

  19. Erin says:

Interesting! I’ve never thought about it other than with chips. I hate when they get all crumbly at the bottom of the bag. Of course, then I just dump them on a salad in the case of tortilla chips but I still prefer them to be larger and whole.

I used to have this weird thing where I don’t like it if food isn’t in the package it originally came in or a Tupperware. Like, if the cereal bag sprung a leak and my mom would dump it into a large Ziploc bag I wouldn’t want to eat it. I’m still kind of over it, but not really.

    • kilax says:

I can understand that. If I take something random and put it in a container in my pantry, I am less likely to eat it. Unless it’s cookies.

  20. jan says:

Huh, I never thought about this. I don’t think I’d mind for a chocolate bar, but something crumbly like a muffin would be annoying.

  21. Michele says:

I totally agree with you! I do the same thing with the chips! And I don’t like eating things that are broken, and I break them, but I want to be the one to break them!!!

  22. Losing Lindy says:

it wouldn’t matter to me, because I would break it. 🙂

  23. Michelle says:

I get quite miffed when my bag of chips is all crumbs…maybe that is a sign I need to give up chips? LOL

  24. NOPE!
I wanted to lick my computer screen before I saw the question. I love me some chocolate. The more little broken pieces the better!

  25. As surprising as this sounds to me, nothing makes me happier with chocolate than when I get the perfect square break off my bar. 🙂

I also pick through my chips and eat all the broken pieces first and then eat the big ones last.

    OCD problems…

  26. Maybe this is why I like the small pieces of chocolate (that come that way, like chocolate chips or Rolo’s)!

  27. martymankins says:

It depends on what type of food it is that’s broken. Chocolate bars like a nice dark chocolate bar, I prefer to have it intact.

The ultimate food that I hate being broken is a Pop Tart. Both before I put one in the toaster and when I take it out. It’s bad enough taking it out while it’s hot and trying not to burn my fingers, then to have it break while pulling it out of the toaster. Epic fail!
