Not a music buff

Isn’t it funny how you can hear a song (or even part of it!) once and think “OMG! I have to download it RIGHT NOW!!!!”?

[“Same Love,”* “Blurred Lines“]

130605tunes

Or how you hear a song and at first you don’t care for it, but then you hear it so much it grows on you and OMG YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD IT?

[“#Beautiful”**]

Or… how you hear a song once and NEVER like it and have to change the station whenever it comes on? Heh heh heh.

[“Payphone,” ANY Avril Lavigne song]

Funny enough, one of the things I was most nervous about in regards to teaching strength class was the playlist. Tunes can really make or break a workout. And I wanted my playlist to be in the “make” category. Ha ha.

But there is a problem in that I am not a big music buff. I stick to Top 40s, Classic Rock, and a mix of 60s-80s music. At first I tried mixing these genres together for my class playlists.  But as I have become more comfortable with it, I’ve branched out a bit and done more “themed” playlists. I talked to my brother-in-law about some alternative tunes and made an alternative playlist. My sister recommended I download a new song from The Great Gatsby film and that lead me to find a lot of other new music and a new playlist.

Basically, I spend all the money I make on new tunes to teach class.

Just kidding.

Anyway. Downloading all these new tunes has made music fun again. I hadn’t been keeping music on my phone until I started teaching class in March, but now that it’s on there, I am more apt to play it when I am walking somewhere or when I am in the car. And it puts me in a good mood.

What song are you playing over and over again right now?

*If I was eloquent and could put my thoughts together, I would write about how much meaning that song has.
**What’s up with songs putting the number sign in front of the title?! There is a Justin Bieber song that does this too.***
***I understand what hashtags and Twitter are. I am not an idiot. I just don’t understand why you would want a song to have one in front of it.

I just listen to Pandora when I’m running. Every now and then I’ll put on an 80’s or 90’s station, and I’m usually laughing so much at whatever cheesy song is on, it keeps me moving. I got that from one of the trainers at my gym, who is constantly playing fun-bad music from the last 20 years, so I tend to spend a lot of class making fun of it.

Katy uses podcasts from different DJs when she teaches/trains – have you thought about something like that?

I should try Pandora when I am at home (on wifi) to see if I like it! 🙂 Maybe I will get some good song ideas 🙂

I haven’t! That is a good idea! Where does she get the lists?

I love it! My station totally gets me 🙂 Most of the time….

Hmm, I’ll have to check with her on what she uses. If you go into the podcast section of the iTunes store, maybe you can poke around and see what might work for you?

I used to be really into music and would keep up with my favorite bands. As I’ve gotten older I’ve lost touch with the music world a bit though. Before we went on vacation I downloaded some new music for the first time in a long time and I’ve been loving it. I totally hear you on loving some songs immediately, taking time for a song to grow on me, and never liking a song (totally agree about payphone).
I would guess artists are putting # in front of their song names so they are already hashtags and will trend on twitter but I don’t really know. Sounds logical to me.

MY playlist is almost exclusively 90’s boybands. AKA BSB.

And Avril of course. LOVE her.

  4. I love any of the top pop hits…makes me want to break into dance mid-run. But I don’t–that would scare people. I’m sure of it! J-Lo, Usher, Maroon 5 and others like them keep me going!

  5. I listen to NPR in the car and so I rarely hear new music. Mark will tell me that Miles sang X song in the car, and I have no idea what it is. A 2-year-old is trumping me in the cool catalog. I do like the “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Oh, shit. That’s the song on your iPod. I’m dumb.

I am so lucky that all the music is selected for BODYPUMP. I struggled so much with coming up with a playlist for my defunct circuit class. From my Piloxing training, I learned that a good playlist for group fitness is all about BPM. I forget the range they recommended and I don’t have my stuff with me. You should check out MuscleMixes.com and Powermusic.com, which offer downloads specifically for group fitness.

It’s so cute when little kids know the lyrics to a song! My nephew was singing Taylor Swift to me last fall 🙂

I am showing “Same Love” on my iPhone 😉

Thanks for the links! Did you see that one I sent you (on FB) where you could search by bpm range? These must be the same. Just what I need!

The number sign is a “hashtag” on Twitter. I think bands are doing it because hashtags are becoming such a part of the lexicon. So, the name of that song is actually “Hashtag: Beautiful.”

And there’s your pop culture lecture for the day.

ANYWAY, I’m so rarely in the car these days that I don’t really listen to the radio. If it wasn’t for the Today’s Hits Radio station on Pandora I’d have no idea what the new songs were. Actually, I really like Pandora for hearing songs I never would have found otherwise. Creating a station based on a song or a band is a great way to hear new music!

P.S. the Daft Punk station on Pandora is my new favorite.

  7. Xaarlin says:

Since I don’t listen to the radio at all, I am way behind on the top 40 hits of today. But.. I do listen to pandora and put in some of my favorite artists and when I hear a new song I like, I write it down and download it. I usually do this every 3-4 months to spice up my running playlist. I’ll play certain songs over and over- like in the Soldier field 10 race, I must have played “scream and shout” by will.i.am 4 times in a row. 🙂

  8. Kim says:

I tend to listen to NPR in the car, so I’m kind of behind on new music. But lately I’ve been stuck on “Momma’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert – it’s a great running song.

  9. The music on my iphone is specifically for working out, and so it’s all pretty shameful. My boyfriend keeps telling me we can listen to my music when we’re in the car, but I don’t think he’s ready for that yet. It’s basically anything bouncy and fun, so lots of 90’s, Katy Perry, the soundtrack from Grease. You know, quality music. 🙂

    • kilax says:

      Grease! YESSSSSSS!!!

So, would it be inappropriate for me to do an all Grease songs workout? I think it would be fun 😉

(I keep coming back here hoping to get new songs!)

Lately i could listen to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” over and over. Usually Jenna rolls her eyes at me when I say “I LOVE THIS SONG!” and I get “Mooooooom (it has 8 syllables you know) that song is SO OLD”

    Like ME, kiddo, like me.

  11. lauren says:

Lately I’ve wondered if fitness instructors ever use a paid Spotify account for $10 a month rather than downloading songs for playlists?

  12. Michele says:

My get pumped song right now is “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

It’s my go to when I start the rowing machine. I don’t run or bike with music, so this is the only time I can listen to it unless I have it hooked up in the car!

  13. Melissa says:

I absolutely LOVE Pandora. When I run or workout with music I put it on my “Pitbull” station and I almost never skip a song (it took a couple of “listens” to customize/like/dislike things but so easy and so worth it) That being said, I have a ton of other Pandora stations too and they are all at various levels of customization but generally make me happy (and it’s free!)

  14. Sizzle says:

I get a lot of inspiration from the songs played at my dance class. I don’t really like listening to the radio (I hate commercials). At work I listen to Pandora and I find new musicians that way. Lately I’ve liked the following songs enough to buy them:

    Sara Bareilles, Brave
    Daft Punk, Get Lucky
P!nk & FUN, Just Give Me A Reason

Love that you’re listening to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Seattle, REPRESENT!

I recently discovered Lana del Rey and have been listening to her on repeat.
