All I needed was goggles!

Hee hee.

My multisport club, Essential Fitness, is sponsoring me* and two other members (Chris and Judy) to do the Iron Girl Triathlon relay in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin on August 11th. The event includes a .5 mile swim, 12 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. I am the runner, but wanted to get some swims in with Chris, our swimmer! Note: I have not swam** laps since junior high.

So I met Chris last night at a local open lap swim and asked if she had a pair of goggles I could borrow. What a sweetie – she bought me my OWN pair! Thanks, Chris!

And wow, what a difference it makes when you can see the water! I am used to “swimming” in the Mississippi River, and don’t remember having goggles when I swam years ago*** – seeing where you are going sure makes it easier!****

Swimming was fun – for the 5 laps we got in before the pool was closed due to lightening. UGH!

But I remembered how to do a flip turn and felt comfortable with the strokes we did. It would be fun to have a few refresher lessons.

Gah. What am I talking about?! Why am I itchin’ to get back to the pool and see what I can do?! I suppose since I didn’t swim to exhaustion (but did feel my heart rate go up), I found it enjoyable?! Or was it the fact that it hit 100° yesterday and the water just felt so nice?! Hee hee hee.

Anyway. I have been saving money for a road bike… add a few swim lessons and I could try a triathlon someday? Maybe. Ha ha. Jumping a bit ahead here (<— this is what happens when I get overly excited about something).

I am SO happy I wrote about my math issues yesterday. I forgot Riyanti is a math whiz! I went over to her place yesterday and she showed me a ton of awesome tricks to help me with the math problems. She was so good about picking up at my math style and understanding what was going through my head, and showing me how to work with that. She is such a great tutor. I left feeling excited, wanting to write myself practice questions just to use my new skillz.***** She made math fun. Crazy. I owe her big time!

And! Bonus of going to her place! She sells headbands now, and her girls are selling earrings, so I got to pick up a pair!!!

*Actually, sponsoring two teams! AND! There is a blogger team too – Loop Looks, Ready. Set. Feast!, and The Style Files!
**So confused.
***Although I probably did.
****I realize this is not the case in open water swimming, save for clear water.
*****I think a lot of the stuff she taught me I had learned back in grade school. But I just didn’t remember it at all, until she was showing me. She made it so clear. Really, a wonderful teacher.

Goggles definitely made me feel like a swimmer 🙂 Do you have the cap too? That’s what helps me fit in with all the old ladies at my midday lap swim. But I could definitely use some refresher lessons too! Is Chris offering?

    And yay, Math IS fun!

YAY for swimming!!! I am excited you are ready to get back in the pool!! Goggles do make a huge difference!!!
    =^..^=

You’ve never done a triathlon before? That seems surprising to me…I bet you’d be a natural!

First thing I thought of reading this post!

this post makes me happy – I so love that you are feeling better about math! and I’d LOVE to see you do a tri some day!

also, I am totes buying that orange headband so we can be twins 🙂

  7. Huzzah for Ryanti! I am doing those ACE problems in my head/on paper but I know I’m doing them ass backward.

Even I have goggles – and a cap! I can’t do a flip turn and don’t really know how to swim properly, which could be a problem since 2014 will include no marathons but a triathlon. (What? What!)

Are you at least figuring them out? I wasn’t even getting that far!

That is awesome you are going to do a tri next year! Near you?

  8. Kristina says:

Swim goggles, saving for a road bike… I definitely see a triathlon in your future!!

  9. Swimming isn’t something I crave to do but I always feel better while/after I do it. I consider it my form of yoga for that reason :).

You should definitely look into doing a full triathlon. I bet you’d enjoy it!

    • kilax says:

Do you have any plans to incorporate swimming this training cycle? Or maybe you have and I Have over looked it!

      I think I would too 😀

I miss swimming. When I went to Bally’s Gym some 13 years ago (they closed down all Utah locations 4 yrs ago), I used to love to swim laps. I did 20 laps each visit (3 times a week). I was in really great shape then. The gym I belong to now (Planet Fitness) doesn’t have a pool. But it’s also $200/yr cheaper. But I would like to get back into swimming again, most likely starting out with much less than 20 laps at a time.

    • kilax says:

Hmm, are there any pools that have summer lap hours you could check out? 🙂

      • martymankins says:

There are, but you have to join for a minimum of 3 months at $30/mo. That’s a lot just to go swimming. I am looking more to find a friend that has a pool at this point. :-/

Swimming is fun but I struggle to regulate my breathing in the pool. I’m sure if I got more practice I’d get better at it though. I learned to flip turn in college but never have the ability to do it and still catch my breath when I resurface!

I really want private swim lessons but they’re just so much $$! Also, I don’t currently have access to a pool so that’s a problem. But I want to do a full triathlon some day so that means figuring how to swim more than just one length of the pool. Sounds like swimming comes a bit naturally to you!

  13. You look the part, that’s all that matters! I loved the Iron Girl, I think you’ll have a great time.

  14. Mica says:

That’s so nice of your friend to give you a pair of goggles. I imagine they do make swimming a LOT easier. Though I guess with goggles, you get those cool rings around your eyes now….

  15. Michele says:

Swimming is fun, and hard! I did it when I had a stress fracture in 2010, I credit not losing my running ability to swimming! It was the only sport my sports ortho doc would let me do, so I did it 3-4 times a week!!

You can do the flip thing? I’m jealous! After all that swimming I did, I could never master “the flip”!!

    • kilax says:

Oh gosh! Do you still get it in at all now, or are you sick of it?

For some reason, I can do the flip! Of course, that doesn’t help in a tri anyway. LOL.
