I may never grow up

How many of your childhood toys or books do you have in your home?

Surprisingly, I have a few. Okay, not surprisingly… we don’t have a basement, which is where I imagine I would put that stuff, so not much of it is here. I really only have my box of Polly Pockets and Smooshies,

a set of Star Wars books,

and scary Yoda.

A lot of the toys I have around the house were gifted to me as an adult! Ha! My love for toys may never die. And I look forward to the day when I get a chance to look through all my Barbies and Star Wars toys from youth (no, Dad, this is not a hint that I want them, now). Whether I keep them, or donate or sell them… I think it would be a fun walk down memory lane.

I was thinking about this because I was home this weekend and trying so hard to remember a book I read as a kid so my dad could grab it for me. But it was such an obscure book, I just can’t think of the title! It was about a brother and a sister who find some orb / crystal ball and take it to their summer home. They find out the orb has magical powers, so they make little clay people and use the orb to have them come to life (I think?). Then it turns out the power is evil and they have to save the day at the end of the book. Or something. I am so surprised (sarcasm) that what little I remember from the book is NOT helping me find it online. Ha ha. Or helping my dad find it at home. “Um, I think it’s a little fat book, with two kids with an orb on the cover?” <— so helpful.

But the book keeps popping in to my mind, and I am interested in reading it and see if I still enjoy it as much now, as I did then. I remember reading it over and over and over. Maybe it would give me a clue as to another genre of books I would like as an adult.

And since I am talking about books I read as a child… did you hear they are making The Giver in to a movie? With Jeff Bridges as The Giver? In fact, the casting looks really good.  I do have a copy of that at home, so maybe I should read it while I continue to try to figure out what the heck that other book is!

WTF! That Yoda is staring into my soul with its dead eyes! Make it stop!

We used to have smooshies, but I never would have remembered if I hadn’t seen your picture. Those were so cool. We had lots of My Little Ponies and Barbies and Beanie Babies. My parents still has most of those at their house and I think they are more attached to them than I am! haha.

That book doesn’t sound familiar to me – good luck finiding it!

The worst thing is that he talks all creepy! I am going to put him the guest bedroom when you come buah ha ha.

LOL! That is funny that your parents like the toys! Weren’t smooshies da bomb?!

      Thanks!

  3. I had the sweetest Polly Pocket as a kid. It was the size of a dinner plate and heart shaped. It required batteries because it lights up and it’s princess themed.

And I still own it 🙂

When I got married, all I took with me were some of my favorite childhood books, my kid rocking chair that has been in the family for 3 generations and of course- my American girl dolls! My parents still have a few of my things (probably for nostalgia or future grandkids), but I think my Polly Pockets are long gone. LOVED those! ALso loved the Littlest Pet Shop too- it was the bomb!

Which American Girl dolls did you have? I only had the books but LOVED them. My snister stole all my My Littlest Pet Shop stuff. Ha!

  5. I have my Rainbow Brite unicorn in our office. It is so rad but I don’t dare leave it out because Miles CANNOT TOUCH IT. Or I will scream. I also remember being very traumatized when my mom gave away my Cabbage Patch doll. So much so that when the old ones were reissued for the 25th anniversary that she bought me one. I saved it, still in the box, in the event I had a girl. And then I had Miles. So it, too, is hiding.

I’m also very pumped about “The Giver” movie. I’ve re-read it several times as an adult and love it more each time. BTW, it’s a trilogy. I’ve read the books and they are so good!

OOOOO! I think my Grandma has one of those. I hope she didn’t get rid of it. Oh man. How could she give that away?! LOL.

I had forgotten it was a trilogy! I think I found that out when I bought a copy for my cousin years ago but never read the second too! Thanks for reminding me!!!!

I’m pretty sure some of those Polly Pockets are mine… -.- JK! But seriously… I want those. 🙁 I loved Polly Pockets they were my favetown.

I don’t really have anything from my childhood. My parents cleaned out the house a couple years after I moved out and sold/gave away most of our toys and stuff. I think all that’s left are some of my favorite stuffed animals (I loved those more than any other toys), but I haven’t brought them out because a couple dogs I know would probably destroy them. Which would be heartbreaking. The one exception is a giant stuffed monkey that my brother got me when I was having a rough time in high school. That monkey has moved all over Chicago with me 🙂

I don’t suppose the book was called “The Magic Orb” or something easy like that?

Many of my childhood toys are in my parents’ basement as they became the toys my nieces and nephews played with. Though, as my nieces and nephews get older my mom has been talking about getting rid of the toys. I have lots of good memories but no room to store any of that stuff (nor any use for it) so I told her it was okay to move on. But I will always have Snowy. He’s my favorite childhood toy and I still have him 🙂

    • kilax says:

Unfortunately, no! I just can’t seem to find it. Maybe I will remember more as time goes on… uhhh… probably not 😉

      Snowy? Have I seen Snowy?!

I don’t have any of my childhood toys! I know my mom has a couple of my dolls in her cedar chest at their house. I came across them once. I had two that I wagged around with me EVERYWHERE. One red-headed Cabbage Patch Kid named Kara and one little generic doll… It was kind of Raggedy Ann style, but it had a blue dress and blue shoes and blue hair. Her name was–wait for it–Blue Baby. LOL Yes, I was as creative as a child as I am now. I’m sure if Kara hadn’t come with a name already given, she would have had a name equally as awesome.

I had *all* my childhood toys and books until a couple years ago when some events lead to me loosing nearly all of my worldly possessions down to a few suitcases and a half dozen boxes of boxs, but nothing from my childhood. It’s hard because I dreamed of reading those books to my future children and getting out my Barbies at the appropriate age. I’m slowly recreating my childhood library and, trust me, there are toys in my house of the geek variety.

  11. Meghan says:

Argh! I wish I still had my toys! I think we donated them? Anyway, I would LOVE to give some of those to Layla when she’s a bit older. We had some amazing toys at our disposal growing up. Remember Light Bright? I LOVED THAT!

  12. Losing Lindy says:

I have so many little people playsets, thinking V would play with them..so much money sitting and gathering dust

  13. Sad but I don’t have any childhood stuff with me. Boo.

  14. chezjulie says:

My mom still lives in the house I grew up in, so the stuff that got kept (books, toys) is all over there. Now you have me curious about what is still there!

  15. Bean says:

Polly pockets! Loved those. My parents have gifted me with all that stuff. Funny how when you move as much as we do the things you thought were necessary are suddenly not so necessary but I do have a box full of some of my favorite stuffed animals. Every time we move my husband is like ‘do we really need these’. Hell yes we do;).

  16. Mica says:

I have my childhood teddy bear here, but my mom’s dog chewed his face off while I was at college (so he’s with me, safe and sound). I found a service online where you can mail your mangled bear and they’ll fix it, but it’s such a silly thing to pay money for. Then again, I feel so bad that my bear has no face. Ugh, childhood dilemma!

I had forgotten that they’re making “The Giver” into a movie. Who is this cute young boy playing Jonas? I imagined him as younger; it looks like they’re trying to make it dystopian YAF. I guess it was the original dystopian YAF, ha.

Did you figure out the name of the book??
