Do you let things “grow on you”?

Ha ha. Um, figuratively. Not literally!

Have you ever noticed that you don’t like a song the first time you hear it, but the more you hear it, and the more familiar it becomes… you may start to like it? Then you can’t get it out of your head, and you have to download it and listen to it on repeat over and over and over… and do a little dance with your cat to the song and take a picture and send it to your friends?

This happens to everyone, right? Well, at least the first part of that paragraph? Maybe not so much the acting like a fool and documenting it and sending it out…

I am actually not thinking about music I hear on the radio, but rather, the music I browse through online when searching for tunes for the strength class I teach. I get emails from runhundred, as well as look on fitness websites and browse iTunes top download lists.  I must have been clicking on songs to sample that I had previously heard and didn’t want to download, because something was so familiar about them… I was like, “Oh! Do I like this song? Should I download it?!” Then, “No! You played that before and didn’t like it! It’s just familiar!” Ha ha. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up downloading those songs down the road. Sometimes, it just takes awhile for things to grow on you.

Which made me think. It was only that I couldn’t remember the name of the song I disliked that I was clicking on it and inadvertently giving it a second chance. And then it tricked me by sounding familiar. Ha ha.

But I wonder if I am the type of person to try something more than once, if I don’t like it. To give it the opportunity to grow on me. For example… I tried a Spartan Race and found out it wasn’t my thing. Same thing with Ragnar. I doubt I will do those again (you never know, though!).

Yet, some things, I have tried to get used to doing. Like, going to the shooting range. Shooting a gun doesn’t come naturally to me. And I don’t naturally enjoy it. But I am trying to learn how to do it, and trying to find a way to have fun with it.

So… maybe I am “one and done” for somethings and not others? Hey, at least I try new stuff!

Do you let things “grow on you” and purposefully give them a second chance? Or do you tend to make a decision after one experience?

Songs “growing on you” is what the entire theory of Top 40 (now called CHR) radio was based on. When I worked in radio we listened to songs a minimum of 5-10 times before deciding on whether to add them or not. It seems like big business is doing the same thing when marketing music downloads too!

I’m of the opinion that things should be re-tried once in a while, even if it’s just to make sure I don’t like it. Our tastes can change over time. 😉

Oh, interesting! Ha ha ha, so top 40 stations play the same things over and over so we’ll get used to them?

      • Pete says:

Yup. Radio stations get paid to drill it into your psyche until you run out and buy it (or stay in and download it)! 😉

  2. Umm … I let you grow on me.

    Ha!

For me, I think certain shows have grown on me. I wasn’t into “The Walking Dead” at all and then I finished ACE studying and marathon training and … BOOM! I love zombies.

Life is too short to force yourself to do things you don’t enjoy. Although I’m sure I’ve let things grow on me, but nothing is coming to mind, other than certain pop songs. What about the opposite though … things that aren’t so bad at first but then you HATE? (Like certain co-workers, haha … luckily none at my current job.)

Ha ha. Well, I was thinking of something similar – how I usually follow my gut when I meet people, and I met someone I really did not like and tried to let them “grow on me,” and… nope! 😉

I find that often songs that I hated during the 80s and thought were annoying vapid pieces of pop music now hold a lot of charm when I hear them unexpectedly. I’m not sick of them from overexposure any longer, and they bring back memories and associations even if I didn’t like them. Example: heard Madonna’s “Borderline” coming out of someone’s car window recently.

  5. I will try almost anything once, and in general I do believe in trying something twice if I feel like there’s good reason (e.g. off-nights, not getting the “typical” experience, etc.) But if I absolutely hate something the first time, it is definitely difficult for me to get on board with trying it again. When it comes to music, I’ve had many times where I randomly heard something and thought, “Wow, that’s catchy!” Thank goodness for the Shazam app to help me identify the artist and song name during those fleeting moments of discovery. =D

Oh yes. Why do you think I run? I sure didn’t like it at first! 🙂

  7. Michelle says:

I try most things once…even twice…but if after the second go around I am still ‘not feeling it’ I usually let it go. Music usually catches my ear right away, or it doesn’t…lol

A couple songs have grown on me over time. But then some songs I love one day and hate the next, especially on the run. Some days that get me groovin and some days I am like gross what is this. Other things that have grown on me over time…running, yoga, pilates. When I started them I was not a huge fan and now…..well now it is just out of control;).

    • kilax says:

I would love for yoga to grow on me! That is something I have tried over and over for years and I am still like… meh!

Songs generally grow on me, If I hear something good on pandora I make a list and then if I hear it a few more times I usually download it later.

When you mention spartan and RR, I think of my experience with muddy buddy and how It was a one and done for me. Although after 4 years, I have started thinking, “well maybe it would be better on a flat course?” So it’s grown like a millimeter on me. Haha but usually I’ll try something or listen to something once and then decide if it’s good or not. (Unless I know I’d hate it like spartan or mud/foam/color kitschy races<—- went for low hanging fruit with a running analogy) People on the other hand… My initial instinct for them is what drives me. 🙂

The main things I can think of as examples are food related. Some of the things I disliked the most growing up are now favorites – mushrooms, olives, tomatoes. Some things I still don’t like but I try them from time to time just to see if that’s still true. Whenever I make a blanket statement about not liking something Joey always laughs and says it will be my favorite soon enough.

  11. Heather says:

I think this is true for people, too! First impressions aren’t always perfect – so after a little while you get to know someone for who they really are – and it’s love! 🙂

  12. Mica says:

Hahaha, I tend to write things off before trying them because I “know” (am very sure?) that I won’t like them, so I guess I am more likely a “one and done” person. You know what grew on me though (through sheer exposure)? Flo from the Progressive ads. Ha.

I guess I’d try foods a couple times instead of writing them off the first time (unless it was something really grossssssss).
