Side note: Each year, when the geese show up in the spring, I start asking Steven (in a whiny voice, ha ha), “When are we going to see the goslings?!” Each year, he tells me “not for at least a month.” This year the first time I asked him was in April, and he gave me the month answer. To which I said, “But I already waited a month to ask!” He was right though – the first time I saw them was today, in May!

  • humidity (and corresponding heavy breathing and slower miles)
  • runner with dog
  • considerate cyclist
  • two walkers
  • walker with dog who gave me a rude look and didn’t say good morning back (sarcastic sorry for being on the sidewalk)
  • morning bird who got the worm then dropped it when I startled him running by (sincere sorry)
  • heron
  • seagull
  • baby rabbit

I’ve been a lazy morning runner the last few weeks, but I made sure to get out of bed “early” today and get my run in before it hits the mid 80s here this afternoon. No gracias!

Anyone else work out this morning to beat the heat?

It would be nice to cycle outside this afternoon… if we don’t get those storms they’re predicting!

Oh! And good morning to “in yo face feed me right meow” cat!

  1. Oh those goslings are so adorable!! Too bad they have to grow up to be geese 😛

  2. Kelly E says:

There is a reason I prefer to run that hill in the dark!!! It is too much to look at in the light!

  3. Heather says:

I saw goslings on Monday! I was so excited.

I planned to get up early today to run. And then I shut off the alarm. Haha. Well, I’ll keep trying. It’s an adjustment.

    • kilax says:

Awwww! They are so fun to see! So cute and fuzzy!

You’ll get there! Early running does take some work to become routine. It has to become so routine that you move through the motions a bit before you’ve woken up enough to realize what you’re doing, ha!

      • Heather says:

You inspired me – or cajoled me – or something…but today I got out there and was done with my run by 6:40. When the alarm went off my husband just looked at me. It took me almost 30 seconds to realize why. “Oh, that alarm is for ME!”

  4. Kristina says:

Wow – what a beautiful run! That little Creepy Crawly dude looks as though he wandered a ways away from the sea!

  5. Christina says:

That creature is C R E E P Y!!!!!! Can’t imagine running into that little guy! Eep! 🙂 Those little baby goosie woosies are the cutest! 🙂 I hope when you guys visit in June we have little baby birdies in our nest out front for you to look at! 🙂

    • kilax says:

At least there was only one of him! Eeeek!

I hope so, too! 🙂 Although.. bald baby birds can be kind of fugly. In a cute way.

  6. Chaitali says:

So much wildlife on your run! Those baby geese are adorable, and I bet the baby bunny was too 🙂 Though what’s up with the walker with the rude look? Thankfully most people I come across are friendly but the occasional rude glance can really put a damper on things.

    • kilax says:

The little bunny was so adorable! Wish they weren’t so skittish. I’d like a longer look 🙂

I don’t know what his deal was. I saw him coming with his dog and got over and he did too and I smiled and said good morning and got a sneer. Hmm.

  7. Lesley says:

My mom had two “in your face” cats yesterday morning. Very much like Little Shop of Horrors. I love seeing the baby geese and ducks because they’re so fuzzy and cute! A few years ago, I was walking to my car after work and two adult geese were taking 10+ babies to the creek to swim.

    • kilax says:

      LOL!

Some of these geese had a TON of goslings! Then I saw two geese that had one and found myself feeling sad for them. For geese. LOL!

  8. Pete B says:

Yikes! Does Mr. Creepy Crawly live nearby or is that a picture from your trip to the Amazon?! Yes, I ran early and did not like feeling “forced” to get out there before it got hot. Winter/Spring weekend long runs that would start at a leisurely 8:30 (because the temps are comfortable all day), will now have to start at 6:30am. Womp! Is it fall yet? 🙂

    • kilax says:

LOL! He lives very close by. Weird, right? We have those on the trails out here sometimes 🙂

Sigh. So long are our days of late run starts. You know I could do a long rant about the heat. I am so happy someone else relates! I feel like a crab! (Now, if I was on the beach… it would be great!)

      • Pete B says:

Yes, heat and the beach go together. But since I’m rarely on the beach, I only need it to be hot about two days a year. I also want to be crabby, but I need to try and get adjusted to the temps and learn to run through whatever Mother Nature throws at me even when it is stifling temperatures and humidity! 🙂

  9. What gorgeous pictures! Especially the ones of all the little critters. It feels like summertime outside already this morning. Good for you for getting your workout done early to beat the heat!

Yay for considerate cyclists! Incidentally, I was on a Divvy bike this morning and some driver yelled at me for not using a bike lane (even though I was on a street that doesn’t even have one). So let’s give some applause for drivers when they are considerate, too, haha.

It was so great to see you yesterday!

    • kilax says:

It totally felt like summer! Which is nice when you aren’t running 🙂

Oh man. I am sorry you got yelled at. Did it make your HR jump?

It was so great to see you too! I was in such a good mood after. I am usually NOT on my face day (in office day). I should see you every day I go downtown 🙂

  10. Anne says:

So, is Mr. Creepy Crawly a baby lobster, or what? T and I stumbled (quite literally, I almost tripped and knocked him down because I was so grossed out) over a couple of those at Half Day a month or so ago. What are those???

    • kilax says:

He looks like it, right? I think it might be a type of crayfish. The LFCPD site lists that they’ve had quite a few of them documented in the preserves (apparently there are lots of variations). I am happy you didn’t fall on them! EWWW

  11. Tiina says:

    BABY GEESE!!!!!!!!

  12. Michelle says:

Great shots!! I love the baby geese!! They are so cute. What is that creepy crawly crab looking thing? I will be outside….after work…drenched in sweat for my run, LOL. Man I need to figure out how the heck to get up at O O O dark 30 for a run before work. ROFL!!!

    • kilax says:

      I think it’s a crayfish 🙂

Have a good run! And with how light it’s been in the am, maybe you won’t have to run in the dark if you do go before work! 🙂

  13. Love the photo dump! I need to do this one of these days–esp. now that I’m not training for anything. I actually could stop and take pictures of some of the interesting things I see. I did it a few months ago, and it was kind of fun!

    • kilax says:

You are a much more dedicated runner than me! I always seem to be willing to stop for a photo… except during a race, ha ha.

  14. Amy says:

Lovely! Although I can’t believe it’s that hot there already…

  15. Marcia says:

I have yet to see any goslings! Plenty of geese though…
The sun/moon have been amazing lately!

  16. Xaarlin says:

I want to run with you in the morning and see all the critters!!!

Were the geese parents hissing at you? I see their mouths open and looking at you in the photo… I know that posture because I got too close taking photos of goslings and they charged me. 🙂

    • kilax says:

Come over! 🙂 There are so many pretty preserves to run in here!

Oh yeah, totally hissing. And I wasn’t even that close. I don’t mean to scare them, but I am going to be running by anyway… might as well grab a pic. LOL!

  17. jan says:

Sooooo cute!! Baby anything is cute (almost anything). Those weird plants are May apples. They will get a really pretty flower underneath the leaves sometime in May.

The heat is getting to me…my friend and I ran at 3 yesterday and then I remembered that you can’t just run whenever you want when it’s warm!

    • kilax says:

Oh wow!!! I am going to watch for the flower! Thanks for the info!!! 🙂

Sigh, right? Time to start getting up early and actually paying attention to the weather forecast. Wah. Ha ha.

  18. Karen says:

I saw some gooslings this weekend 🙂 So cute! I like your path…I don’t love the bug…run quick.
It was humid and hot here this weekend I hibernated mostly. Love the sunrise pictures.

  19. Mica says:

    1. I recognize those hills! I’ve run on them with you! (I think…watch this be some totally different trail that I never ran.)
    2. Those goslings, ahh! I love baby ducks and geese!
    3. Where did you see that crawfish? (I think that’s what that is.) Are you squeamish about how he looks? I’m weirdly okay with crawfish but not at all okay with spiders and insects. Weird, right?

    • kilax says:

      Yes! You have!

Do you guys have the baby animals out by you, now?

I saw that crayfish at a forest preserve right by my house. I wasn’t squeamish. I thought he was funny. That is odd that you are okay with them though, and not other spiders and insects! Maybe it’s his scale?
