Not a cook

By , January 27, 2016 8:25 am

Cooking’s not for me. I don’t get any enjoyment out of it, and when I do cook, I feel frustrated that I scarf down the thing I made in a fraction of the time it took to make it (I’m such a fast eater – I need to work harder on slowing down). I clean up messes as I cook, but feel agitated when I sit down to eat because there are still multiple pots and pans that will have to be cleaned after eating. Ha ha. Then there’s the fact that I munch on food as I cook, and am not as hungry as I should be when I do eat. Sigh. Issues.

Luckily, Steven enjoys cooking, and I’m a good sous chef (and mediocre dish washer). So there ya go.

But the kitchen is not entirely lost on me! I do enjoy baking. I get much more enjoyment out of baking for someone else, than cooking for them. What’s up with that? Is it that I have a sweet tooth, and most of the things I bake are sweets (okay, ALL of them)? Or is it that when I bake for someone, it’s a treat, and I look forward to that person enjoying it as so, rather than some random meal (not that meals can’t be a treat, too). Eh, who knows.

I made cookies for my brother-in-law (for his birthday) last night and it was a much needed stress relief! Then I made dinner. Blah. Ha ha ha.

There seems to generally be a dividing line between people who like to cook and people who like to bake. Kind of like people who like to run and people who like yoga–sometimes you’ll see overlap, but it’s rare. Ha!
I like both but prefer cooking because you can improvise a little more. Getting creative with a baking recipe will likely end in disaster. :\
I need a sous chef! P is usually still on his way home from work when I am cooking. I made stew yesterday, and chopping the carrots, onions, garlic, and potatoes put me in a horrible mood. It’s so tedious. And I have yet to master onion chopping in a way that doesn’t make the onion fall apart in random pieces. *sigh*

Yeah, that is why I don’t care to cook – I don’t want to be creative with it 🙂

Oh man! You do need a sous chef! You should google how to french an onion – that makes it mostly stay together 🙂 However, that more like slivers and I imagine you needed chunks for the stew.

You probably do have better associations with baking than cooking which is why you enjoy it more! Also, do you think baking uses fewer dishes? 🙂

I’m the exact opposite of you. I’d much rather cook dinner than bake cookies. I feel like baking is messier and uses more dishes and requires paying more attention whereas cooking is more freeform.

I think the baking I does use less dishes than cooking 🙂 I must like the structure of it, cause I don’t want creativity or free form in the kitchen !:)

I love cooking AND baking! I love that baking is a simple project that I can easily complete from start to finish and pretty much always yields good results – that’s why it’s good stress relief for me. And cooking I love because you can play around with different flavors a lot more easily. I just love watching a meal come together.

I think it’s fun that you’re a sous chef for Steven! Now that Terry actually has time to cook, we usually split tasks up, which makes things go a lot more quickly.

    • kilax says:

That is awesome you like both and that they can both fulfill different needs for you! 🙂

Yes, I am happy to be the sous chef and contribute in some way to his hard work in the kitchen! 🙂

    Those cookies look amazing btw.

I don’t like baking- takes too long for the end result (is usually something I don’t want to eat- like sweets) or even baking dinner type stuff I’m not a fan of. But I love cooking stuff on the stove. It’s funny how different everyone is.

    • kilax says:

Thanks! They turned out hella soft and a bit undercooked. Oops. I made more that were more cooked. Ha.

Yes! Everyone is so different which is good – if we all liked one thing who would do the other for us?! HA!

I’d bake all day IF I wouldn’t eat all of it. I definitely prefer baking. If I didn’t cook though, we’d never eat. The Caveman doesn’t even know where the pots and pans are kept.

    • kilax says:

You have to have him take your baked stuff in to the office, ha ha! I made these cookies with eggs so I didn’t even try them!

Do you like being in charge of all the cooking?

  6. I’m kind of neutral about baking and maybe slightly more positive about cooking (because I can experiment more with it). Cleaning..now that I hate. I think I’m inherently lazy. I love a clean house but if I could pay someone else to do it I would…now that I think of it I would just hire a chef too :p

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! I think the people who say they like to clean might be lying just a bit 😉 I don’t think that makes you lazy!

I’d love to hire those out, too. I hate thinking about what to eat, most of the time. It’d be nice to have a chef choose for me.

I used to be the world’s slowest eater, and I was always the last person to finish my dinner. Now I also tend to scarf down what I cooked, but I do enjoy cooking.

  8. Chaitali says:

Yum, those cookies look great! And I’m the opposite. I love to cook but am not a fan of baking at all. With baking, I feel like I’m ties to the recipe whereas with cooking I feel like I can experiment.

  9. Michelle says:

HEHE, I’m just the opposite. Baking is such a science, and essential someone else’s creation, where as when I make up my own recipe, I get the satisfaction of creating something new! How about I cook dinner, and you bake desert? HEHE

  10. Mica says:

Are those cookies vegan? Do you prefer to bake vegan treats or do you bake non-vegan things equally?

I had a book about baking once, and it said that baking things people feels special because unlike food (like, meals), sweets are not necessary to survive, so they feel like a treat.

I also am working on slowing down my eating pace. My trick is to try to be the last one at the table to finish, and sometimes, it’s excruciating.

    • kilax says:

They aren’t! I made them with eggs so I wouldn’t eat them. Ha! I prefer to bake vegan 🙂

Ahh, yes! That is probably it! Thanks for the insight!

I don’t know how you do it! I am always the first! 🙁

  11. I like to do both, although I liked to cook and bake much more when I had more than a tiny kitchen to work in! Between the two, I definitely like baking more, but that’s probably because I’m better at it………and I have such a sweet tooth.

I definitely feel you on the “I cooked for an hour and ate in ten minutes” situation. It’s frustrating!

    • kilax says:

Oh yeah! Now I am remembering you shared some of your really cool baked stuff with us!!! Have you made anything lately?

It is! Blah! I need to slow down 🙂
