Random Thoughts Thursday 202

  • I finished Vox! I became less anxious after the main character’s wrist counter (that tracks her speech and zaps her if she says over 100 words for the day) came off so she could work on an anti-Wernicke’s aphasia serum for the president’s brother. (BUT SPOILER, the government’s intentions are more sinister!) The entire book was suspenseful and made me feel on edge while reading it. But I obviously liked it because I finished it!

  • Now I’m reading Little Fires Everywhere, which Amy recommended to me. It’s appropriate I’m starting it today, as I’m traveling to Cleveland, where the book is set!
  • This morning was my first time using TSA Pre✓. It went much quicker than regular security, even though they still had me take my jacket and shoes off. It was so nice to leave my laptop in my bag though. <— welcome to the 2010s, Kim, I know. Ha.
  • Today is an exciting day – it’s the day I start listening to Christmas music! Woo hoo! (But… I didn’t have time to load it on my phone this morning, so that will wait until tomorrow, sad face.)
  • Speaking of Christmas, I bought a few gifts last week!
  • Do people still share business cards at meetings? I always have to make sure I have some when I travel for work, or meet someone new. I haven’t received new business cards at work in YEARS. I don’t really use them – I use digital contacts. (Click through to take a poll)

Are business cards on their way out?

  • My sleep has been such SH!T lately. Gawd. I’ve realized this month that waking up at 3:50 am on Fridays is killing me when I have a weekend full of plans. And about half of each week, the cats wake me up in the middle of the night, or, yay, even better, thirty minutes before my alarm. I’m looking forward to the extra hour gained on Sunday. I won’t get to sleep in (see: cats) but I can take a nap!

Who, us?! We NEVER try to climb the back of the headboard during the night. NEVER.

  • I’m having my blog redesigned and love the look so far. I can’t wait to show you guys. Thanks to Shelley for recommending the designer!
  • I have a few more “randoms” to share, but maybe I can stretch those in to a full post, ha!

Glad pre check saved you some time! Weird that they still had you take your shoes off though. I haven’t even thought about Christmas gifts yet but I guess I should get to it!

    • kilax says:

Yeah, they did in CLE too. Maybe since I am wearing knee high boots?

I wasn’t thinking about it either, but a few things jumped out to me at TJMaxx! 🙂

Alright, I’ll have to give “Vox” a try! Your initial review of it made me pretty nervous about reading it. I’m really enjoying your book reviews; thanks for sharing them!

I do not have business cards, so I don’t share them. (I used to have some, but then I never gave them out. Then they were all outdated because the company changed offices.) Some people have personal ones here with just their name, email and website, but it’s more of a cutesy thing. I don’t think I’d ever remember to carry them!

    • kilax says:

I think you’d like how it ends up! And it would be fun to discuss! I’m glad you like my reviews <3

That is interesting that people have personal ones - I remember when bloggers did that! It's nice NOT to carry them, and just be like, "can I email you my info?" Or, just EMAIL you? Cause all my info is there, ha!

We had our first precheck experience this week – didn’t have to take off shoes, though. It was really nice to get right to the head of the line and breeze through!

So excited to see your new blog design!!!

I’ve been using TSA Pre for a few years now. Very nice when it’s available. The only down sides to it are smaller airports that don’t have dedicated TSA Pre lanes at security and major airports that close down their TSA Pre lanes during slower times. Otherwise, it’s nice to leave your shoes on and not have to take your laptop out of the bag.

I read Little Fires Everywhere. I really enjoyed it, even though there was a couple parts of the story that I wanted to go into more detail.

  5. Christina says:

I don’t think business cards are on their way out, but I also don’t think they’re fun or useful. 🙂

Glad you will get to nap! I forgot about daylight savings!

    • kilax says:

Ha! So did you vote “other”?! 🙂

I am so stoked for that nap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Christina says:

I did! I didn’t feel like any of the other responses were applicable to my thoughts. 😛

        • kilax says:

I am glad I put “other” up there!

This poll is not very popular, ha. Also, it keeps giving me the option to vote (even though I have once)!

Look at those little sh$ts ha ha! Starbuck with her legs crossed like ‘yeah what you gonna do about it’ lol.
The lack of sleep builds up thats for sure. I didn’t even realize how tired I’ve been until I randomly slept til after 11 today (normally I’m up and awake by 8am) because I’ve been ‘Chomping’ in my sleep for the last week.
Looking forward to seeing the new look for the blog!

    • kilax says:

      RIGHT?!!!??!?! Little prissy troublemaker!!!

Do you feel better after getting more sleep that day? A little? A little less sleep each day really catches up with us 🙂

Thanks! I am excited to see it too!

  7. Amy says:

Oh, you’re reading the book! I’m excited to hear what you think about it! My mom grew up near Shaker Heights (in Chardon OH) and we lived in Mentor when I was a kid, but I was never aware of the special history of Shaker Heights, so I found that aspect of the book really fascinating. And the story, too, of course! Safe travels!

    • kilax says:

So far I like it! It’s so detailed! And I feel like I can really picture the characters.

Oh cool – I will have to look in to the history of it more!

Thanks! I am back home safe now 🙂

  8. I bought one Christmas present in September on a whim (I was in a gift shop and saw something I know my dad will LOVE, so I had to get it), but I will admit that I’m already stressing out about what I’m going to get for everyone else on my list, haha. I used to wait until after Thanksgiving to even start thinking about what to get people, but I figure the earlier I start, the less pressure I’ll feel – or, if nothing else, at least I can shift that stress to earlier in the year 😛

At my old job, I used to get people’s business cards all the time when they’d send me samples. I found it really helpful towards the end of the year when I’d want to reach back out to them for gift guide ideas (because after awhile, all the PR people start to blend together). In my current job, though, the only time I’ve needed or used business cards was at the one conference I went to. Those were mostly just helpful for being able to prove to my boss that I networked while I was there, haha!

    • kilax says:

I am glad you found one thing already! Yay! I think starting early helps too. Another thing that helps on Steven’s side is that we make lists. We’re all old enough to buy what we want, so the lists help!

Ahh, that is a good use – ha, both of the ways you listed 😉

  9. Stephany says:

Little Fires Everywhere was such a lovely read. I read half of it while sitting in a rocking chair on a porch in Asheville, so I think that made me enjoy the book even more.

I haven’t even BEGUN to think of Christmas presents, argh. I love Christmas so much, but shopping for presents stresses me out so much.

    • kilax says:

I really like it so far! There’s so much detail and I feel like I absorb it more when I do a big reading like you did in Asheville (I was able to do some of that during my business travel and solo lunch).

It IS stressful! Do you have a lot of people to buy for?
