Random Thoughts Thursday 98

  • Ha, I started looking for the MBP bracelet while my snister was here and after she left. I had a feeling she left it here! I found it Tuesday am when I went to get dressed – she had attached it to the hanger of a new shirt I got when I was with her. Ha! Good one, snis, good one…

  • My second race of the year, the Wisconsin Half Marathon, is in two days! And today is my second (!!!) rest day/pre-race massage day! I put in miles, but didn’t train as hard as I could have, on the roads, or in the kitchen. Going for a PR or running “for run” will be a race day decision, depending on how I feel, and the weather. I’d rather have a solid race than go out too hard and die, as I have the last two years. I don’t want to end the spring racing season with that feeling. Again. But I’ll bring this pace band just in case. (Also, this race doesn’t have the best monthly timing for me, so there’s that.)
  • Christina did a lot of research and found a house for all of us (ten people!) to rent when we’re in Alaska! I really appreciate that she did all that hard work and coordinated everything. It looks like the place will have some great views:

  • It’s been so nice to use the new bathtub, but I seem to have lost my hot bath stamina – I can’t stay in there as long as I used to without getting dizzy/too hot. I’ll have to build it back up. Maybe I should write a training plan? Ha ha.

  • Really random thought: I never volunteered at a race last year! I need to make sure I do that this year!

  1. Good luck at Wisconsin this weekend! I won’t be there this time around, but I hope you have a great race 🙂

Thanks! Does it feel nuts not to be there? Or good? 😉 (or both?!)

      • Haha definitely a little bit of both…but mostly good because those are two LONGGGGGG days. And now I can go to the Cubs game on Sunday instead of spending the whole day recovering/catching up like I normally have to do. I did work packet pickup in the city this past weekend, though, so I didn’t get *completely* out of working haha.

I agree that going out too hard in a half is not a good plan. 13.1 miles is too long of a distance to try and win it in the first few miles. My half PR was set with a first mile at 7:05 pace and a final mile of 5:52 pace (with a steady increase in paces in-between). The time to “release the Kraken” is when I start grooving my pace. As for the headwind – I make sure I’m not fighting it too much and save my energy for the tailwind sections. Good luck!

Ooooh the view in Alaska looks AWESOME! I can’t wait to hear all about your trip (and then tell Terry we need to go there ASAP) later this summer! And how fun that you can all stay together!

Wait, second race? You mean I’ve run more races than you this year?! I’m so bummed about the forecast. I hope it’s not as bad as they’re saying (storms, wind, ugh) so we can all just have a good race already.

    • kilax says:

Thanks! I am looking forward to it! I hope you guys get to go there!

Yeah – I don’t plan to race very much this year 🙂 I bet the forecast will change again. On Monday it said sunny and 70s. Ewww.

I’m so bad at keeping track of your races, ack! I like your plan for a race-day decision on Saturday, and I hope it turns out to be an enjoyable experience for you.

Your Alaska trip plans sound amazing! Do you ever find that it’s hard to stay all together with a group of people in one house? It seems like you always have the right group of people for a good dynamic, so is that something you actively work on, or do you always prefer staying with other people?

    • kilax says:

No you aren’t! I don’t talk about them much (on purpose – they aren’t that important to me, usually) and this is my second of the year! My next one is a 5K in October 🙂 Thank you! I hope it does too! My shake-out run today was HOT (83!). I hope it’s better tomorrow. Ha.

I work on having the right people to stay with, if we are going to stay in a house. I know there are people where it wouldn’t work. It will be interesting to see how this works out in AK – we are mostly doing it to save money! It should be good though. It’s key to have people you can communicate with! I think the four of us would do well 🙂 It’s fun to be in a house with your friends!

Good luck in Wisconsin!!! When we were in the corral for the half in Illinois last weekend, we met a man who was going to run in Wisconsin this weekend – it will be his 93rd marathon! How many are you up to now?

    • kilax says:

Thank you! That is so cool! Was he older or no?

This is my 8th time running this half (I’ve run them all), and my 27th half. I’ve run 9 marathons!

  6. Kristina says:

Ooh, enjoy the massage! Even if it hurts (or especially if it hurts?) I hope that Sunday does bring you cool weather for the race and speedy legs, if you feel like it. Good luck and take a hot bath afterwards!
