Friday Question #144

By , January 14, 2011 6:32 am

If you could choose any one superpower to have, what would it be?

I would want to be able to read minds. Because I am nosy. And seriously, I often wonder “what the hell were you thinking?” (then I wouldn’t wonder that).

I am sure eventually I would get sick of it, because some people probably have some disturbing thoughts. So I guess I would have to be able to turn the super power on and off.

I realize that is a selfish power to pick, as in, it doesn’t do much to help the general population. I could have said, “the power to cure sickness” or something. Maybe you guys are less selfish than me?

  1. I’d want the power of invisibility!

  2. Amy says:

Interesting question…I think it would be cool to be able to fly!

Maybe you should read the Charlaine Harris “Sookie Stackhouse” books (the books the HBO show True Blood is based on). The main character, Sookie, has the ability to read minds. It’s pretty interesting.

Your question (and the first two comments!) reminds of me of the This American Life segment on the question of flight versus invisibility. You can listen to it here. It’s one of my favorites.

Personally, I would choose teleportation. I think I’d like traveling a lot more if it didn’t require, you know, actually traveling 🙂

Thanks for the book recommendations! They do sound like something I would like. I have never seen that show though. Have you?

I think I listened to that episode! Is that the one where everyone admits they would use their powers to do illegal or creepy things? (Steal, spy on people, etc.?)

  4. ChezJulie says:

I’m with Amy. Definitely the power to fly.

  5. Kandi says:

Definitely teleportation!! I’ve thought about this in the past.
I don’t think I’d want to know what other people are thinking. Some things are better left unknown.

  6. Ok. Just wanna say that your drawing was really funny.

And I’d wanna be able to read minds too.

  7. Teleporting. No question.

  8. Christina says:

I would prefer to be invisible. I would mirror the drawing you posted.

  9. Jen says:

I want the power to heal.

  10. Flying. Imagine? “Long weekend, I’ll just fly myself off to Rio and be back by Monday night!”

  11. Andrew Opala says:

sonic scream … that I could use to get attention when sales people avoid me when I’m in a rush

  12. Holly says:

Um, no….I am selfish, too. 🙂 I would choose that, but would HAVE to have the power to turn it off – I’m too sensitive and would probably end up with no friends at the end of the day!

Even though I really wouldn’t, I also think it’d be neat to time travel and change things (in the past) and see things in the future. But only good things, obviously. See, this is why I could never time travel – too indecisive.

  13. gina says:

    I want to be invisible!

  14. Invisibility vs ability to fly has always been the dilemma since I was a kid. Hmm. That’s a tough one. I guess invisibility would win out.

I’ve thought about this before. Lots of superpowers I’ve love to have. Xray vision, super human strength. Following in the same superhero Justice League genre here, I would love to be able to swim underwater and communicate with the animals of the ocean. As a kid growing up, I had an extreme fear of water and always thought with that kind of power, I could overcome my fear (I eventually did without needing the superpower)

Can you tell Aquaman is my favorite of the Justice League?

  16. Kristina says:

I always ask my students this question when we are practicing “if” clauses in Spanish (a very ‘complex’ construction). I know that this makes me sound totally PSYCHO, but I do think it would be cool to have radar vision and be able to see things and use the vision to melt things… I know, I know, totally crazy!

  17. Etta says:

The power to get lots of money from ATMs whenever I need it w/o having the funds in my checking account. I think that’s stealing, though.

  18. Depends. In this fictional world, are there villains with powers too? If so, my (first choice) of flying isn’t so useful if someone has heat vision or super strength.

Flying would be the way to go.

Teleportation would work too, but I’d want to “jump” to absorb my (kinetic?) energy. Why? So for fun I could teleport up into the clouds and free-fall (almost flying) and teleport to the ground without still moving and 200 MPH.

Umm, no, I haven’t really spent much time thinking of this at all…

  19. Kate says:

I want to be like Samantha from “Bewitched”! Nothing would make me happier than to wiggle my nose and be anywhere in the world I want to be.

  20. onelittletrigirl says:

I always wanted to be able to stop time. So that I could hold onto the moments that count but pass by too quickly.

I would also like to know that I am going to be happy in the future…I don’t necessarily want to know my future, I just want to know that everything I have gone through and am going through will really be okay.

    • Hmm… The future.

I don’t really want to know my future but I would like to know when I’m gonna die. Why, so I can plan my retirement better. If I’m going to die at sixty, why should I be saving on the chance that I live until 80; or if I’m living until 90, I better start saving more…

  21. Adam says:

X-ray vision? How could no one have already said xray vision??
