The results are in!

By , January 31, 2012 11:22 am

Below are the results of the blog survey I put out last week (I left it open for one week and it is now closed).

I had 28 respondents. I had 207 subscribers in Google Reader, so that is a 13% response rate. Pretty typical of a survey?

Do you like filling surveys out?

I actually do, and always fill them out at work, and most of the ones emailed to me (except for that stupid Runner’s World one about energy efficient cars).

Anyway. Here are the results to the mandatory questions.

Do you read ilaxSTUDIO through an rss feed aggregator or organically?

Well, since 9 respondents don’t use rss, that means my poll percentage rating just went down even more. Ha ha.

Which of the topics below do you find the most interesting for me to post on?

Running + Training   7 25%
Health + Fitness   21 75%
Recipes + Food   15 54%
Fashion + Beauty   11 39%
Blogging   12 43%
Life   8 29%
Memes   11 39%
Work + Design   10 36%

People may select more than one checkbox, so percentages may add up to more than 100%.

What is really interesting is that most people voted that they like Health + Fitness the most, which is the category I try to post in the least! I figure the blogosphere is so over saturated with health blogs – what more do I have to add?

Tell me, do you prefer for me to post my commentary on Health + Fitness related news, or do you want to hear about my personal health (weight loss, body image, etc.)?

I was surprised to see Recipes + Food in #2. I was not surprised to see Running + Training in last! That is not really interesting to anyone other than me.

Which of the topics below do you find the least interesting for me to post on?

Running + Training   1 4%
Health + Fitness   3 11%
Recipes + Food   7 25%
Fashion + Beauty   8 29%
Blogging   6 21%
Life   0 0%
Memes   7 25%
Work + Design   5 18%

People may select more than one checkbox, so percentages may add up to more than 100%.

Fashion + Beauty got the most votes, followed by Memes (no surprise – they are fun to fill out but boring to read/hard to comment on, case in point, the 11 Things Meme that is still making its rounds) and Recipes + Food. I was surprised Recipes + Food got a high rating followed by a low rating. I do think reading recipes is boring.

Which is more boring for you guys – the recipes, or talking about food products and restaurants?

I was surprised Running + Training did not get more votes here! I definitely agree that Memes can be boring to read, so I will continue to limit those.

Should I continue to ask the Friday Question?

Do you like having a weekly summary of my training posts, or would you prefer to see them more spread out (throughout the week)?

20 people said continue a weekly summary and 8 people said make them more spread out. I am not sure if I will do a post for each workout – I am not that creative of a writer. But maybe I will mention my workouts more.

Should I continue to do giveaways?

How do you feel about the amount of photos on the blog?

How often do you like me to post?

One a day got 17 votes, more than once a day, 3, and a few times a week 8. So almost 30% of you think I am posting too often? I have a feeling it will slow down soon, as a result of my work-related stress. Ironically, this is my second post of the day…

Do you care what time of day I post?

2 people preferred morning, everyone else didn’t care. I will continue to post when I get up for work (between 4:00 am and 4:30) everyday if I can.

As for the non-required, form comments, I did get a few answers there too!

What topics would you like me to write about more (include anything I don’t write about now that you would like me to write about in the future)?

  • My history. Running.
  • Posts like the one about how people present themselves on the internet
  • All the movies I watch, including a movie rating system.
  • Why I became vegan, what I eat to fill the “protein void.” (quotes mine, not theirs, ha ha)
  • How Steven and I met, favorite places in Chicago.
  • More Data.
I thought the movie rating system idea was intersting. I do watch a lot of movies.

Would you guys be interested in reading about my opinion on movies? Be honest!

Which topics would you like me to write about less?

  • Food
  • Running/Training/Health/Fashion
  • Running

Most people who responded had a disclaimer that said they just skip the posts they are not interested in. I do that too. So no worries.

Any other thoughts you’d like to share?

This section was filled with blog love and compliments. Thanks, you guys!!!

After reading all of these results, I kind of wish I would have asked about blog post length. Do super long blog posts (like this one, ha ha) turn you off? Do you read them all? They sure turn me off!

Alright, here is a summary of all my follow-up questions for you guys. Thanks for participating!!!

  1. Do you like filling surveys out?
  2. Tell me, do you prefer for me to post my commentary on Health + Fitness related news, or do you want to hear about my personal health (weight loss, body image, etc.)?
  3. Which is more boring for you guys – the recipes, or talking about food products and restaurants?
  4. Would you guys be interested in reading about my opinion on movies? Be honest!
  5. Do super long blog posts turn you off? Do you read them all?

I’m just thinking you should write about whatever you feel passionate about. And if that changes on a daily basis that is OK because things that interest me change as well. Even if you are writing about a topic that doesn’t interest me, your personality and humor often comes through and is entertaining in itself. And seriously, you are posting that early in the morning?!?!?! I am now doubly impressed!

    • Christina says:

I agree!! This blog is about you Kim! 🙂

    • kilax says:

Thanks for your compliment 🙂 And my interests have changed SO much since I have started this blog. It’s crazy!

Yeah. Early mornings for me! Today I was up at 4:00 and am getting pretty tired!

  2. Losing Lindy says:

Interesting results..btw I was one that said I like them in the morning, I like looking forward to what you have to say as I drink my coffee in the morning.

  3. Christina says:

1.Do you like filling surveys out? – Yes, if they are relevant to my interests. (And if they’re about my hot sister.)
2.Tell me, do you prefer for me to post my commentary on Health + Fitness related news, or do you want to hear about my personal health (weight loss, body image, etc.)? – I think both, post as much as you are comfortable with regarding yourself.
3.Which is more boring for you guys – the recipes, or talking about food products and restaurants? – Recipes, but that’s just because I don’t cook and you eat weird stuff. <3
4.Would you guys be interested in reading about my opinion on movies? Be honest! – Sure, unless it was one I wanted to see and you didn't like it.
5.Do super long blog posts turn you off? Do you read them all? – Nope, unless its about a topic I'm not interested in. 🙂 Usually I read the whole thing either way.

    😀

    • kilax says:

Ha! I thought you might be the one that said “Because Kim is hot.” Or whatever it was 🙂

I do not eat weird stuff! LOL! I think I just eat a lot of different things than you do. You should do a day in the life of post where you post what you eat and I will do one too and we can compare 😛

  4. Erin says:

Do you like filling surveys out?

YES! In fact, I just accepted to a study that will pay me $200 at the end because of my love of surveys.

Tell me, do you prefer for me to post my commentary on Health + Fitness related news, or do you want to hear about my personal health (weight loss, body image, etc.)?

    I like both.

Which is more boring for you guys – the recipes, or talking about food products and restaurants?

The recipes are fun but I like hearing about new products or new restaurants. Especially if I can go to the restaurant at some point!

Would you guys be interested in reading about my opinion on movies? Be honest!

Well, since I’m the one who wrote that (yes, I’m giving myself away) of course I want to hear what you have to say about movies.

Do super long blog posts turn you off? Do you read them all?

They don’t turn me off, but I prefer that they be broken up if the post starts to be about more than two topics.

13% response rate is a little below a hoped for result but since a 20% response rate is typical I’d say you’re not doing too bad. Also, how do you find out how many Google Reader subscribers you have?

    • kilax says:

I thought you were the one who wrote about the movies. I am not sure if anyone else knows how many movies I watch.

In reader, select the blog you want to see the stats on, go to the top of the page, click “Feed Settings” and go to “View Details and Statitics.”

  5. Kandi says:

You’d think working in a survey heavy industry that I’d be more interested in participating in surveys… this isn’t really the case. I don’t mind if I think it will be helpful but I don’t always like to do them.
As far as post length… it depends on the blog whether or not I will read them. I usually read all your posts because I like your blog.
Also, not sure if my answers were included in your results (since I got the error when I submitted) but I think I marked that I read your posts organically but that’s not necessarily true. I sometimes read them in google reader and sometimes not.. but I almost always click over from GR to comment so that’s why I marked that.
I like hearing about recipes if they are something I’d make myself or if you’re using a new or interesting ingredient (like your soy curls). I wouldn’t want a play by play of everything you’ve eaten but it would be interesting to read about how you are able to maintain a vegan lifestyle.

    • kilax says:

What do you want to see in terms of my vegan lifestyle if not a play by play? 🙂 Just curious 🙂

  6. abbi says:

I love surveys, so of course I loved this post! Haha. I tend to prefer blogs about personal stories. That’s actually something that’s been stewing in my mind that I wanted to write a post about! Super long posts don’t turn me off, sometimes I don’t read them (in general, not meaning yours), just depends on what they are about. No opinion on movies and on food related things, I prefer recipe kind of things, but that’s just because I read lots of food blogs!

    • kilax says:

A lot of times I feel like my blog is not very personal – since I talk about studies/news crap I read. But then sometimes it is uber personal. I suppose I am the only one who knows what I am leaving out, so that is why it feels that way.

  7. martymankins says:

I don’t think I did the survey. At least I don’t remember doing it.

Also, seeing all of the pie charts almost made me think I was looking at a report from work. lol

As for surveys, I don’t do too many because most are over 5 mins and I lose patience with trying to finish 15-20 min surveys. Most of the ones I do are for Delta Skymiles out on e-Rewards.

  8. Stephany says:

Wow, graphs and statistics and everything! You outdid me. 😉

Do you like filling surveys out? I love to! I find them to be so much fun. 🙂

Tell me, do you prefer for me to post my commentary on Health + Fitness related news, or do you want to hear about my personal health (weight loss, body image, etc.)? I really like your commentary on H&F because you put a lot of thought & research into it! I think I love both, it would be interesting to hear more about your personal health, too.

Which is more boring for you guys – the recipes, or talking about food products and restaurants? None of the above. 🙂 I tune out of anything involving food, generally.

Would you guys be interested in reading about my opinion on movies? Be honest! It depends on how you would do a review! Some can be really interesting.

Do super long blog posts turn you off? Do you read them all? Not really. They don’t bother me. I like to read! 🙂

    • kilax says:

Google Docs made all of those charts! On its own!

I tune out a lot of food stuff too. So I try not to post it! But I posted it two times already this week. LOL. I am not very consistent!

  9. ChezJulie says:

1.Do you like filling surveys out? Yes, I love filling out surveys. Is that weird?
2.Tell me, do you prefer for me to post my commentary on Health + Fitness related news, or do you want to hear about my personal health (weight loss, body image, etc.)? I enjoy both.
3.Which is more boring for you guys – the recipes, or talking about food products and restaurants? Not a vegan so no opinion.
4.Would you guys be interested in reading about my opinion on movies? Be honest! I actually wouldn’t, because I like to see movies without reading a bunch of reviews about them first, and I’m afraid I would read your reviews!
5.Do super long blog posts turn you off? Do you read them all?
Some people’s do because they are all run together or rambling. But yours are always nicely spaced with cute pictures of Data, and injected with good humor. I skip or read the training posts depending on how busy I am, but I usually read everything else because you’re hot!

    • kilax says:

I don’t think it is weird, since I like filling surveys out too.

      LOL about the hot 😛 😛 😛

I skip this long rambling posts too. I know a lot of people who write that way.

  10. sizzle says:

Do you like filling surveys out? I LOVE SURVEYS!

Tell me, do you prefer for me to post my commentary on Health + Fitness related news, or do you want to hear about my personal health (weight loss, body image, etc.)? Both

Which is more boring for you guys – the recipes, or talking about food products and restaurants? Talking about food products.

Would you guys be interested in reading about my opinion on movies? Be honest! Sure!

Do super long blog posts turn you off? Do you read them all? I don’t always read the entire thing, I admit it.

    YAY FOR FRIDAY QUESTION!

  11. diane says:

I might come back and write more later, but off the top of my head I definitely would love to hear you talk about movies…as long as you’re not giving any spoilers away!! (or you put “spoiler alert” in big letters at the top, ha)
I love recipes and as you know I have gotten ideas from your site. Just because you are vegan doesn’t mean I can’t play with what you post (like when I put boca crumbles and ricotta cheese in the butternut squash lasagna!).
A long, long time ago I did freelance blogging for a PR company. Studies had proven that after 250 words, your audience loses interest. (not YOU, just anyone!) I tend to skim or go back and re-read longer posts. I don’t know any bloggers that keep to the 250 word rule!

    • kilax says:

I will have to play around with this movie idea and see what I can come up with! Maybe it can be a small blurb at the end of some posts 🙂

It’s a compliment that you try some of the recipes I like to! Thanks 🙂

Wow! 250? I think some of my comment responses are longer than that!!!
