Hot to cold to hot

By , July 18, 2012 3:30 pm

I think the heat has finally caught up with me. It was in the mid 90s when I ran yesterday afternoon. My stomach felt more and more queasy during the run. After that, I felt like I could not regulate my temperature. We went to a store in the evening, and the extreme cold of the store made me feel sick. I almost waited outside in the heat!

All of this back and forth from hot to cold is wearing me down! I have noticed after hot runs I need to sit outside for awhile before I can handle the AC indoors. And then I go from being too hot inside to too cold. My skin is always hot to the touch. Wah wah wah.

Is anyone else having a hard time dealing with the hot to cold to hot transitions?

I have a lot of headache/migraine triggers, and temperature swings is one of them. I woke up feeling absolutely awful this morning – pounding heat, queasy, dizzy, blurred vision. All signs pointed to migraine. Thankfully I feel better now, but I am just frustrated that I have no control over this. Sure, I could turn off the AC in my house so I did not have to deal with going from hot to cold, but then I would feel awful indoors!

Can I just say that I am jealous of your AC. I don’t have any in my house and sleeping is impossible. I am not dealing well with the heat in general. My running stinks.

Oh no! I was going to mention there is NO way I would turn off the AC because I would never fall asleep. Is it common not to have AC there?

This is the worst part for me too, and I don’t suffer from migraines. It really messes with my sleep too. I wake up hot then cold then hot. And yeah – the AC is almost more than I can take.

Still I run. Is it fall yet?

That was me this am. I was too hot then woke up shivering and feeling awful. Needless to say… you will not see me in class tonight!

Running this fall is going to feel AWESOME!!!

The hot to cold transitions and vice versa are horrible. When I get back from running in the heat, I actually prefer drinking water or beverages that are only slightly cool. My head will hurt if I gulp down an ice-cold beverage (guess it’s similar to ice cream headaches).

  4. I have a hard time with temperature changes like that too. And if it gets too hot out and I try to run, I always feel sick. Always.

  5. YES.
Just walking in and out of my office makes me feel “off”. I think that’s why I get so exhausted. I’m used to being in the below-70 temps inside and get blasted with hot and humid on my way home.
I’m a total waste of space by the time I actually make it to my apartment.

But everybody sets their AC so low here! Even without having gone for a run beforehand, just entering a building is such a shock for me! And I am always wearing a jacket in the office. I always get weird headaches and colds due to AC in the summer 🙁

Wow, it sounds like the weather really knocked you for a loop. I’m glad to be missing the heat wave (though let’s be honest, I’d gladly come home to heat RIGHT NOW).

The cold-hot-cold transition is pretty dramatic since everyone runs their AC so much indoors in the US (vs. in Korea where people just like to be sticky all the time).

I hope your migraine goes away! Are they triggered by weather conditions? (I think I just had one a few days ago too.)

P was sent home from work today for suspected heat exhaustion. Friday was the first time I ever threw up on myself during a run. I decided to take this week off from the couch to 5K program. I have just not been feeling well. :\

  9. I haven’t had trouble yet, but man, that sounds miserable!!

The hot to cold doesn’t seem to bother me so much, it’s just the heat in general. I don’t feel much like eating in the heat and I get what I call heat headaches when it’s unbearable outside. Those are some nasty headaches but probably nothing compared to a migraine!

  11. I used to LOVE running in hot weather (I’m sick, I know), but hated the body regulation issues when entering AC. I totally echo everything you said!

We keep our apartment at a brisk 79, and it STILL bothers me. I sit in my 80 degree living room with a blanket like a weirdo

Not so luckily, I haven’t been running. But this heat is brutal!! I miss the suburban life where I can run through sprinklers, haha.

Good luck with the heat! I went for a run yesterday and it was about 90 – took me forever to feel “normal” (hydrated and fueled) afterwards.
One thing I like about Southern CA is that places don’t crank the AC to a crazy level. I grew up in Texas where you have to take a sweater wherever you go in the summer because most places (homes, restaurants, shops) are so cold with the AC!

I got a migraine yesterday. In the summer heat/humidity I always have to be cautious when running in the heat. Most of my migraines are a result of running when it’s hot out and then coming into the AC. I drink a ton of water but it doesn’t always help.

This really used to bother me but I haven’t noticed it as much this year. Not sure why since it’s a bazillion degrees outside!
