Random Thoughts Thursday 56

  • Is anyone else trying to see some of Oscar nominated films for Best Picture before the Oscars (on March 2)? It seems like we typically see the Oscar nominated films after the Oscars (and never really care for them that much!). But we are having an Oscars get-together this year, so I thought maybe I should see more than one! So far, we’ve seen Gravity and American Hustle. I’d like to see Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club12 Years a SlaveHer, and Captain Phillips, too. Luckily our theater has $5 movie tickets on Tuesday nights!

  • Have you ever funded a Kickstarter? What was it? I just participated in my first one – Otters! A kid-friendly card game. Gina‘s husband’s cousin came up with the game, it sounds cute, and I love games and otters… so it was a no-brainer to “back” the project.

  • For some reason, it fascinates me to hear about athletes who have switched over from their main sport to bobsledding. So I thought this article (pdf here), that talks about bobsledding training, was interesting.
  • I don’t usually carry a purse (or even my wallet, if I am with Steven – bad habit) but Steven got me a purse for Christmas, so I have been using it. And it’s nice not to have everything in my pockets… but now I stress if something is still in my purse, after I put it in there, and am constantly checking to make sure things are in there. Ha ha.
  • What is everyone keeping their house temp at this winter? Ours is around 66°F. Steven and I like to keep it cool, and wear layers (we’d rather be too cold than hot) but I don’t think Data cares for it…

  • Do you send long emails back and forth with your friends, to keep in touch? Or are you more likely to text, call, FaceTime, real face time!, or something else?

We keep our house at 64 but our house is only 10 years old and has decent insulation in it. But just like you we would rather wear layers. We wear socks (important), sweatshirts and sweat pants around the house and are comfortable. i sometimes have a blanket on my legs on the couch if I want to be cozy but otherwise its not so bad.

  2. Amy says:

We keep our house pretty cool, too. I have to have warm clothes on in the house or I’m freezing.

I really want to see the Dallas Buyers Club, I heard Matthew McConaghey was really good in it. I normally don’t really care about seeing all the nominated movies.

Did you know a Belgian movie is nominated for Best Foreign Film? It’s called “Broken Circle Breakdown” and it did really well here. I didn’t see it (I was afraid it would be too sad) but my son saw it and loved it.

    • kilax says:

Yeah, the story for Dallas Buyers Club sounds really good, too!

I didn’t know that! Hmm. I will have to look in to that/see if I can get it on Netflix!

I am an Oscar nut this time of the year and am trying to see movies before March 2nd. I’ve only seen 2 on the nominated list: Wolf of Wall Street and Captain Phillips. Both movies very incredible. Need to add Dallas Buyers Club and American Hustle to this list. I have a feeling the love the Academy has for David O. Russell that American Hustle will win a few. Although, in the end, 12 Years a Slave might just win best picture, very much how Slumdog Millionaire won a few years ago.

As for Kickstarter, I backed one for Bob Mould, who was with Husker Du and Sugar years ago. He did a concert DVD that I wanted to see.

    • kilax says:

I think we are going to see Wolf of Wall Street next week! I am excited! 🙂 I usually like the Scorsese/DiCaprio combo. And I think you are right on with the American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave fight for Best Picture. Ahh! I can’t decide who I will vote for!!!

      • Diane says:

I am anxious to hear your thoughts on Wolf of Wallstreet. I decided not to see it because it just sounds…repellent. But I guess that’s kind of the point. Anyway, let us know what you think!

  4. I have seen 1/2 of an Oscar nominated film. Mark rented “Captain Phillips” and I fell asleep. A winner, I am. I’d like to see “American Hustle” but sometimes I find JLaw to be a little awkward on screen. I’m not sure if I can buy her being sexy.

I send long emails to my BFF in Nebraska, usually M-F, and try to call her a couple times a week. I may start trying to do video messages b/c it seems easier though I can’t do it at work.

    • kilax says:

LOL!!!!!! Hey, that is okay. I fall asleep a lot when we watch stuff during lunch, and many movies, I lose interest in. That is funny that you find Jennifer Lawrence awkward! I loved her in this role. 🙂

Aww! Tell me about your Nebraska BFF!

  5. Kandi says:

I don’t think I’ve seen any Oscar movies this year and don’t plan to watch them any time soon. I won’t even watch the Oscars. I’ll probably read about the winners the next day or something though.
We keep our house at 68 but it still feels cold. Our basement is always about 3-4 degrees colder and we usually spend most of our time down there (except for now since it flooded and is still torn apart). I typically wear a sweatshirt, pants, and socks with slippers and am still usually cold unless I’m moving around.

  6. Marcia says:

Data is too cute! Snuggly cat! We saw Gravity, I’d love to see American Hustle but probably won’t before the Oscars. Our house is at 66 during the day, 62 or 63 at night.

  7. Kristina says:

Those are the best photos of Data!
I haven’t kept up with the Oscar race AT ALL this year. We usually see movies after the fact as well, but this year, we’ve had a particularly long dry spell without going to the theatre.

  8. I’m a big fan of having a cooler house during the winter and just using blankets, but my husband isn’t a fan. It helps that I’ve trained my dog to sit on my feet when they’re cold. 🙂 Have a great Thursday!

  9. Erin says:

Well, I’m not a huge movie person although I love the story behind Dallas Buyer’s Club so maybe some day I’ll watch that if I’m in need of a movie to watch for some reason.

I have funded Kickstarter campaigns but neither got fully funded so I got my money back. Jason funded the Geek Bar campaign and just got his shirt in the mail!

I’m sure after you’ve been using your purse consistently you’ll get used to it. That’s one of the reasons I’m a fan of always putting things in the same place!

Okay, I’ll be honest, I always have to remember to bring many more layers to wear when I come to your house in the winter. We keep our apartment at 72 and even then I’m usually under a blanket on the couch or using the heated mattress pad to warm up the bed before I get in!

  10. Xaarlin says:

    I don’t usually watch movies… I live under a rock.

I’ve never funded a kick starter before. That otter game looks really cute 🙂

I’ve been loving reading about Lolo going from sprinter to bobsledder. There was also another girl who didn’t make the team who was a volleyball player from aroun here. So fascinating how she had to put on so much weight (muscle). Wonder if she plans to sprint again professionally.

I’m sure our house is sub 60 degrees during the day- but CB can lay by the door to get the warm air some he destroyed the draft blocker. Poor cold dates. He needs a snuggie.

I like emails with friends, or FB messages. As you know 😉

    • kilax says:

LOL. I don’t think you live under a rock. It’s just not your “thing.” 😉 Just like some of the things that are your thing are not my thing. Did you follow that?! 😛

YES! I have been loving reading about that, too!!!! I wonder when she competes. Hmm. Lolo has said she wants to slim back down to compete in 2016!

  11. Heather says:

66 degrees??! OMG, I would freeze – lol. We keep our house at 72 (73 if I’m home alone – lol)!
Captain Phillips was a great movie – I’m still dying to see American Hustle.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! That is funny! Yeah, we just like the cold. 70s is too warm for us!

I wonder if I will like Captain Phillips! I want to see it!

  12. Michele says:

Umm 66?!?! Are you freaking serious???? I’d freeze my buns off! (maybe I should come over then, I’m trying to lose these buns)

And Data, poor kitty. He’s FREEZING!!!

Tell Data he can come stay with me, and I’m not even a cat person, but I’d take him in!

    • kilax says:

I am serious!!!! lol Data wonders if you will take him on walks, outside, too? (when it warms up)

P.S. Steven and I have a few family members who keep it WAY too warm (for us) in their houses, so this is probably part of the reason we keep it low, along with energy efficiency.

  13. jan says:

I haven’t supported a kickstart campaign but I’m intrigued. The game is cute!

  14. chezjulie says:

I’ve seen Gravity (cool and exciting), American Hustle (good but maybe a little overrated), and Captain Phillips (fantastic). Captain Phillips is available on Amazon Instant Video now (and probably Netflix). I would really like to see Dallas Buyers Club, too.

  15. Stephany says:

Holy crap! 66 degrees! I would freeze. I came home the other day and our apartment was 72 and it was SO COLD to me. We usually keep it around 73-75… plus, anything lower than that means a really high electric bill.

    • kilax says:

LOL! Of course you would freeze! You are used to the warmth! 🙂 But it’s the opposite here with the electric bill right now 😉

  16. Meghan says:

Ahh! Oscar talk! OK, I am a huge Oscar nerd. Like, when I was a kid, I would make lists of who won Best Picture, Actress, Actor, etc. Why? I don’t know. I love old movies and lists? So I do get pretty excited every year.

Mike and I saw American Hustle and as much as I loved the acting and characters, I was super confused by the story (I suppose it didn’t help that I fell asleep at one point). Dallas Buyers Club was fantastic. I thought the story line was really interesting, and Matty M was amazing. And I honestly like Wolf of Wall Street more than I thought I would – I had heard that it was really lewd, but it wasn’t as bad as I anticipated.

That’s all I’ve seen so far! 12 Years is next on my list!

    • kilax says:

Aww! I love that!!!!!! So cute! 🙂

Ha ha ha. Yeah, there were parts of the story I had to ask Steven about! I am NOT good at following movies though. I thought so much of it was fantastic, but it was a bit slow. 😉

I can’t wait to see those two!!!!!!!!

Will you make it to see 12 Years a Slave?!

  17. Michael says:

I’ve seen five of the nine. I have no desire to see Her or Philomena. I’m a whatever on Nebraska, but I would still like to see Gravity and think I’m the only person left in the world who hasn’t seen it.

I did a kickstarter not long ago for Tribe Sports. I got a pair of capris and a long sleeve running shirt for my contribution, so not too bad.

  18. I’ve seen a decent amount of the oscar noms this year… still waiting to see Gravity and Captain Phillips, though… ah well.

  19. I normally text with my friends to keep in touch, and I haven’t funded a kickstarter. I haven’t seen any of the movies, but I’ve heard fantastic things about Gravity.

    • kilax says:

Let me know what you think of Gravity if you see it. I kept getting bored during previews for it, then went because of those reviews and was bored out of my mind. But! I am more of an action gal. So I usually struggle with all the Oscar nominated pics!

  20. Mica says:

I like to send emails to youuuuu, which reminds me, I should send you one soon. 🙂 I also like messaging back and forth with you too.

I have seen none of the Oscar contenders and probably won’t. When are the Oscars anyway…? Though I’ve heard “Philomena” is good, so I might see that one.

Our apartment is currently at 72 degrees (which is the warmest it ever gets because we have the oven on), but we don’t keep it at anything. Best part of living in San Francisco!!

I haven’t funded anything on Kickstarter, but my friend’s brother has had two games successfully funded that way. I think it’s really cool!

    • kilax says:

Thanks! I like our emails and texts, too!

The Oscars are March 2. I usually don’t see any of the flicks until after, and usually don’t care for them that much! Philomena is not one I was that interested in, so I will be curious in what you think if you see it!
