Random Thoughts Thursday 88

  • Relationship dynamics are extremely interesting to me, and something I read on quite a bit. Especially the maintenance of relationships, and knowing when to let one go. Anyway! I love when gems like this – “Disposable Friendships in a Mobile World” (pdf here) – show up in my Feedly. Basically, it’s about a study that was done to see if people who move more often also dispose of relationships more often (since they are more likely to dispose of physical items, too). Conclusion: it’s not so much that moving causes you to abandon relationships, but that it pushes you to evaluate them (like many things in life do!). I strongly believe people should constantly be analyzing if they are getting what they need out of their relationships. This, but all the time – “moving also requires making choices about which relationships are ‘worth’ maintaining and which are not, which ties could be replaced and which ties should be maintained.”
  • That silly bruise took a week to heal! And didn’t feel too great. Eek! I haven’t had any accidents since then but I do feel like my hands aren’t functioning well – I’ve been having a hard time getting things to open this week (jars, bags, etc). Weird. Work with me, body, not against me!

  • My mom’s mom is more on trend than me. When I talked to her last, she told me her girlfriend got her in to doing one of those adult coloring books. Say what? My snister sent me one in the fall, but I haven’t taken time to color much of it. I should do that instead of play with my phone when we watch (parts of) movies (then get up and do house stuff). I should get back to knitting, too! I know where all my knitting stuff is!

  • When we got to our house on close day we found out the driveway and yard were a sheet of ice. Eek! We’ve had an odd winter of sporadic warm temps and freeze/thaw cycles. Pair that with all the shade in our yard and you get LOTS of ice! Steven and my dad got an ice scraper on move-in weekend and it’s been SOOOOO useful for getting ice off our driveway, sidewalk and off our patio (and then there was that time we tried to use it during mailbox install but that’s a story for another day…). What a useful and fun tool! I spent a lot of last Friday getting the last chunks of ice off our patio and my deltoids were feeling it!

This picture doesn’t do it justice – the patio was covered in a snow/ice mix!

This is what I got it down to after a bit of work. Then I broke this in to big chunks and picked up some to toss…

… and did a little curling with the others. Ha!

  • One more article to end the post! “Why You Keep Signing Your Future Self Up for Stuff You Don’t Actually Want to Do” (pdf here) explains how you think of your future self separate from your present self – which is why you might think you’ll have more time to do things, or an interest in something you don’t now. Interesting stuff. Their advice? If you wouldn’t want to do it now, don’t say you’ll do it in the (near) future.

  1. Maybe that’s why I have no friends 🙈 the bruise on my knee took a good three weeks to be completely gone even then below the kneecap took another week or two to deflate itself. I think it’s just hitting areas with so little fat reallly bruises deep. Maybe inside your elbow is a little swollen and that’s why your hands are being weird. Talk about beasting it out with the ice. I’d say it’s exhausting!!

LOL! That is NO excuse! How long have you lived there?! 😛

Geesh! That is a looooong time for your knee! Silly bruises!

Hmm, that could be what is up with my hands!

  2. Oh man! Adult coloring books are my jam! If you’re ever stressed at all, def take some time to color, it works like a charm! Plus it’s fun! My friend got me one for Christmas and we have coloring competitions because we’re dorks!

Sorry about the ice at your new house but CONGRATULATIONS!

    • kilax says:

Ha! That’s fun you guys have competitions! I actually get more stressed with mine, cause I worry about what colors to use. Yep. LOL.

      Thanks!

      And thanks for commenting!

      • Of course! I was looking at an old post earlier and was like, I wonder if she’s still blogging! Glad to know you are. I subscribed and can’t wait to read more!

And, yes, choosing colors is always pretty stressful for me, too! haha

Really interesting article about signing your future self up for stuff. And our driveway did that sheet of ice thing too with all the alternating between cold and warm temperatures we’ve had this Winter.

  4. Erin says:

Great articles this week! Thanks for sharing. Both are really interesting. I don’t know if I necessarily agree with the “if I wouldn’t want to do it now, don’t say you’ll do it in the future,” though. I like to look at my calendar and see how busy I’ll be before I say yes to something. The downside is when a bunch of things all get scheduled for the same week but I don’t find out about them until right before. Then I’m overscheduled even though when I committed to one or two things I wasn’t!

    • kilax says:

Ugh, I really hate it when that happens to me, too 🙁 I have a good grasp of what I can handle with my calendar and try to plan accordingly and struggle when that happens! Ahh, life 🙂

  5. Adult coloring books have apparently become all the rage these days! What an ingenious idea. Is it bad that when I first heard about them, I thought they were the type of thing that were not appropriate for people under the age of 18? So bad, I know. I need to find a way to stay off of my phone, too. My social media fixation has been getting worse these days. Sorry to hear about the reduced dexterity these days – I hope that clears up soon!

    • kilax says:

Ha! I thought the same thing! LOL

And also with staying off social media. Last night I was looking at Facebook and thought “I am so sick of Facebook!” I am going to try to mostly stay off except for work (Efit) and blog stuff.

  6. Lesley says:

The only adult coloring book I’ve seen is for Dr. Who, and I call it adult because all of my friends (mid-20s and up) would love it.

  7. Shelley B says:

It looks like you were making blocks to build an igloo, which could be a fun winter project (says the person who lives where she has to deal with neither ice nor snow).

I always say I don’t do the adult coloring books because I knit…there’s only so much free time for leisure activities, right? Although we do carry some of the coloring books and colored pencils in the hospital gift shop where I volunteer, and they are pretty popular.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! I have seen people build some impressive ones out here, before!

Yeah… I kind of feel that way, too 🙂 I bet lots of people pick them up at the shop! It would be nice to do while you were waiting, there!

  8. Mica says:

I can always count on you to share interesting articles, thanks for finding them!

I’ll be interested to hear your opinion on coloring books. I feel really stressed out when I try to do them, so I haven’t done many. And yes, I hope you get back to knitting soon so I can see what you make!

    • kilax says:

      You’re welcome! 🙂

Yeah, the coloring books stress me out. Like “is this the right color?” “How will this all look together?!” I find knitting much more relaxing.
