How I spent Columbus Day…

By , October 9, 2012 6:23 am

I need your help figuring out exactly how pathetic I am.

So, I had a clothing avalanche* in my closet on July 12. I have 8 metal cube shelves to hold some items (example here) and two of the connectors came off. Everything fell on the floor, which already had stuff on it… and the connectors were lost. So how long did it take me to clean up this mess?

If you were guessing the amount of days between July 12 and October 8, then DING DING DING!, you guessed correctly!

I feel like I have bad juju with the walk-in closet gods now. Especially the personal walk-in closet gods. Sigh! What can I do to get on good terms again? Not be a slob? NOOOOO!!!!

Where do you store your clothes? Closet (your own?), dresser, on the floor?

I have my own closet and a dresser too. Yet, it never seems like enough space, and I am always donating to Goodwill. How does that work?!

Don’t worry! That is not how I spent my entire Columbus Day Holiday. I also went grocery shopping:

helped Steven with some FakeMeats.com photos, took an hour nap (shhh), met Anne for the first time (!!!) for a beautiful run,

and a had a Skype date with my New York peeps

Did anyone else have Columbus Day off?

*Sadly, there is no photo to document the avalanche.

Oh wow. I have no room to talk about overstuffed closets. We have a big closet, yet my big dresser is stuffed. And there’s a big closet downstairs where I keep out of season stuff. It always feels like I have too much yet often I have ‘nothing’ to wear.

  2. It’s like how I unpack… it takes waaaaayyyy too much time to actually take the time to do it. :p

I had to work. 🙁 Sorta jealous- it would have been nice to have an extra day off after the weekend!

The other day I was like “Where are all my sports bras?!” Uhh… two were still in my suitcase from our mid Sept trip to NYC. Oops. 😉

  3. I’m jealous of your day off!!! Maybe when I start working from home we can meet for secret mid-day runs! Also, I feel you on the closet. I went through mine this past weekend and donated a whole trash bag of clothing! Yet, I still feel like my closet is overflowing with stuff I never wear. Humph.

It would be nice to run midday! I already fit in a workout with my trainer since it takes an hour to get there, workout and back home 🙂

I have so so so many projects like that to tackle now that I am NOT TRAINING FOR ANYTHING.

I spent Columbus Day on the couch with my feet up 🙂

A personal walk-in closet? So jealous. We have exactly one closet to share here. The one in the second bedroom is occupied by a washer/dryer and bathroom storage (since it backs into the bathroom closet), and the hall closet is full of cleaning stuff and a 40 pound bag of dog food. Yay city living! So I have half the closet, a dresser, drawers under my bed and a few storage bins under the guest bed. I try to get off-season stuff into said underbed drawers/bins, but right now my closet is totally stuffed.

I’m so glad we could finally run together yesterday – it was so much fun! I checked, and it was one of my fastest runs in a while, so thanks for pacing me a little faster than I usually go!

That sounds like a really productive day! I am really jealous that you had a day off! I would love to have a day to get a bunch of stuff done and take a nap!

ha! I love the heart border! I laughed out loud in my cube at that!

We’re working on our gear/junk room – and we’ve been working on it since August. Sigh.
Glad that you enjoyed the weekend. I wish I had a three-day weekend on a regular basis. That would be awesome…

  9. Sadly I did not have Columbus Day off and this is how I felt:

In other news, I totally need to re-do my closets. They are quite deep and a lot of the space is underutilized. That is a different project for a different day though… I don’t even have a functioning bulb in the closet! Yikes!!!

  10. I’m pretty good about keeping my daily clothes and closet in check. Now the sports gear…

I felt so accomplished on my day off yesterday – went to the dentist, cleaned the house, raked the yard and swept the sidewalk in front of my house, went to Sams club with Joey, made pizza dough for homemade calzones, made calzones, had a fire in our fireplace, spent some time on the couch with the dogs. A very nice day.

I’ve had a closet avalanche in the past and it was quite traumatic! So I feel your pain. I have a walk-in closet and a dresser, but yet I still never seem to have enough room for just my running shoes, let alone everything else. =D

The guy in your New York peeps Skype date picture is the spitting image of one of Adam’s best friends from college!!! I will have to show you his friend’s picture. The resemblance is truly shocking!!!

    • kilax says:

You know, our friend Steve (in the pic) looks like someone I pass all the time on my walk to work! He must have a lot of dopplegangers!!! What did Adam think?

  13. Christina says:

I didn’t have columbus day off yesterday. That path looks gorgeous!

  14. Erin says:

You had a productive day off! I had a slightly less productive day at work.

I recently read a post about why our closets are full yet we are always finding things to donate. It’s because we shop the sale racks instead of going into a store with an idea about what holes we need to fill in our wardrobes. So we have a ton of stuff that doesn’t seem to go with anything else or with our lifestyle and we don’t wear it, it takes up space, and then we get rid of it. But we’ve already replaced with other stuff that will follow the same path.

    • kilax says:

No more sales racks for me then. NO MORE CLOTHES. I HAVE TOO MANY. I usually ask for running clothes for the holidays, but not this year!

  15. Kacy says:

I did not have it off. Lame. I love organizing my closets. Love. So now I’m kind of doubly jealous of you 🙂

  16. Julia @ pain, pride and perseverance says:

ummmm YES Columbus Day may be my new favorite day to have off for sure. it was a first for me and i loved every second:):):) i would have probably bought every single box of those oreos had I seen them and that run trail = gorgeous! super jealous of that run!

Our closet in the room we chose as our bedroom is the only one in the entire house that didn’t have a bar installed inside. So we rigged something that has fallen THREE times. UGH. I’m over it. We are hiring my brother in law to build me a walk in closet in another part of the downstairs so that Darcy will have that closet to himself and I can have a “Dressing Area” for all my clothes. We both have our own dressers too. It’s a wonder why I feel like I never have anything to wear?
