Teachiversary

Woo hoo! Tonight marks a year that I have been teaching the Monday night strength class at Essential Fitness LLC (Efit)! The first class I taught was March 4, 2013.

Ha ha ha! Very funny that the March chalkboard from last year said “goodbye snow!” on it! We just got dumped on with snow this Saturday. Love me some snow.

And now, for a recap of each month of teaching and what I have learned, including many, many pictures…

Just kidding! no1curr!

A lot has changed in a year though (gah, I hope, right?). I got my ACE personal trainer certification in July. I continue to study each week (Data is still “Study Cat”!) and take continuing education.

I’ve expanded my music horizons a lot to try to find good tunes for class (I still prefer 80s tunes and classic rock the most, it seems!).

I started teaching the Friday 5:00 am class in September. And I taught my first cycling class this weekend!

I sport my Efit gear for as many things as possible! Ha ha! As I’ve mentioned – Efit is my workout family!

And two very important things:

  1. I’ve made awesome connections with the people who take Efit classes. I sometimes feel odd calling them “students,” because we teach one another! And it’s really cool, with so many classes offered (every weekday), I’ve gotten to workout with many different people – whether they are taking my class as a make-up class or switching to Monday nights for awhile.
  2. I’ve had so much support from family and friends. Several family members and many friends have taken my classes, sometimes driving from over an hour to come. That means a lot to me. As it does when they check in to ask “how class  is going.” Thanks for all your support!

And the most awesome thing about teaching? GETTING TO TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO DO!!!! Ha ha ha. That is about the only area in life I get to do that. It’s fun. Heh.

So tell me, what do you like about the group fitness classes you take? I am always looking for tips and ideas!

Wow! It’s been a year ALREADY! Dang I feel old. Wait – I am old! Or at least in comparison to the teacher! But I was there – I remember your FIRST class. Awww… Love the classes and am glad I joined the 5am class. Absolutely LOOOVVEEE the 80s playlists! Never tire of the changeup in routines, esp when boxing is involved! hehe

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! Don’t feel old!!! It’s funny, I really forget about age with all of us Efiters… I forget we are all not the same age!

And thank you!!! 🙂 I am happy someone loves the 80s as much as I do! Ha!

  2. Jen2 says:

I’m just gonna say Happy Anniversary!!!! I have no advice for your classes but am so happy I joined on Mondays. Still working on the nerve for Fridays, but I love ya!!

  3. Pete says:

    Kim,

Congrats on a year! Wow, time flew by! Your classes are great! The only advice I can give (and it’s probably only good for *me*) is feel free to push us (me) harder. And really you have been lately, so I think you already figured that out.

    Again, congratulations! 🙂

  4. Anne says:

WOOOOOOO!!!!!! Congrats! I actually can’t believe it’s ONLY been a year – it kind of seems like you’ve been doing this forever 🙂 You’re right, a lot has happened in a year!

Gosh, I love just about everything about group fitness classes! But my favorite part is probably the “gym friends” I’ve made in my classes. It’s just so much more fun than working out alone, and you’re right, we do all learn from each other.

Also, last March was spring-like? That’s not depressing.

    • kilax says:

Thanks! Remember what Mondays used to be just over a year ago? Sniff sniff 😉 I still miss our weekly run dates. I bet you don’t miss being in the office more often though! LOL!

I was thinking about that this morning, and even though personal training gives the client much more attention, I do think classes are more fun because you are with your buddies.

LOL! I looked at the pics/data from the first day I taught last year and there was still quite a bit of snow but the temp during my run that day was 34!

      • Anne says:

Sigh, yeah, I didn’t want to bring that up. And now Monday is my speed day, so I guess it all worked out.

Having done personal training on my own and with Bob, I definitely preferred doing it with Bob. Obviously it was a little cheaper (or free, since it was my Christmas present!), but it was fun to do all of this new stuff together and to be a little competitive with each other.

I know when I came to your class at the end of March last year I didn’t need to wear a real coat, just a light running jacket. Sigh….

    Happy teachaversary!!!!

  6. My favorite part about classes is the extra motivation it gives me (sometimes through competition), the accountability and doing different things all the time. All of which you already do.

    • kilax says:

Yes! It’s so fun to push it in class and tease your friends about who can do “more,” even though it is just teasing 🙂

  7. Kristina says:

That’s great! As a classroom teacher, I think that I love that aspect – constantly learning from my students and having to make adjustments to every class.
As a student – I like being pushed in a way that I don’t/wouldn’t push myself ordinarily. And I just discovered that I have internalized this one instructor’s voice and when I’m having to hit a higher heart rate zone, I can hear him telling us to keep going! I’m not sure how positive that really is, but he’s a great instructor – cares about form, will compliment people but will also tell people to take some off or to pay attention to something small.

    • kilax says:

It’s interesting you brought up making adjustments to each class. I find myself tweaking things in advance and in the spur of the moment, which is pretty fun 🙂

Ha ha! It sounds like that is a positive thing! It’s pushing you to work harder! 🙂

  8. Losing Lindy says:

wow this past year went fast!! I was just commenting on someone else’s blog about how much I miss my running group. Can’t wait to get back together with them

  9. Amy says:

Congratulations, Kim! I’m not a big group class fan, but I think if you were teaching, I’d probably enjoy it. Your students are lucky!

  10. Erin says:

One year flew by!! Seems like just yesterday you started 🙂 Aww!

I’ve loved every class I’ve attended with you as well as working with you one-on-one. You really do a good job paying attention to how hard people are working and, if you know them well, making them work harder 🙂 That’s what I love in a class: when the instructor takes the time to notice if you need to be pushed more or less.

Also, I just love the energy of a group class.

    • kilax says:

Thanks! You saying “know them well” makes me think about how it can be tricky if you have a student only once and want to push them… but don’t know their limits. I just hate to think someone would not be getting a good workout!

      • Anne says:

You could always offer modifications that make it harder if people want to push themselves – I know it’s not quite the same, but it’s better than nothing. I see that most in yoga classes, since a lot of the people taking those seem to rotate pretty regularly.

  11. Valerie says:

Congrats Kim!! What a great fit with your passions! I love group fitness- super motivating and fun to be working out with others that have a common goal!

  12. Maggie says:

    Congratulations!!

I love learning new moves in group classes, and being challenged. But the classes that stand out to me the most are at a Pilates Mat & Equipment studio that limits all classes 4 students (each class is $25 though). We get awesome personal attention – the teacher had such a close eye on our form and would constantly give us little modifications to make sure we were doing each move the best way possible. I love Pilates, so I loved feeling like I was learning how to do every move correctly.

    • kilax says:

That is an awesome thing to offer! And the cost makes sense – it’s getting close to a personal training session at that point! 🙂

      • Maggie says:

That’s what I was thinking after I left the comment. And with the small class size, if you come back, the teacher remembers you, and can comment on your progress as well. I can’t afford to pay that much for every class, but once in awhile, mixed in with less personal group classes, is great. (I guess that’s the idea of personal training, right?)

        • kilax says:

Have you been to any place that offers “group” personal training? We offer that at our studio – small groups (2-4) so you get that attention. 🙂

          • Maggie says:

Probably … I should look into it. I always assume with those you have to have your own group already set, but I’m guessing they’ll pair you up with someone if you don’?

  13. ChezJulie says:

I love the sense of community with my dance classes. And with either classes or a trainer, I love that it makes the time go quicker. Anything that can make it “fun” I enjoy – dancing in a circle, tossing a medicine ball, goofy jokes, whatever.

  14. Michele says:

I don’t take any group fitness classes, but if I’m ever in the area, I’m taking yours!!!!

I cannot believe it’s been a year!! Crazy how time flies!!!

  15. Heather says:

The enthusiasm of the instructor is what gets me. That, and when the instructor makes an effort to get to know everyone. I love when they call out my name during class – makes me move my ass!! Lol.
    Congrats on one year!!

  16. Congrats! I need to take one of your classes. 🙂

  17. Mica says:

Happy one year anniversary! I’m glad you’re learning so much and continuing to find it enriching! I wish I could take your class some time.

    • kilax says:

Thanks!!! I wish you could, too! 🙂 I wonder if you could find anything like that where you live! It’s a really good way to make new friends!

It’s been years since I took a group fitness class (I used to do a spinning class at Bally’s before they closed all Utah locations down). I want to go again, but the gym I currently go to (Planet Fitness) doesn’t have any classes at the location I go to (3 blocks from my house).

I will find something here this year as I want to find a gym that has a swimming pool so I can do laps (one thing I really miss from Bally’s).
