Random Thoughts Thursday II

By , July 21, 2011 5:24 am

Ha! Another week of random thoughts:

  • Yesterday when Steven was picking me up at the train station, a man approached him (as I was walking to the car) and asked Steven to help him with directions to a nearby hospital/clinic. Steven told the man how to get there, then he said thanks, and that he would walk the 3 miles to the hospital. We got in to our car and I said, “Don’t you think we should offer than man a ride?” It seemed risky (since we had no idea who he was), but with the temps near 100° and it being so frickin’ humid, I thought we should offer. We did, and he accepted. It’s a good thing we helped him because he had the address wrong anyway! If he would have walked, he would have gone a mile or so in the wrong direction. So, this guy took Metra 20 miles north to visit his friend who was ill, and was going to walk to the hospital. My oh my. I could tell he was European by his accent. He is probably used to public transportation being more readily available (or just used to all that walking) – I know I relied on it when I lived in Italy. Anyway, would you have offered him a ride?
  • Okay, me telling that story totally reminds me of the time I got me and a friend from Verona to Paris with very little planning except having plane tickets. We ended up riding from the airport (60 miles away from Paris) in to the city with a man and his wife that I met on the plane. Wow (You can read about that adventure here, Feb 3 post) would you have done that (got in the car with two strangers)?
  • I got my hair cut yesterday. When I sat down and the stylist started combing my hair she asked “Do you straighten your hair?” I said I used to, but haven’t for months. Then she said “Do you dye your hair a lot?” And I said “No… why?”  “Well, your hair is incredibly dry.” Great. Thanks. I don’t even do damaging things to my hair (straighten it, blow dry it, or dye it) and it still looks like crap. Wah wah wah.
  • Brian had to cancel our strength session today. I am bummed! That was going to be my only strength workout this week. I look forward to them. Wah.
  • I read Dead Until Dark while I was on travel (Erin loaned in to me in the winter). Look at me, reading books – woo hoo (it takes me forever to read a book these days)! Anyway, it’s the first in the Sookie Stackhouse books that the show True Blood is based on. I thought it was a fun read, and interesting (but I am not in love with the book or anything). Anyone else read the books or like the show?
  • Oops. I should have read the instructions to my antibiotics before taking them (I didn’t read them until last night). I was totally out in the sun for a long time on Tuesday and have been taking the meds with my vitamins. Antibiotic FAIL.
  • Anyone else running in this heat? I went out on Tuesday night in Louisville and put in 5 fun miles. I’ll probably be out there today too.
  • I saw this note (below) where I started my run on Tuesday. It was on this plaque about Lewis & Clark. I almost feel like I should submit it to passiveaggressivenotes.com (does someone want to for me?).
  • This is the first post in a long time that I have had ready to publish the night before! All of my posts used to be that way. Now they all seem to be on the fly. Do you have your posts pre-written and scheduled to publish?

  1. I wouldn’t have given the guy a ride if I were alone, but if Dave were with me we probably would have! Considering the heat yesterday I’m SO glad you helped the guy out!!

  2. Kierstan says:

You are so nice to have given that man a ride, I am sure it made his day! I think I would have if I were in the car with my husband.

Wow – that note sucks. Did you throw it away?

    • kilax says:

It did suck! But I didn’t even think to throw it away. Now I feel like a loser. Can I blame it on the dehydration? 🙁

  3. bobbi says:

We are huge True Blood fans over here. But I am having a hard time, because in the beginning, the show followed the books very closely, but after a while, the show drifted pretty far away from the books, and jacks with the timeline of things in the books. Both are very good in their own right, but I find it tough to reconcile in my head…

I would have wanted to take the ride and give the ride, but in reality, I probably wouldn’t have either time…I am a chicken…

    • kilax says:

I was talking to the girl who styled my hair about the show, because she had just rented season 1. I could tell just from our conversation that season 1 strayed a lot from the book. I bet that would be really annoying if you had read the books!

  4. Kandi says:

If Joey was with me I would have wanted to offer the guy a ride, if I was alone I wouldn’t have.
Are you asking if I’d accept a ride with two random people I met on a plane or if I’d offer a ride to two random girls that I met on a plane? Either way I think it would depend on the situation. My friend and I (possibly against our better judgement) took a ride from people we had just met in the Bahamas back to our condo.
I have a friend who never blow dries her hair, never straightens it, doesn’t even use any kind of product in it (other than shampoo and conditioner) and every time she goes to get a hair cut they tell her how dry and horrible her hair is. Luckily I think her hair looks lovely and doesn’t look dry to look at it. Did your stylist recommend something?
I only schedule posts if I feel like writing more than one at a time, which rarely happens.

    • kilax says:

I was asking if you would accept the ride – it and sounds like you have done that 🙂

My stylist recommened a product. It looked similar to something I usually use but have been out of for awhile. And she was nice about the whole thing. It was just kind of funny 🙂

  5. Tracy says:

My freshman year in college, I took the train up to Boston to meet a friend at the airport. When I got there, the airport was closed due to a massive snowstorm. I was trying to call my friend from a payphone (pre cell-phones!), and I heard the guy at the phone next to me say, “I don’t know how I’m going to get back to Providence with this weather.” I promptly, without thinking, asked him for a ride. I then spent two hours alone with him in his car in the crazy snowstorm. I wasn’t scared then, I wasn’t scared when he stopped at his house before bringing me back to my dorm, I wasn’t scared during any of it – until I got back to my dorm and my friends all told me that I’d just done something stupid and I realized, yeah, I did!

All’s well that ends well. Caution is good, but there are fewer serial killers out there than the media would have us believe.

    • kilax says:

I like your story. It’s kind of sad that we are trained to never trust anyone, any more… The funny thing is, I met up with bloggers that I barely know all the time… why is that okay? 🙂

  6. Christina says:

“Sare our nations language”? Maybe that person should learn proper English grammar themselves before telling others what to do. 🙂

  7. Amy says:

You and Steven earned some good karma! Yes, I probably would have offered the guy a ride, if I had my husband with me, like you did. Maybe not if I was alone…
Haven’t seen True Blood, but I am obsessed with In Treatment – have you seen that one?

  8. I would be torn about whether to give the man a ride or not. I would most likely not because of safety worries but then I would definitely feel bad and think about it for the next few days. I’m so glad you guys did though!

My hair is really dry all the time too and I don’t really do much that should be drying it out either. When I used to swim I blamed it on the chlorine but I don’t swim anymore and it’s still dry. Maybe that’s just how it is. I got this overnight repair stuff that seems to be working a little. Did she say what you should do about it? I hate when my hair girl says something about my hair and then doesn’t tell me what to do. I am not girly! I have no idea if she doesn’t tell me!

    • kilax says:

She recommened a leave-in product that I am sure would have worked, but I am just like “meh, whatever…” about my hair. I am totally not girly at all either. I told the girl that. I said “My mom never taught me what to do with my hair!” And she responded with “Why do you think I became a stylist?!” Ha ha. She was funny.

  9. sizzle says:

I find it telling that so many passive aggressive notes are misspelled.

I don’t know if I would have given a ride to the guy. If I was alone, no. It’s nice you did!

  10. Erin says:

Hmmm, I probably wouldn’t have given a ride to a stranger. And I KNOW Jason wouldn’t have. But I am letting a stranger stay with us during the annual archivist conference next month. I put my name on a board of “crash spaces” for people attending the conference. That’s probably crazier than giving someone a ride!

I wonder if so much sweat and being outside so much when running is drying out your hair? Do you shampoo it every day? I only shampoo mine every other day but put conditioner in it every day. Or at least every day that I shower.

    • kilax says:

Ooo! That will be fun to have someone stay with you! Maybe you will make a new friend! 🙂

I wondered about the sweat too. I use a 2-in-1 every day. I think I may need to cut back on that.

  11. Kristina says:

I can’t decide if I would or wouldn’t have given him a ride. Probably more likely if I was with another person; not so likely if I were on my own.
As for the note – I actually LOVE the fact that the person didn’t even use correct grammar to write it (should be ‘nation’s’ with the possessive apostrophe). How is that for irony? But I can’t say that I share the sentiment. I think that it would make me quite sad and angry to find it.

    • kilax says:

I think I found it more funny than sad, because the grammar was so bad. Maybe I should not have shared it here 🙁

  12. Wow, that was super nice of you to give that guy a ride! I am way too wary/suspicious and I most likely wouldn’t have, which makes me feel bad.

I have the Sookie Stackhouse book series sitting at my house, waiting to be read. I guess I should get on that!

  13. Britt says:

What is with that note??? That is random!

    Hope you are feeling better.

  14. martymankins says:

The question of if someone is legit or not is hard to tell. Going with some type of gut instinct or getting a good vibe from someone may be one way of knowing it’s ok to give a stranger a ride. Sounds like this was kind of returning good karma back (from your Paris trip).

I’ve noticed that most antibiotics require lots of water and no sun exposure.

  15. Etta says:

I don’t think I would have offered him a ride, especially living in such a large metropolitan area. In my hometown I would pull over and offer rides to people walking, but it was tiny and I always knew them.

  16. ChezJulie says:

I’ve given rides to women a couple of times, but I would be pretty leery of giving a man a ride. The True Blood series is cute but gets pretty silly.

  17. Adam says:

Kuddos to the good karma you earned by giving that guy a ride. Well worth it I”m sure.

So, since you’ve posted this a week ago, I’m already too late – but those antibodics also make birth control not work. I was on face antiboodics for years and I wouldn’t even let my wife handle them. 🙂
