Random Thoughts Thursday XXXII

  • For Christmas I told Steven I would like (as a gift from him) for my car to get detailed. He thought this was not a great gift idea. I was like, “Come on, this is the type of thing husbands get for their wife in a sitcom, then get in trouble for it… and I’m ASKING you for it!” Ha ha. He saw my point and got me a gift card and we were able to have the detail (and paint buff) done this Sunday. My car is so fresh and so clean clean! I’m so happy with how it turned out! Have you ever had your car detailed?

  • At the club “A Half with Heart” on Saturday, Riyanti immediately asked if I was okay when she saw me, because I wasn’t my normal “bubbly” self (I have to confirm she said “bubbly,” lol). Damn! She was spot on with assessing me. I was still struggling with my cold, had a raspy voice and was DRAINED. It’s nice to have friends notice how you’re feeling. I can always count on Riyanti, and Bobbi for that! So cool that some of my blogging buddies are in the club*. Who are your friends that notice (and note!) your character changes immediatelyI am lucky to have quite a few who know me well enough to know right away if something is “off.”

  • Have you noticed how some blogs just get a lot of “WTG!” and “Your xyz food looks great!” comments, and not many comments with substance? I have always tried to write the types of posts** that encourage dialogue  and I want to leave comments that have something to them. But I notice that a lot of the comments I leave are “I’m happy you got to xyz…,” “I’m happy met your goal,” “i’m happy blah blah blah…” It kind of feels like the same thing as “WTG!” to me. Makes me feel kind of lame. I mean what I say, but, yeah. Lame.
  • I got a few sweet Valentine’s Day cards, and gifts from my parents and snister! And since I am so cool, I posted a picture of the gifts on Facebook… then realized that my sister made the schweet chalkboard frame for other people too and I ruined the surprise. Valentine’s Day Fail! Sorry, snis! Anyone else make any other Facebook blunders lately? If you follow me on there, or are friends with me, you probably see I get a bit overzealous with the posting.

*Well, one was blogger first, then club member, one was club member, then blogger!!!
**Except my training posts, where there is really not much to say. Those are more for me, and I appreciate ANY comment on them.

I really like the chalkboard idea your sis did.

  2. Kim says:

Your car looks great! I’ve never gotten a car detailed but both of ours could really use it!

  3. Xaarlin says:

I’m so happy you have such wonderful friends who can tell when you’re “off.” And WTg with getting your car cleaned- it looks super awesome. Hehe (my attempt at a rainbow pooping pony comment)

Practical gifts are awesome! The car detailing is something you wanted and needed- I can’t think of a better gift that that! (Of course as opposed to something kitschy that you’ll put on a shelf and never look at again)

No FB blunders here since I usually don’t post much.

    Yay happy valentines day!

  4. Marlene says:

    WTG! (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist) 😉

  5. Kandi says:

I would love to get my car detailed! Dogs in the car = total, furry mess!
I definitely leave the longest, most conversational comments on your blog posts so I guess your tactics work. I also find myself feeling lame for my comments on other blogs and it also keeps me from commenting sometimes.
I like the chalkboard frame your sister made! Is that a Pinterest find? (aside: when is your sister’s wedding?!)

    • kilax says:

Yay! Happy to hear my evil plans worked!!! Hee hee.

I wonder if it is Pinterest! I will ask her! My sis is super creative and always tackling fun projects! I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for her wedding! They are thinking June 2014 🙂

      • Christina says:

It wasn’t on Pinterest! I just saw the frames at Michaels for super cheap-o, and already had chalkboard paint in my basket, so I thought it’d be a cute idea to put them together! 🙂

  6. I find that if I don’t have something thoughtful to say, I don’t comment. And by thoughtful, I mean engaging or relevant.

For the first 2.5 years I had my blog, I had a lot of readers. Now, I don’t have so many. It seemed people thought because I stopped blogging, I stopped existing.

This bothered me at first (I wrote a post about it) but now i realize it doesn’t matter. My faithful readers are the ones I kept in touch with outside of blogging, understood my need to take a break and are still there. That is what is important.

Does this even make sense? Now, I don’t feel relevant, haha!

    Also, I love a practical gift 🙂

    • kilax says:

Of course that makes sense! And I bet as you keep blogging, you will continue to have those friends who keep in touch, and meet some new ones 🙂

  7. Rachel says:

I’ve been wanting to get my car detailed for a while! I just paid it off, so I think it deserves a little TLC. 🙂

    Happy Valentine’s Day, Kim!

  8. kelsey says:

    Happy Valentine’s day my love!!

I agree about those comments with no substance. like LOVE YOUR FOOOD! NOM NOM!

    I WANT SUBSTANCE PEOPLE!

  9. Amy says:

The only time my car ever got detailed was after we got rear ended one time and the garage that fixed the bumper ended up cleaning the car inside and out so thouroughly that I was almost happy for the accident. I think it’s a cool idea for a gift.

  10. bobbi says:

Funny story: many years back, John decided that FOR MY BIRTHDAY he would get my mom van detailed. I was effing furious. REALLY?!? THAT is my “present”???

But now I’d be happy to have it as a gift. I guess I’ve gotten more practical in my old age.

  11. gina says:

I only try to leave a comment when I think I have something to say.

The car looks amazing! Does it still look like that? I love the chalk board frame. Must remember to pin something like that for a gift ideas in the future. Christina did a really job!

    • kilax says:

It does still look like that! It smells really clean too, and all the surfaces are slick 🙂

Christina did do a great job! I wonder if she took a pic of all of them that she made 🙂

      • gina says:

Ok, go back and enter the word “good” in all the places where that comment makes no sense. Oopsy.

*…I have something GOOD to say
        *…a really GOOD job.

        Well, that was weird.

      • Christina says:

I didn’t. 🙁 Fail. I actually put them together (after they had dried) and mailed them before work, so I was in a super hurry. I just took a couple photos. FAIL

  12. Heather says:

Especially on a blog that’s really popular it can be hard to leave substantive comments because it feels like everyone’s said it before, so sometimes all that’s left is “Wow congratulations on being able to (PR, finish the marathon, etc)!”

I have to admit, I don’t even know what detailing a car involves, so obviously, mine has never had the pleasure!

    • Heather says:

And also, I don’t know why, but Chrome always times out when I comment here, but the comment still posts. It doesn’t do that for any other blog, and Firefox doesn’t do it. -confused-

      • kilax says:

I am sorry! I didn’t realize I had a Chrome issue. I will see what I can find!

Very true on the big blogs with comments. That is where I see the most of those types of comments.

  13. gingerfoxxx says:

I would be THRILLED if someone detailed my car. Seriously, i would cry tears of joy.

  14. Sometimes I feel like I’m leaving those types of comments “Great job on….” “So happy to hear…” and I mean what I say but like you, I definitely feel lame. Although, as much as I love getting comments with substance, I also appreciate any comment and the fact that people took time to leave one makes me happy.

I’ve definitely never had my car detailed but when I had my car in Chicago I didn’t take the best care of it (which is why it’s now sitting in my mom’s garage haha). In my defense, my old car was evil and only broke down/acted funny when I was driving it.

    • kilax says:

Very very true. I appreciate all the comments I get too. Yikes! I hope no one feels they can’t say anything like that here now! Oops! Foot in mouth.

  15. Beth says:

I think everyone is guilty of a lame comment or two on a blog, but sometimes you just want to let someone know that you read their post but you don’t exactly have anything poignant to say. I do have some friends who know me well enough to know when I’m down or upset, but I think they also know me well enough that I generally like to work through things on my own, especially when I’m feeling emotional (no need for outbursts when I’m in the heat of the moment–I like to cool off a bit), so they don’t necessarily comment on it.

  16. Erin says:

There needs to be some sort of phrase people can use that says “I read your post, liked it, but don’t have anything to add” that we can use without sounding lame.

The vacuum cleaner mark design in your car’s carpeting is hilarious! I love it! Our car probably needs to be detailed. There’s probably still dog fur in the carpets and you know how long it’s been since we had dogs! Jason loves to clean the outside but not the inside.

Your sis is very sweet to send people Valentine’s Day gifts!

  17. Allie says:

Ooooh man, I would LOVE a car detailing! Mine’s full of bits of straw that I just can’t get around to vacuuming all out. Speaking of which, I was given a hard time for asking for a vacuum cleaner for Christmas–similar issue! Convinced the fam to actually get me one despite complaints about that not being a “real gift,” and holy cow, I love that thing.

    • kilax says:

LOL! One year I wanted this really specific laundry basket and my brother (who drew my name for gift giving) was like “really? this is REALLY what you want?!”

  18. J says:

I try to post things with substance too! I want it to be slightly informative/viewing into my way of life/thought provoking with my posts. ITs good to have fun random posts in there too. I like a good mix!

  19. That is such a super sweet thing your sister did!
Hope you’re back to your full strength health wise sooon..I feel lucky to have a few super close friends that notice that kinda thing too. It’s special, and hard to find!

    • kilax says:

Thanks! I am feeling a lot better! It is my husband that is sick now. Oops 😉 And that is awesome you have friends like that too! Your ones in Canada or your friends in England? 🙂

  20. Maggie says:

So car detailing … that’s just a thorough cleaning, right? Years ago, Robert worked at an auto auction place, and I think he was able to get car detailing done for pretty cheap, and they would do it while he was at work. I think he took my car in for it at least once. Otherwise I am way too cheap to pay for that. I am also too lazy to vacuum my own car.

I get what you are saying about comments. I always try to leave something more than just “thats great, congrats” or whatever. But then I wonder, is it better to leave a generic comment, or no comment at all?

  21. I’ve never had my car detailed before. My dad has always been super anal about keeping the cars clean, so I kind of got that from him. Except with my old car. I just stopped caring about that thing. We probably shouldn’t talk about how long it took me to make it look half presentable when I took it to the dealership as a trade in.

  22. Anne says:

Do you ever think you commented on a blog, then realize that you never did? Because I read this when I got up this morning (like 3 hours after you posted this – DAMN!), and definitely meant to comment. Then I had to just search for my name to make sure I didn’t do it already.

    Anyway.

When it comes to my blog, I’m so happy ANYONE is reading it, much less commenting on it, so I’m always happy to read whatever anyone has to say! But it is hard to get any sort of dialogue going that way. The WTG comments bug me more on sites like Myfitnesspal, where I see those in response to someone logging their food for the day. I mean I get that your goal there is to log your food, so it’s good that you did, but dude, I just logged that I burned a million calories in my class today, and nothing? Um, but I also only have 4 friends on that site, so that could be why.

I always think I should get our car detailed, or throw away all the post-run granola bar wrappers I’ve stuffed in the door, or have it washed at some point in time but… I just don’t do it. It’s not even because it’s not my car, because I cared even less about my own! Ever since I moved to Chicago and the city totally destroyed my car (seriously, it didn’t have a scratch on it, and within a week it had been keyed, dinged and shortly thereafter lost a mirror), I guess I see it as being functional more than anything else.

    • Anne says:

Whoa that was a LOOOOOOONG comment!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha. I would love it if you commented on my posts MORE than once. 🙂 Then maybe I would think we were close to being friends? Friendly acquaintances? Am I pushing it?

Very interesting about Myfitnesspal and the food comments – I didn’t even know that you could leave comments there (I had the app, once) and that is weird that they are all “go food” but not “go, workout!”

Oh gosh. That is a reason I would have to be car-less if I lived in the city. I am anal about door dings and park obnoxiously far away from places.

      • Anne says:

HA! Is that why you always park so far from El Famous? I want to be as close to it as possible, even though I have yet to step inside. Someday…

I should comment more, because that’s the only interaction we ever have. 🙂

If I ever leave a comment about someone’s food on MFP, it’s either to say what good ideas they had, or to make fun of my one friend for counting things like wine or ice cream as dinner. So that’s how useful of an app it is for me. I log my food by hand and track my exercises in like 4 other places, so I’m not sure why I still use it.

  23. ChezJulie says:

I think you always get good comments on your blog. It is like a community. Often it is as much fun to read the other people’s thoughts and anecdotes as the original post.

I don’t mind WTG comments from you because I know you’re sincere.

And I LOVE Christina’s chalkboard heart frames. Those are wonderful. Too bad I am too lazy to make something like that myself.

    • kilax says:

Aww, thanks! That comment really makes my day! And I am sincere with the WTGs! 🙂

LOL! Maybe they were not too much work? Hmm 🙂

Years ago (1987), I used to get my car detailed often (6 times a year). It was my first ever new car and I wanted to keep it nice for as long as I could afford to.

I rarely get my car detailed, even now that I have another new car (25 years later). But I’m sure once winter passes and summer approaches, I will be better about keeping it cleaner (I wash it twice a week in the winter time to get the salt and gunk off of it).
