Random Thoughts Thursday 45

  • Guys! Thank you for putting up with my crap writing lately. I know it’s not my best. Writing here is very habitual for me… and also compulsive. I want to write most days, and I enjoy it. But I know my posts have been disjointed. I keep publishing them, because I have a tendency to disappear in the summer if I stop writing for a few days. Do you notice blogging trends in the summer? It sometimes seems like there are less posts in the summer – people are spending more time outside, maybe?
  • My dad has been following this plan to get ready for our 5K on the 27th. I think he is already at the end of week two? Gah! I am so proud of him. All it took was a little whiny “this would be a great birthday present for me” text (to which his response was, “What? My death?” Sigh. No. “An actual blood family member doing a race with me.”) I sent my dad a box of running clothes. I asked him to model them in pics for the blog. Still waiting on those pics, Dad!
  • I think it’s ironic that I feel guilty for taking the time to exercise when my ACE exam is two weeks from today… because a personal trainer would help a client figure out how to fit exercise in during busy times! I think I mostly feel bad because I have said no to so much social stuff, including my aunt’s retirement party in Iowa, Mötley Crüe tickets (also in Iowa), stand up paddle boarding (in Chicago), a Spartan race (in some Illinois town in the middle of nowhere)… ugh. I have to stay close to home to get my workouts in, then get back to STUDYING!
  • Mica made me this beautiful infinity scarf in my favorite color! I love it! What a thoughtful gift! (Okay, I may or may have not rudely asked her to make me one…)

A few interesting articles from the past week

  • After reading this article (pdf here), I think I found how I need to align my skillset – use my office architectural skills to design office space for fitness companies.
  • ESPN Body Issue – holy cow, I was super inspired by these beautiful athlete’s bodies
  • Facebook Infographic on Active Cities – wow! Facebook is compiling interesting information! Facebook ranked the top 10 fittest cities based on three months of fitness related check-in activity. I was REALLY surprised by the cities on this list.
  • The ACE manual says the best way to get used to the heat is to acclimate to it and drink a lot of water (when working out). This article (pdf here) says the same thing, including that it takes healthy people 10-14 days to acclimate. How long to you think it takes you to acclimate to hot weather?
  • I thought this article (pdf here) about CPR stats was interesting. Basically – the survival rate is not as high as you’d think, based on what you see in movies and on TV. I definitely thought about that when I took CPR training.

How exciting that your dad is going to run with you! I would love for my parents to do a 5k. It sucks that you’ve had to say no to so many fun activities, but only a few weeks and you can start saying YES to everything! I think it took me 2 weeks to get acclimated to the heat. I’m carrying water on anything over 5 & I have to stop at drinking fountains every two miles or so…but I’m a super sweater, gross but true. I agree that blogger habits change in the summer, at least for me. I’ve been posting less & commenting less….lets pretend it’s from summer, not me being lazy. 🙂

    • kilax says:

How is your personal trainer studying going? You decided to go with ACE as well, correct?

I carry my water for 3 milers in the summer! It’s so crazy! I took my backpack for a 10 miler on Monday and drank all 2L!

      • Jess says:

        Uhhh…..it’s going. 🙂
I’m taking the nasm exam. I’ve been getting through a chapter every 3 days or so. Marathon training & studying probably wasn’t the best idea, but I’ll survive one or the other!

  2. RunningLaur says:

It’s such a bummer to say no to things, but only for a bit longer!
The 3 month time span for the fitness ‘study’ bothers me. It’s self reported (only to facebook) data and cities across the country vary so much based on what 3 months it is! People in Pittsburgh workout much more in the 3 months before the Pittsburgh marathon, and people in Phoenix do almost nothing in the summer. Ha!
I used to really believe the 10-14 day time window to acclimated when I was based in Phoenix. This summer it seems that I’ve been in the heat and humidity for 2 months and am not acclimated at all! But, fall will be awesome!
(Random Lauren Thoughts Thursday 🙂 )

    • kilax says:

Exactly! It’s not really usable data. But! Is anything in these studies? Ha ha ha.

I wonder how frequently you have to go outside to acclimate in the 10-14 days. Also, I wonder if it takes longer in climates where there are such huge temp/humidity swings!

  3. kelsey says:

Love the scarf! I just bought a dress in that color yesterday.. I used to hate orange but I’m loving it lately!

Thanks for the links to the interesting articles!

  4. Valerie says:

Good for your Dad! (And tell him those photos are totally necessary for your blog HAHA!) And that scarf is beautiful!! Mica is a knitting whiz! (And I’m not surprised that it’s orange hehehe)

  5. I want the scarf. Mmkay. Thanks.

Two weeks and it will be over. You will have passed, mailed all your stuff to me and celebrating with vegan peanut butter pie and bagels. Don’t worry about the opportunities you’ve said no to but think about the ones you are creating.

Wow. That sounded almost smart. Must get back to reading dumb lunge form.

I hated that FB survey. I wonder if I posted a million times about my tabata abs if Fort Wayne would somehow be a magic city. Or not.

    • kilax says:

LOL! I was thinking about sharing my homemade flashcards with you, but everyone tells me they can’t read my handwriting!

      YES! YOU SO INSPIRATIONAL!

      But really, true dat.

I have mostly decided I am going to wing it with chapters 7-9 (or was it 7-10?). I just can’t memorize all that.

The FB study is funny, because I rarely post my workouts to my personal page. So basically it shows who in each city wants credit for posting their workouts.

  6. Melissa says:

    LOVE the scarf!

  7. Declan says:

Blogging trends, everyone is out having more fun then me! Instagram approved! lol

I think it takes me a few weeks to get my summer legs and at least be at 80% speed in the heat and humidity!
ESPN called me to be in the Body issue, but I turned it down since I like living under the radar.

  8. martymankins says:

Acclimated to the hot weather? very quickly. I thrive on warmer weather.

As for blogging less during the summer months, I am guilty as charged. It’s nice to see others like you that don’t really slow down their blogging. I think if I could figure out how to best enjoy the outdoors and write more often on my iPhone/iPad, I might be able to blog more often.

    • kilax says:

Aww, thanks Marty. I am happy you like that I still post some in the summer.

If only we could figure out a way for our brains to write drafts that we could upload to our computers! Ha! I think out a lot of posts when I am running then have to try to remember them when I get back.

      How are your workouts going?

      • martymankins says:

My workouts are going ok. Thanks to an increase of other things going on in my life, my gym visits have been reduced. But I’m at the same weight and still have a good amount of my stamina. I think once things calm down in the next 8 weeks here, I will have worked back into my 3-4 days of 1.5 hr workouts again.

  9. Michael says:

My husband and I were having the “acclimation” discussion the other day. I told him I honestly don’t think I ever acclimate. Maybe I do but I feel just as miserable at the end of the summer as I did at the beginning on a long hot run…Meh!

Love the scarf…very pretty. Is it bright orange? Sometimes color over computer screens isn’t quite right. I love orange!

Would love to see the pics of your Dad modeling running clothes lol. That’s cool he’s planning to do the 5K though, very cool!

    • kilax says:

I wonder if that is a MO thing! I am not sure I could get used to how hot and humid you guys have it down there! 😉

It is bright orange! I am obsessed with all things orange 🙂

I am going to keep bugging him for pics!

  10. That scarf is gorgeous! Some people get all the talent …

  11. Erin says:

People definitely take time off during the summer. I think they start to feel a little burnt out, too. Because when you live somewhere where you only get a few months of ALL THE THINGS happening all at once you want to be out there doing them.

I’m happy your dad agreed to do the 5K with you! But will there be hilarious post-race gasping pics like we got the time your brother ran with you? 🙂

And, yes, you’ve had to say no to things but hopefully that’s just a small part of your life. There will be other things to do in the future!

    • dad says:

There may be hilarious mid-race gasping pics!

    • kilax says:

Yes! ALL THE THINGS!!!!!!!!! ALL AT ONCE!!!!!! 😉

Hmm. Maybe! I am not sure who will be there to take photos! Should I run ahead of him to take them? 😛

There will be other things to do in the future! I just hope I still get the invites later on, despite all the “no saying” now 😉

  12. Bean says:

Love the scarf! That is a great and happy color. Oh man those people in the ESPN body issue- amazing. Shows me I have some work to do:). Yeah for your dad! That is awesome.

  13. I saw that FB list, and was sad that my beloved Minneapolis wasn’t on the list like I had expected, I was happy that Tacoma was, since apparently I’m settling here and am on a mission to learn to like it. I guess I should be happy that Tacoma is apparently full of fitness-lovers like me! 🙂

  14. Anne says:

That’s so cool that your dad is training to run with you! That’s totally not an option for my parents, but I wonder if I could get one of my in-laws to do one. Hmmm….

I agree that it’s good that FB is doing something somewhat useful with all of our data, and obviously that’s the only way they can measure how active a city is but that can’t be very accurate. I never post about my workouts, which is obvi why Chicago didn’t make the top of the list.

  15. Kristina says:

I think you’ve had some great, thought-provoking posts lately! I wish I were as dedicated!
Someone else posted Facebook’s “fittest cities” and I call BS on the list. I don’t care that where I live isn’t on the list, but I don’t believe for a second that San Antonio, TX is “fitter” than Boulder or San Diego.

  16. Mica says:

Wait, what? VA Beach?? Really? I just told Harrison, and he was also surprised. I’ve always said I don’t want to live in Colorado because I’m afraid of everyone being way fitter than I am. Instead of being motivated, I think I’d just feel bad about myself and eat doughnuts. (“I”ll bring down the average fitness, nom nom doughnuts!”)

This infographic is so skewed though because it’s only people who use Facebook, which cuts out an entire demographic.

I’m glad you like the scarf!! I love wearing mine on cold days. It’s actually a lot easier to make than it looks, but I’m amused people think I’m such a knitting whiz!

    • kilax says:

I want to move to Colorado because I would hope those people would motivate me to be more fit! Ha ha ha. I would probably just being eating doughnuts with you though 🙂

  17. Maggie says:

That Facebook article is interesting to me, only because it proves my thought that I’ve held for years that Facebook has the potential to be a huge database of demographic information and could replace previously popular databases. But in my train of thought, it would be used for marketing purposes and to create better targeted marketing. Which Facebook is doing, and I assume will only evolve and get even more creepy.

    • kilax says:

I bet they are doing both things, simultaneously – being creepsters and getting LOTS of information from us so they can market to us.

And I think Facebook wants to be the internet. Which, yeah. No.
